In US news and current events today, climate change is threatening homes of people in the Great Lakes region. Rita Alton is a Lake Michigan coast resident in Manistee County struggling with the grim reality that she will need to move as the land by her house continues to erode away.
Alton used to have nearly an acre of land between her house and the shoreline - now her house sits only 8 feet from the edge. Alton says, ‘It’s virtually impossible to separate what we’re seeing from climate change.’ Hear her story, and hear from other residents in the Great Lakes region, about how the climate crisis is impacting their lives.

Why should people who take big risks that don’t pay off force the tax payer to foot the bill for their own mistake. These people knew there were significant risks whenever it comes to building or buying properties on land that borders constantly fluctuating coastline water levels? If a person wants build or buy property on land like this then no one is stopping them from going and taking out a private flood or erosion insurance policy. If they are rich enough to afford property like this, then they are rich enough to pay for the insurance that they can get to recover their loses if they end up losing the property because of things like this. Tax payers should not foot the bill for other people’s gambling losses, they took a risk, it didn’t pay off, and they didn’t get flood insurance or erosion insurance, despite the fact that they are rich enough to even afford properties like this, and despite the fact that they were well aware that the great lakes water level changes drastically all the time? This has been happening on the WI side of lake Michigan for years, im not entirely sure that you blame global warming for an issue that has gone on in some areas for 20+ yrs... property owners and municipalities have spent millions dumping rock and securing the shoreline. The only difference is how the WI and the MI sides are handling it. The WI side is far more populated along the western shore of lake Michigan, so spending millions makes sense (it will protect entire neighborhoods for going into the drink, instead of a single house) But, even in WI we continue to lose houses to erosion... Homeowners need to be more proactive and seek assistance as soon as any sign of shore erosion is detected. Not to be rude or heartless, but the woman in the video talks about how much shoreline property she used to have... She may have been able to save her property if she acted sooner.

Okay, I know I'm stupid but I'm seeking an answer. I understand rising sea levels, however, the Great lakes are above sea level and drain into the ocean (the St. Lawrence). Sitting well above sea level, why would lake water be rising too? Wouldn't the lake just continue to empty into the (lower) ocean and maintain it's average level?
@ElectrologyNow
@ElectrologyNow 4 жыл бұрын
Okay ... maybe I figured this out? Rising Earth temperatures causes more rainfall (and drier in other areas). More rainfall in the Great Lakes increases water levels beyond the capacity for drainage? Maybe that's the connection to "Climate Change?"
@jeanninegodwin2285

We are getting much more rain in storms now. The Planet X System has a lot to do with rising water levels. Some of the rain we get is coming from one of the planets that recently moved into our Solar System as part of the Planet X System; it is capable of dumping 3 months of rain in several hours! We are in for more changes! Some scientists are fully aware of this System but the government has been mum. The discovery of Planet X was announced in 1983; after that there was silence on the subject. In 2017 MIT in California announced they had found Planet X, but not much is ever said about it. Planet X has an elliptical orbit and comes around every 400 years or so and causes destruction on Earth each time; some passes are worse than others.

My dauhter & hubbie bought a house in NYC 10 years back that is basically at river level - I had to bite my tongue but I had already been making the point for years that there is likely only about 30 years before a lot of waterside homes are going to have a problem......just once already there was a NYC hurricane that threatened the area(Sandy?) - they had to stay with friends just in case....the basement took in some water but they were lucky otherwise, even tho the nearby river did rise very high the walls kept it mostly away.....do not buy property near water these days...half the world will have to move in the next 50 years or so, that's if the population hasn't died off from heat stroke ! We dont listen that's the human problem...the warnings have been coming at us for more than 25 years & STILL so many poo-poo the whole global warming thingy ! I hope these homes can be saved tho for a few more years with lots of rocks to keep the sand in place - very sad !

Tax assessor came to see a farmers land. Farmer said go ahead, look around just stay out of the fenced area where the bulls are. The assessor whipped out his badge and said, look here Mr farmer, with this badge I can go where ever I want, and proceeded to authoritatively enter the fenced area. A bull began to snort, dig at the ground and started to charge the assessor who now was running. The bull was getting closer and the farmer yelled, "Show him your badge". Now lake levels are rising and we ask the epa to show the great lakes their badges, oh and by the way, here's 40 million. The simple solution is offer folks the cash to relocate. State could do this easily, but they won't. Instead Ms Govnor will throw many millions to the wind. When I'm in charge things will be different.

@Elizabeth Frantes You can use this also if you like; Last week I went to the county office and filled out three D B A certificates (doing business as). I am now doing business as "National and County Great Lakes Water Level Study Foundation", "Environmental Impact Study Associates" and " Federal Aid Committee Disaster Advisors". I would be interested in bidding on the Great Lakes problem. Please let me know how to get on the list of bidders. I can hire a typist, have some really cool badges printed up and hang credentials on the walls of my office. I've already met with affiliates of other organizations and have determined that 40 million won't be nearly enough to study such an immense situation. My initial evaluation will be closer to two hundred million dollars. If you want my official statement, I'll have it on your desk in the morning.
