Once again I'm finding myself tripping up on issues involving agency. Is it not possible to use the sentence as it is, provided the agent(/s) doing the pretending has(/have) already been clearly established in the text/conversation? I get the impression, perhaps naively, that it's an issue that can be solved with context just as easily as with grammar. Not being very well read, I don't know if this train of thought might be completely erroneous.
