Remember when Iroh, a man born into the money of the firstborn son of the fucking Firelord, humbled himself repeatedly just to get a job doing what he loved? When he started on his journey with Zuko they were still living in relative comfort. Hell they had everything except the right to return home. Zuko's room, despite being solid iron, was still comfortable and homey. When Iroh and Zuko were betrayed by Azula and as a result abandoned their previous allegiances Iroh never once complained about being homeless. Months went on and he was fine humbling himself for pocket change. It was Zuko that bitched and moaned, and the original show was perfectly happy to point this out as a character flaw through Iroh's wise words. Then when Iroh was given a chance to help in a tea shop he fucking leapt at it. Remember that this man was once promised the throne. Ozai only stole the throne from his brother by convincing his father Iroh's losses made him too weak to keep their empire strong. Iroh, a man that once had literal servants doing everything for him, humbled himself and worked his aging ass off to have a life. Meanwhile. the earth lion turtle and the elemental turtles were the holders of the elements the turtles are not benders they were not the ones who taught humans how to manipulate the elements they did not show humans how to BEND they only gave them the power by transferring that energy to them through energybending. Oma and Shu were the first earthbenders not the first humans to receive the element of earth but the first to actually bend the element they were the first to manipulate it as a skill because they learned to manipulate earth from watching the badgermoles they learned how to BEND that element to their will. (BENDING) In WANs Era you never heard any of them say bending when describing the elements because it was not an established art back then that’s why they set it up that way. they were not BENDING it’s not bending until you have mastery of that element just tossing it around and not knowing how to properly use it is not bending it is not manipulating it to your will it Avatar showed you humans learned to bend from watching the animals it didn’t show you that the 4 animals gave them the power of the elements it never showed that at all it never showed you how they were introduced to the elements in the first place it only showed you how they gained mastery of it and created the art of bending which came from the movement of animals like real world martial arts The animals are the source of bending not the ones who gave humans the elements even toph explained that in her story to zuko (the firebending masters)she ran away and hid in the cave she ended up living with the badgermoles who taught her how to manipulate earth by watching their movements they didn’t give her the power of earth but she learned to manipulate it moving as the blind creatures did in their daily lives that’s how she became able to manipulate earth and become so great at (EARTH BENDING) which is how she became a master at (BENDING) which is the masterful manipulation of the elements In the same episode with the sun warriors you see the dragon dance which is a form of firebending the sun warriors created from watching the movement of the dragons thats where bending the manipulation of the elements come from.from watching the animals move In book 1 YUE says our ancestors learned to (WATER BEND)by watching the ocean and the moon push and pull the tides it was through the MOVEMENTS of nature that the humans learned and created the art of (BENDING)not the lion turtles

@studio2898 Жыл бұрын
@LloydvShizuki the title was not talking about bending because it didn’t exist back then it wasn’t even an established term. He’s talking about energy which they did already have the thing is it wasn’t televised so the audience has no idea of what that looks like we only know how it works when the avatar does it it’s not hard to understand this stuff
@studio2898 Жыл бұрын
@LloydvShizuki The 3 animals and the moon guided humans to developing bending/martial art to defend and grow they did this by watching how nature reacts to its surroundings like the real world styles if they never did that they’d just be unskilled elemental holders. Humans could not use their chi to manipulate nature because it’s not a normal thing and nature is a force of its on. The lion turtles introduced humans to the elements and when they no longer protected humans they likely fought over territory settled in those regions passed on the elements through DNA b cause it’s energy they eventually learned from watching the animals and created the four nations

As a homeless guy, I agree with E;R about Wan and his friends. Yes, it's hard to get a job due to public perception of the poor and homeless, but that doesn't mean you stop trying. There's bound to be SOME way to make money and support yourself without stealing from others. As many people have pointed out, Wan actually did get a job but decided to use the tool given for the job, (firebending,) to rob the authorities. It'd be one thing if we saw him try and fail, (that would show he wasn't just some freeloader who doesn't want to work,) but no, we only see him and his friends making no effort to improve their lives themselves and instead make other people pay for their carefree lifestyle. Honestly if I were Elder Chou I would've banished him too.

They totally killed the meaning of bending in this show First, korra bending 3 elements when she was 4 and making everyone's bending look like they are boxing totally killed the whole meaning of bending being about discipline, martial arts and spirituality. All you gotta do is punch air to firebend korra! Unlike aang who had to travel and learn every styles of the elements, who had to learn from katara, who had to find toph and be tough, who had to learn the true meaning of fire, who had to meet a guru to master his avatar state. They killed the meaning of the avatar too, The avatar was supposed to keep balance not only the 'good things' the avatar state was thousands of lives all together, thousand years of bending knowledge. IT WAS NOT SOME SPIRIT POSSESSING A HUMAN. The whole avatar thing was " %100 human but still can be the bridge between the 2 worlds, will live with, and feel like all 4 nations" it was a person being the connection between everything and anything. The four nations, nonbenders, the spirit world. Avatar was the one to hold it together. One of the 100 year war's reasons was the lack of an avatar, the lack of the connection. This show, just killed that.
@angel76618 жыл бұрын
I think the creators were thinking that just because boxing is a martial art it can be incorporated into bending not realizing that martial arts also came with its own philosophy and focused on styles and certian aspect in fighting something boxing I don't think touches upon boxing focus on the physical aspect , I had thought that maybe the avatar was spirit who became human or a human who reached enlightenment but stood behind to guide humanity

Korra was raised properly as an avatar, being taken at a young age by the white lotus and trained by masters. Of course she didn't have to travel the world to learn all this shit, things were functioning correctly when she was born. Besides, did you really want to watch yet another avatar learn the same shit that the last one did? Been there, done that, skip to the fresh bits. As to your second point, nothing was really changed there. They explained the origins of the avatar, but they didn't retcon what had already been established.
@ShinobiPXO7 жыл бұрын
Um, no they did not. The whole point of bending is it's based on marital arts. Martial arts change over time, so using things like boxing isn't a big deal. And you are clearly over shooting things there. Aang learned bending in a couple of months and the writers never had the intentions of showing Korra learn the elements aside from air, otherwise it's just a cope and paste of Last Airbender How did they killed the meaning of the Avatar? A Spirit possessing a human is the literal definition of an Avatar. That's what the word means. Thousands of years of bending knowledge doesn't make a good Avatar. Otherwise how is the first one an Avatar? And yes, the show still has the Avatar being the connection to everything. How was this killed? Or are you just stupid?

I’m sorry, I just have to ask; How do you Airbend by punching? I don’t think Aang ever “punched” air. At most he thrusted his wrist out, _maybe,_ but he was never so aggressive with it, you know? Yeah he’s used it when he was angry before, so it’s not like Korra is the only one, but Korra is all about that aggressive, non-spiritual lifestyle, and her way of Airbending looked she was basically using fire bending and water bending aspects to bend air, which made no sense.

Aang approached every bending style like it was Airbending, at least in the beginning. He struggled with earth for an entire training episode because he wasn't stubborn enough, in the words of Toph. As with fire, when he was playing with it when he first created flame. He controlled it like it was air, and this wasn't careful getting Katara burnt. I'm not going to watch the Korra series to find out if she changes or not.

The fun bit about the learning of the bending arts, particularly with Earth Bending in the original series, while Badger-Moles were the original Earth Benders, the style humans used was rougher, less refined. This is exhibited most clearly by Toph herself who's Earth Bending style is indeed different. Not only because not only is she blind like the Badger-Moles, but as she learned directly from them, the martial art movements she exhibits is slightly different. Every other Earth Bender uses motions similar to Hung Gar, a form of Kung Fu. This style is noted for it's heavy rotated stances and hard kicks and punches. It's a very stiff, and deliberate form. But Toph, having studied from the original masters, her style is more similar to Chu Gar, which is based far more in precise footwork as well as more focus on the movements of the opponent to guide your own. This made her the most powerful Earth Bender there ever was because she "waited and listened" as it were. As impulsive as Toph could be, she relied on waiting on others to dictate her actions even in combat. It's truly the brilliance of her character because she so wanted to be independent but because she was blind, even with her super sense, it was through the actions of others that she was able to direct herself.
@stegomasaurus67378 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree that the reason for Korra learning Raava's backstory is contrived as all hell. It breaks the pace of the story completely and used the most clichéd tropes possible to justify it. Even though the rest of the story's a mess, one big edit could have justified the inclusion of Wan's story into it: removing the portals to the spirit world that anyone can waltz into. I mean, book 2 is called "Spirits", right? And the big threat of the season is also spirits. That puts Korra, who is about as non-spiritual as you can get, at a huge disadvantage. If Unalaq was able to enter the spirit world just because he was able to meditate long enough and hard enough to become spiritually attuned, and he orchestrated his plans there, Korra or anyone else would be pretty much helpless to stop him (if he protected/hid his physical body well enough). This would make it necessary for Korra to discipline her mind for it even to be possible for her to know how to handle the spirits and stop Unalaq. Pretty good framework for a conflict. A very natural step towards Korra's spiritual enlightenment would be learning the Avatar origin story, thus allowing her to find a literal spirit within herself. Instead of having Korra do pretty much nothing but watch a movie in a pool of water, she could and should be able to learn the story only when she's truly able to clear her mind and overcome her flaws. Maybe the story could be revealed piece by piece, having it get cut off in Korra's head a few times throughout the season because she's not yet attuned enough to see it all. This could also be used to contribute to the build-up to the climax, as the nature of the Avatar and Vaatu end up being important to the main story, and revealing this information fragmentally could add intrigue and mystery. Then, near the end, Korra would have developed enough to complete the backstory and subsequently be able to enter the spirit world. Korra would then use the ability to enter the spirit world, along with the lessons she learned to gain that ability, to defeat the villains, save the world, etc. I know Aang never needed to know there was a glowing kite in his chest to enter the spirit world, but Aang's spirituality was never flawed enough to require an entire character arc focused on it either. Even if you think Wan's story sucked, you'd be able to say "but at least it got Korra to grow up and stop being a cunt" if it were executed this way.

+TheKaisama-Yeah, I miss the days when protagonists actually had to be likable. Even in shows like Dexter or The Sopranos, there still had to be at least something about the main character that was likable-Tony loved his family and would do anything for them, Dexter has a skewed ideology where he takes the scum off the streets, etc. And in the right hands, Korra could've been such a fascinating and fun character-someone who is a little brash and hotheaded but still holds a ton of natural charisma (something Korra actually lacks more than a bit off) and still caring about doing the right thing and being a good hero that people need. It was because of that where while I don't consider the episodes canon (or anything of Legend of Korra, really), I actually liked Wan. To me, he was almost everything Korra should've been but wasn't: he was reckless, he was a bit brash and hotheaded. But, he also had a tremendous heart and enormous compassion for others that in just two episodes, he was way more developed and likable than Korra was in the entire four seasons. I can see why people do view him as an asshole (the brain dead decision to split Raava and Vaatu apart which plunges the world into darkness, etc.) and in better hands, he would've been even more and far better fleshed out. At the very least Wan was able to acknowledge when he did make a mistake and wanted to fix it, something Korra doesn't do and in fact, actively pins the blame on everyone else. So unfortunately, Korra is the worst person in this situation, even if people do see Wan as an irredeemable asshole (he definitely doesn't qualify as the first Avatar, I will agree with that), he at least only appeared for two episodes. Korra is still THE WORST. The adults tend to mostly be likable: Tenzin, Kya, Bumi, Lin, Su Yin, Verrick, etc. but most everyone else is completely self absorbed, narcisstic assholes who can't be bothered to save the world unless it's convienent for them, especially Korra. She in fact gives up, cries, and is willing to let the world be swallowed by darkness when Vaatu destroys Raava and she's no longer the Avatar. What a little shit. And THIS is supposed to be the protagonist you are rooting for? Screw you, Bryke.

Just an FYI I’m not sure if I’m the only one who has picked up on this but the entire Avatar epic is basically the Second Sino-Japanese War, from 1937, just it focuses on a small set of characters. A heavily industrialized and militarized honor-centric asiatic empire begins a war against its unindustrialized asiatic neighbors, and uses cruel methods and machinery to destroy the other nations. The Water and Earth nations are probably the Communist Chinese and Democratic Chinese, while Korea would probably be the airbenders since they got wiped out by the fire nation before anything could happen. If it wasn’t already obvious, the fire nation is Japan, and the Fire Emperor is Hirohito without glasses. The fall of Basing-Se is almost perfectly parallel to the fall of Nanking.
@chairmanofrussia6 жыл бұрын
I half agree. I think it’s an interesting analysis. But it seems more likely that it’s about asiatic peoples-the airbenders are Tibetan, another oppressed group and waterbenders being native alaskan/eskimos. Of course, earth kingdom is china and fire nation is japan. Their shapes on the map make it obvious. Waterbenders are at the poles, just like eskimos too.

I will say it’s almost a small miracle that Ba Sing Sa fell the way it did. Historically a city taken by storm after a long siege was subjected to a sack. Considering what it would take to defeat Ba Sing Sa it could expect a brutal and prolonged sack. It wasn’t even a matter of tactics. After the army brought down the wall the attacking general basically had no control over his men as they took out their frustrations on the population. However because it was taken from within things were completely different. Rather than fighting house by house and street by street the fire nation troops marched all the way to the palace in good order.
@dalfifran75723 жыл бұрын
It's part of it, but not entirely. The original Avatar lore is loosely based from many aspect of Asian culture. Fire Nation from Japanase Earth Kingdom from Chinese Water Tribe from Inuit Air Nomad from Tibetian Monk. The Avatar reincarnation and it's method to determine successor is even a direct rip-off from how the Tibetian Monk determine their Dalai Lama, using the previous Dalai Lama toys. Several other characters also clearly based or named from other Asian culture. Guru Pathik is an Indian Bumi and Agni Kai is a name derived from Indonesia/Malay and Sanskrit meaning Earth and Fire. All and all, it was clearly heavily based on Asian lore, culture, and mythology.

Why don't the free-loaders have food? They're in the middle of a fucking forest. They could pick up a bow or a spear or pick fruit from trees or brush. Hell, they could hunt animals for food and fur to sell for more food. For fuck's sake, Wan got a job right away by going on the expedition, they even admitted few other people volunteer for the job so we know that workers are demanded for at least one profession. But Wan takes the opportunity to steal magic. This is why no one likes him or is willing to employ him.

When Korra first was airing, I watched the first season and felt very disenchanted. Years later I saw part of this episode and my first thought was 'wait that completely contradicts everything the original series said about bending origins wtf', but then I didn't watch anymore and assumed that there was some sort of logical explanation given that makes it make sense. Is there really honestly nothing to justify that? Wow.
@SirEschaton8 жыл бұрын
Wait, I thought when the Spirit Turtle said they'd have fire until they returned from their hunt. Which implied the magic would automatically go away. But it was actually even more lax than checking out a book from the library and they just relied on good faith for the humans to return the magic each time?

Uh, a slight rebuttal to your comment. I'm pretty sure that the fire magic would not suddenly disappear as soon as Wan touches land on the lion turtle's back, because (1) Wan's fire-bending didn't vanish when he returned to the city to raid the Chou's food supply, (2) it was stated by the Chief Huntsman that he had to return the fire magic back to the lion turtle when Wan "chickened out", and (3) his fire magic didn't dissipate and vanish over time considering he spent weeks, if not months on end using his firebending abilities out in the wild with the spirits.

1:45 - 'Ambivalent until they had their hetero lenses removed' Haha. But seriously, the creators and co-creator admitted they wanted to make Korra and Asami a thing from the get go because the show was their fanfiction. Despite Korra having a thing for Mako, they retconned it into her falling head over heels for Asami despite those relationships never ending well in real life. I can slightly get Korra being talented at some of her bending - it's in her personality and she is gifted - but the way it was written was that, at age 4, she's some kind of snarky brat that wants the world to bend her way. It'd be one thing if she was like that at 14. But 4? Yeah...no.

It's the equivalent of using the words racist or homophobe - it is well past its use. Did I say 'men are rapists'? No, I said *gay men* tend to cut corners for their fellow *gay men* who rape. You don't get to condemn lesbians while excusing yourself. It's called the LGBT - you're all *equal* now, so don't think you're immune from criticism. It seems to be a thing for gay men to pin rape and abuse stories on lesbians while ignoring their own. I hope you realize lesbians use the same canard, right? I don't recall worshiping lesbians. In fact, my original post indirectly said true lesbianism does not exist among women. I don't think a tumblrite lesbian worshipper would say that, would they?

Thank you! Lol I just had this debate yesterday! I made the statement that Season 2 was a retcon of LOK itself and ATLA. I was challenged on it but after pointing out LOK retconned one of its own characters (Lin) the Begs episodes retconned the lore of ATLA with the Lion Turtles. I have said it before and I'll say it again, Bryke has this pride issue going that they want to be seen as THE reason for ATLA success, when it was the Ehasz' and that writing staff. Yet people gas their heads up calling them "The Creators", well LOK is their baby and they need to own it. The fans need to get out their feelings on this fact and stop propping this show up as great. It's mediocre and a slap in the face of its predecessor. I also don't know how much blame Tim Hendricks gets. If you watch Legend of Voltron, he writes on that and its nothing even close to what shows up on LOK. This leads me to believe Bryke trotted other writers out there as a shield, just in case there is backlash. However, I see through that. Bryan and Mike look more and more like hacks.
@esemicolonr8 жыл бұрын
Someone after my own heart. Whorra's indeed a hefty case of "pride goeth before a fall," and it's especially evident, I think, with the Wan episodes, which I hope to delve deeper into in one of the next parts.
@trinidadonassis74118 жыл бұрын
The crazy thing is, that LOK super fans always seem to either gloss over or outright never admit, particularly when it comes to those Beginnings episodes, the main reason they liked them was that the damn protagonist wasn't in them! Everyone had Korra fatigue! WTF does that say about your show Bryke??? Most people get mad at me for pulling Bryan and Mikes cards, but go back and read those nonsensical tumblr posts. While most people fell for the red herring ending, their attention was diverted from the fact Bryke gave us a bastardized fanfic of itself. Not to mention, their pathetic attempt at trying to defend sheep shit in shallow water, they tried to throw all kinds of shade at Ehasz and co. with the "forced relationships and simplistic story arc". I lost a ton of respect for how petty they are. Just my opinion...

No original thoughts or actual transparency whatsoever. That is where you find the Aang Katara was "forced" narrative, the "more mature show" narrative, the Korra "developed" as a character narrative, the "nostalgia" narrative, LOL I could go on and on but you get what I'm saying.

Nagger I actually think there is a lot they’ve could’ve done with Republic City. You can actually come with a lot of cool ideas. i.e. What should Republic City’s role be in the world? Has republic city affected the world culturally and spiritually? Does it have too much or too little influence on the world’s affairs? What do people from the Earth Kingdom/Water Tribes/Fire Nation think of Republic City? Does a bender from Republic City fight differently from a bender from their respective elemental nation? Can Republic City be used a political weapon by people or other nations? Bryke could’ve done a commentary on the pros and and cons of a “World-unifying city,” and we do get some of that. But it’s no where near as developed as it could be. Instead we get a fucking love triangle and a non bender rebellion plot that goes to shit.

Like instead of continuing onward to the unanswered things like Zuko's mother and Aang trying to find a way to restore Airbending and his people back. The Last Airbender made us bare witness to an entire World, Legend of Korra we are stuck in this ridiculous city that feels out of place sevearly, Why this Western styled New York? Why not Shanghai, or Hong Kong, or Tokyo? That may be a petty reason to hate the show, but it aleanated me. You don't go through 4 seasons of dating and chasing boys and then decide the character is gay at the last two minutes. That is just bad story telling.
