Correction: The group is Secret Garden (the lady in black was a guest singer). The song is "Nocturne". It was in fact written as an instrumental and not originally intended for Eurovision. Due to the contest rules they had to add some vocals. The lyrics consist only of 24 words. Ironically enough the violinist is Irish (it's ironic because Ireland won in '92, '93, '94 and '96). Musically it's a mixture of New Age/neo-classical and traditional Norwegian folk music. As a Norwegian I'm biased for saying this, but I possibly consider this the best Eurovision winner of all time!

Fun fact, Secret Garden’s Rolf Løvland also composed ‘You raise me up’, and Brendan Graham wrote the lyrics. Secret Garden were the first ones to ever perform that song in the early 2002 together with lead singer Brian Kennedy. It began to reach world wide recognition after it was recorded and ones again released with Josh Groban as lead singer in 2003 and then again with Westlife in 2005.

I thought I'd just mention that the group is actually called Secret Garden and 'Nocturne' was the song they entered with. Either way this is my favourite Eurovision song of all time. This is an inspired piece of music that is actually a Norwegian/Irish collaboration called "Secret Garden". They have created many albums in traditional style which are, as you mention, related to Enya, McKennit and legendary "Clannad". There are some traditional cultural ties between Norway and Ireland which comes through in both visual and musial styles.... Can you believe that the writer of this music also wrote the norwegian winner of 1985? The other winner that is closest to this one in style was the Irish winner the year after in '96.... "The Voice" with Eimear Quinn.

That's not true. Waterloo by ABBA was from Sweden and sung in English and that was the seventies. All of Ireland's winners have been in English, when arguably Irish is the true native language. They could sing in whatever language they wanted, and English only became more popular later on in ESC history because more English songs were being played on radios and were more popular in Europe as the Times went on.

Åsa Jinder, who is playing it is a "riksspelman" ("spelman" is a person who plays on these traditional folk instruments, and "riks" mean like "national"), being a riksspelman means like you're a master of that instrument, like the best in the country, it's a badge of mastery for Swedish folk musicians. She is also the mother of the musician Little Jinder.

It should definietly ONLY be optional for nations to choose to play live instruments during the show - to have the complete live-orchestra back will only limit the musical amusement and variation + it will only make the contest so much more expensive if the musicians have to learn 43 songs! It might had its charm in the pre-2000's but it wouldn't work nowadays.. Anyway this entry was absolutely stunning - and to me it's just another proof how unimportant lyrics are in music - you can easily hear just a melody or listen to songs in foreign languages and still get very touched by hearing the song, and that's what music is all about to me, that it can create emotions and make you feel something in life.. I will recommend that you listen to Belgium's entry from 2003 Jake - it's a very unique ethnic song that's is sung in a complete made-up language :)

I kind of agree with you on all points except one (and I do agree that a full orchestra as back in the days would add nothing to most modern songs and potentially take away a lot although the orchestra was not obligatory, if you had a near perfect pop song as I think "Puppet On A String" is the Orchestra might as well not be there whereas in "Waterloo" it enhances the song but the song'd studio version did fine without it and went on to do even better) and that is the amount of work for the musicians. In any given orchestra (not just the prestigious Symphonic ones, even the very light ones, even the brass bands, marching bands, whatever) the musicians have to learn and to a point where they really know it by heart the equivalent to hundreds of 43 x 3 minutes of mostly unchallenging music, without that many chords, not that many keys or dramatic changes thereof, not much space - none, usually - for solos by a single instrument. Besides, most of the Public Networks I know in Europe have kept their orchestras, some like the BBC, RAI, RTVE and SVT have half a dozen but even countries you might not think able to afford it like Albania and Romania (which even when it owed money to the EBU was keeping its orchestras) or even Bosnia and Herzegovina or small, tiny ones like Andorra and Luxembourg which have not even participated recently have them, I am sure all musicians belonging to those orchestras would have no problem, the artists might, since it's 2018 and most of this year's (or last year's for that matter - or as you point out since 2000 really) entries were too generic pop or specifically ethnic(with pre-recorded specific ethnic instruments not found in a traditional/classical orchestra) to need a full - or even a small one, or parts of an orchestra at all. I do love Nocturne and I asked my parents to buy me the single (yeah, I'm *that* old) which they did. Vinyl, 45 rpm. But I am not saying "those were the good old days" there have always been bad songs in the ESC as well as good ones and to put it politely the good ones have seldom been the majority and the winning songs have been good only in a few years. From 1956 to today this is after all for pop or folk songs and any entry that deviates into rock or jazz or soul or gospel can do either extremely well or rather poorly. No middle ground there. Fun fact: Composer Rolf Lovland met the violinist Fionnalua Sherry the previous year when he was composer and conductor of the Norwegian entry in Dublin and she was playing in the Irish orchestra that accompanied all the songs. They fell in love and formed the group Secret Garden with this result the following year.

This song changed Eurovision for good. I consider 1995 the start of the modern Eurovision Song Contest. A silent peaceful revolution I'd say. The number 2 of 1995, Spain, was such a great song too, but this one was something else. I still remember both songs to this day and I was just 14.

Great to see you move back in time !!! The newer generation of ESC fans tend to neglect contests pre-2000. The earlier years tend to be overlooked nowadays but there are great outstanding performances from every decade. I watched my first contest way back in 1970 in the UK at the age of 10 and my god, I'm still enthralled by it every year.... ApoDwKiApoKei The second fact isn't entirely true. Playback was allowed in 1973 but there was still an orchestra present, if you want to use it. Instruments were allowed to be played live until 1998. Until 1997 all instruments used for the song had to be present on stage, even if the music wasn't played live. After 1998, no live music was allowed anymore.

The strange instrument you wondered about is called a nyckelharpa (it has no official English name, but translated it means key harp) which is a Swedish instrument used in Swedish (mostly) folk musik. The woman playing it here is Swedish National Folk Musician Åsa Jinder. The title of National Folk Musician is an honour only awarded those who are experts in their field of folk music by playing a certain instrument in a certain style (often regional).

Since then, Løvland noticed that the song touched people. So together with Fionnuala Sherry, Løvland got the Irish lyricist Brendan Graham to write english lyrics to the song. So how can you say Rolf Løvland is only a co-writer? When it was him that composed and produced it. Brendan Graham is the co-writer, his only job was to write the english lyrics.

I have love this and bought the CD of Secret Garden and if you got lost in this music you will certainly be taken to another place listening to the CD. Enya is from Ireland and the girl playing the violin is also from Ireland. The tin whistle is mostly an Irish instrument. The two Norwegians who wrote Secret Garden are brilliant writers.
