The “Only 52 of us can go” speech brings tears to this man’s eyes every time I watch it…😢 Champa (the big guy) is an example of an Actor who only had a couple small scenes but ABSOLUTELY knocked it out of the freakin park. Fantastic scene in a great episode. Loved your reaction to the little “surprise” at the end….🤣 and Erinwright… whoo buddy. 🤪 I think he was very remorseful after realizing how out of had the protomolecule project had gotten, but realizing that he was going to be blamed for everything- (rightly so it could be argued) his ruthless “earth first at all cost” side came out - big time😬

This is what I think about Errinwright: He had earlier formulated the plan to destroy the Karakum and simultaneously poison Korshinov...we know that because he had the customized enzymatic poison some point earlier, and he said that was difficult to get. Preventing the Martians from getting the Protomolecule hybrid would possibly keep him out of prison, and that was as much as he'd planned at that point. But when Avasarala told him she was going to meet Mao, he quickly realized he had the chance to get rid of Avasarala (the only one who knew the depth of his involvement) and put Mao back under his thumb in one stroke. "You give a monkey a stick, inevitably he will beat another monkey to death with it." I wonder if the writers were referencing the ape sequence of "2001: A Space Odyssey," in which an alien intelligence induced an ape to use a stick as a weapon. On the trip to Mao's yacht, Avasarala revealed her fear, Cotyar revealed his guilt, and Bobbie found a new team to join. Team ABC was born. But...the way Avasarala swagged onto the yacht.... "Scene 52" always manages to squeeze a man-tear out of my eyes. This was a dramatic moment that the series had built up since season 1, the same kind of survivor's guilt that put Miller on Eros with a bomb was driving Naomi to possible suicide to save people she couldn't save from Eros. We know from things like Dawes' story of his sister that Belters understand the "cold equations." The "cold equations" constantly loom as over Belter life. They probably all know someone or of someone who has met that moment...and when given a chance to think, they realized that moment had come for them. The big guy, Champa, was the MVP of the episode, an example of how this series gives juicy dramatic moments to one-off characters that most shows reserve for the main cast. When the Somambulist was lifting from Ganymede, as they were being challenged by the Martians, did you notice that Naomi was again checking out her Protomolecule torpedo?

Chappa doesn't have a shotgun, he just has a stick. However, he IS a Belter and he appeals to the Belter's fatalistic sense of pragmatically utilitarian ethics to get them to recognize the needs of the "community" and accept what needs to be done. Belter's recognize the cold laws of physics, and that if more than 52 of them board the Weeping Somnambulist then Everyone will die.

The scene where Naomi opens the airlock and faces the crowd is one of my favourites moment in the show it's so heartwrecking. I would like to add a few more words. I think one of the show's shortcomings is that it never really shows the world from the point of view of the belters. (except for a few scenes) We never get into their mindset. It is as the big guy said. Belters know from when they are born that they have it harder than anyone else. Space is unforgiving. If there is not enough oxygen and they are unable to act quickly and keep their mind and choose to sacrifice - then everyone will die. Belters also are the opposite of an individualistic society. In our modern neoliberal societies we get told that everyone has to think about themselves before they think of others. Belters are the opposite. They know that if they don't put their community first, then they all lose. Anderson Dawes has a few quotes in some of his speeches. Like "The more you share the more your bowl will be plentiful.". They're sort of a communist society albeit more like an anarcho-communist and not an auhoritarian communist society - that is one of the points of conflicts between him and Fred Johnson. As such their primary loyalties are with the belters as a whole, secondly with their local community (or faction or tribe), then with their families or chosen families and very last themselves. Also see Diogo's uncle who "sacrificed" himself to save the others and his nephew.
@RamblersInc
@RamblersInc Жыл бұрын
That's so true. They're almost seen as minor characters. I hope we get to see more. I forgot about his uncle. Sacrifice (in some shape or form) is unfortunately a large part of their lives.

This is what The Expanse does better then any other show IMO. Side/supporting characters. Some characters like Lopez & the Cap of the Donenger from S1 or the Big Belter Dude from this ep are just one or two eps characters yet they are so memorable and well fleshed out cos the world they live in is so well crafted. The main cast are brilliant, don't get me wrong, but fuck, does this show shine with is supporting cast be they one scene (like the faux hawk belter protester early S1), a few eps or a season long arc.

theres a little story playing out with the extras in that scene. When the women are getting on, an older woman is walking in, but keeps looking back at the men's line. A young man, likely her son, signals to her like "go on. "l'll be right behind you". The next time you see him, its he's almost in a trance as he intently walks as his line is entering, his mind is probably just going "Please, please, please, please, please". When he gets stopped, you just see him sigh, the look on his face reveals how crushed and afraid he feels. Then later, after Champa puts Naomi back on the Sonambulist, and signals "thank you" to her through the plass port, you see the young man over his shoulder, he kinda glares in resigned anger at the pack of Champa's head, then puts on a brave smile, even manages to give a casual wave goodbye. An emotionally effecting small story, told entirely without dialogue, sold just through the performance, in clips that don't even add up to minute of screen time. Damn I love this show.

Erinwright was winging it. He probably planned to kill Korshinov and destroy the Karakum but I think when Avasarala told her about the message she got from Jules-Pierre he realized that this might be a great opportunity to get rid of her and cover up his involvment and just went with the flow. It's not really something he did really, she was gonna go anyway but it aligned perfectly with him killing Korshinov so he could message Mao and get him to do the dirty work. Such good writing and the acting was outstanding, you've seen so many different sides of Sadavir. Really well done. That belter guy in the docks is another example of great acting. He was nothing more than an extra with a few lines but he killed it so hard. Wes Chatham and Ty Frank praised the hell out him and they said he did get noticed by the producers and likely ended up with work in other projects becasue of this scene. Many extras trying to get noticed and disturb the scene in various ways so they often have to stop and reset but this guy impressed the hell out of everyone with his acting. Well deserved in my opinion. Was smiling at the end of last episodes when you guys were wtf that thing just killed 2 squads of marines and Holden wants to hunt him down? Well yeah he had a Martian gunship to apply t othe problem lol. :) His speech at the end and especially the delivery is legendary. Normally they try to go under the Martian's radar but this time he was not in the mood to dick around so he announced it in the clear. Also shows that he was not a bad navy officer, he clearly aware of the bigger picture here. Nobody cares about some refugee ship enough to risk significant damage in their ship when the Karakum was just destroyed by he UN and they were ready to throw it down with them. Also, a masterclass in how to end on a cliffhanger. It should be called "Cliffhanger, the show". Every episodes ends with some peaceful moments before in the very last second something happens and you go..."oh shit"! :)

The poison was not in the drink. Korshinov looks at the glass, Errinwright picks it up, drinks it and says, "No, Piotr." Holds the program up and says, "It was 186 minutes ago." He explains that the enzyme is tailored to one person's DNA and is absorbed THRU THE SKIN.

This is probably my second favorite episode in all of television! We'll discuss my number one another time! In this one there were so many moments that were just so damn good! Erinwright is probably the best damn poker player by holding his hand close to the vest till the last moment! Holden obsessed at chasing Moby Dick! Chrisjen displaying her skills with swagger by confronting JP Mao! Naomi's guilt of not saving enough of her people on Eros and trying to right that wrong! You notice her for a brief moment checking on her little secret? We fans affectionately refer to this one as episode " 52" I would never in my mind believe that one character in basically one scene could cause a grown man to cry! Chompa: " You knew on the day you were born that your life would be hard! So let's be tough and do what needs to be done! If we have to stay back? We have to stay back!" " You not finished yet!" 😭 I've seen this episode more times than I can count and it still rips my heart out! Looking forward to the next one!

Have you ever considered that the reason that characters may be clean-shaven is because they shave every morning, rather than letting stubble grow?
