Joost was orphaned at a young age. A lot of the song recounts him travelling Europe, trying to escape the bad thoughts but not being able to feel sure of himself anywhere. Hence the line "Io sono in Italia, but I still feel pain." Also the reference to Papaoutai, hearing it on the radio, ofc that is another song about a missing father, so it resonated with him on his travels.

Sadly Joost was orphaned at a young age. When he was 12 years old, he lost his papa (father) to cancer. A year later he lost his mother to a cardiac arrest. His dad always told him there were no borders/limits and everything was possible if you just believed! When him and his parents used to watch the Eurovision together, he always used to say:"look dad, one day I will be performing up on that stage!" The ending of the song is a reflection of him always believing in the words his father told him. The burning house is a reflection of him leaving his grieving past behind him, and finally moving on in life.

This song is dedicated to his father who was a writer and told him that borders are invented by people meaning we are all one. Joost wrote a book to and also poetry. He performs in clubs and festivals like Lowlands, Pinkpop, Pukkelpop. He won prices also and has lots of fans. You can find a clip with English lyrics online. He is also on wikipedia. Lots of concert videos on KZbin. The dancing is retro and was popular in the nineties in the Netherlands also the fashion. Still hot in clubs all over Europe. On his concerts people form mosh pits and he dances in the middle but he also dares to read poetry and cry. The costumes are funny and over the top But the message is deep. You've not heard a Dutch entry before as Dutch as this. Behind the 'fun' there is the sorrow of missing his parents. Kids are supposed to be happy, right? What if you don't? Nobody can help, even if you pay them. And it doesn't care where you go or what you eat, you can't escape the pain. This song is really clever, has different layers. I'm not going to talk about the lyrics because plenty of other people already do that. The music and music video format is made in 90s style. The music is 90's Eurodance with Happy Hardcore elements. Happy Hardcore was very popular in the 90s in the Netherlands At the beginning of the song there is a shout. "Europe" ""lets come together" "is now or never" etc. That is a reference to Scooter The piano melody in the chorus when he sings Euro pa pa pa pa pa hey. Is a reference to Charly lownoise Mental Theo who made Happy Hardcore in the 90s. e.g Charly Lownoise and Mental Theo - Your Smile Charly Lownoise and Mental Theo - wonderful days The hard last part of the music is Made by DJ Paul Elstak Who also made Happy Hardcore in the 90's. e.g Dj Paul Elstak - Luv You More Dj Paul Elstak - Rainbow In The Sky He is also in the car in the video. DJ Paul also made Gabber (Hardcore) music. GabberHouse was very big in the Netherlands in the 90s. It was a youth culture that originated in the Netherlands. 1 in 3 young people was Gabber (age 14 - 24). Those young people dancing (Hakkuh) in the video they look like the 90 Gabbers. There are English subtitles available for this mv Myrtle. Just for that little bit more understanding of the song you know 😉. This is a back to the 90s song from beginning to end for me. It was the time of different forms of house and of hope & positivity because the EU was in its infancy (the disappearing of borders, the Euro all happened in the 90s) There are so many Eurodance formations, DJs etc from The Netherlands and as far as music is considered it's a mash of elements of 90s hits. Oh and as far as the track suits go: that was the dress code for Gabbers. (Gabber is a form of Hardcore House which originated in Rotterdam)

No, the burning had nothing to do with Europe, it has to do with saying goodbye to his parents, he burns away his pain so to say. He father said that the world is without borders and that is his message, a world with no borders and freedom to move beyond the small Frysian village where he and his parents lived. After his dad died from cancer, his mom died of cardiac arrest, his older brother and sister (16 years his elder) took him in and so he still lived with the family that he loved.

That the borders are made by the people. He always told his father that he would one day take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. They always watched it together. Many spoofs in this video, like for example the American influence in Europa (cowboy hat scene) and the famous painting Last Supper (diner table scene) that's hanging in Italy. The scene with fire is Joost's struggle that he is leaving behind (like burning ships/bridges) but can be symbol for Europe's (as Europe being a 'house') struggle (the many wars in the past) that we have to put behind us to unite.

Eurovision is an emotional affair for Joost. As a child, he watched it together with his parents. "Parents, one day I'm going to be on Eurovision stage" and he made it. I'm in Italy, but I still feel the pain, etc.", I feel it's directed at his parents... Joost loved his parents and still does. His lyrics are mostly very deep, but the melody is happy, danceable and the clips of his song are presented in a fun way. Joost himself said that his musical style is diverse. When Joost was asked what song they should listen to in order to understand you. He answered Florida 2009 (it's about his parents) and Wachtmuziek (it's about mental health). Last woman giving first reaction nailed it imo. Really good reading of the artpiece. It is not confirmed this is part of the actual message of the song. But if you know what you are looking for you can't unsee it. So knowing Joost's style I'm very sure this was meant to portrait this message alongside the others inside of the song, about him losing his parents. Great to see this broader picture I saw when looking at it, is translating well to people. It makes the song very strong as it has multiple layers, multiple messages, fun, seriousness, political critique and can be interpreted different by everyone. Never been a big esc watcher at all, especially since the dutch acts often are really bad. But would love to see this one actually win

I think they had the subtitles on, unless Carlena speaks fluent Dutch, her interpretation definitely felt like they had the subtitles on, they just aren't visible in the video on our end, which may be due to how Rebekah edits the video, though that's just my assumption.

Subtitles were on 😁 I am definitely not fluent in Dutch. Knowing nothing of the background of the artist, my interpretation was based on how I experienced the song and my understanding of the cultural/political climate over the years. As per usual I generally just go off how it makes me feel. The beautiful thing is that music is a work of art and art can be interpreted in many ways. Individuals may see/hear/understand a particular piece based on their own experiences or understanding. That doesn't make one person's analysis or opinion any better or worse than the other. Just: different. My opinion: It was a good song and gets bonus points for taking me on my little rollercoaster ride.

Carlena's interpretation is definitely more interesting than the standard one. There is an appeal for votes with the mention of various countries. And he likes to associate it with his late father too, though without subtitles I don't think that will help his song so much. The flag apparently represents both the E.U. and Europe (Council of Europe), though most definitely associate it with the former. Thanking Europe at the end of songs has always seemed strange to me. After the 60s Eurovision wasn't just about Europe and now it's even more global. So I do find the opening very cringy and the appeal only to Europe in general limited. As a dance song there's plenty of good things in it and it has its own niche which is good. The quiet ending does feel rather sudden and may confuse people though it sounds nice. If the playful feel is replicated on stage it should do well. Definitely way better that what little Little Big I've heard, so I don't make that comparison.

Thing is I want to enjoy it, and I do respect it and find it fun to listen to. It's not in my top 10 because I don't necessarily fill my top 10 with songs I find fun, but songs I genuinely love. This isn't one of them and I'd never vote for it, but it's super fun!

To me, this is 2024's Cha Cha Cha. It could be #1 in televote (baby lasagna is also a strong candidate) but the jurys will most likely vote for Ukraine and Italy

​@patrikiosvatemanopoulos Understandable, it's probably between this and Rim Tim Tagi Dim. I assume they'll split the televote in Croatia's favor. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends top 10 or even top 5 at the end. I might be wrong, but I think Cha Cha Cha had more fans in all age groups. I think this song is for young people and those from the generation that grew up with this. I also think Croatia has that same benefit that Finland had last year where people of most ages can vote for it.

I'm guessing there will be a draft this year? If so, I have a weird suggestion... since someone keeps picking all the huge favorites just to win every year, how about we make it fair for everyone? If anyone picks the #1 odds on favorite, they get deducted 50%. For example, if #1 earns 500 total pts, only 250 would count towards the draft. #2 keeps 60%, #3 keeps 70%, #4 keeps 80%, #5 keeps 90%. I see them everywhere around me. I live in a polder, we would be living under water if they weren't there, some still in action when the wind blows the seawater in the rivers around my city into the land when it's already high tide. My daughter lives in Schiedam, she can see 6 very big windmills from her house. I live only 6km from Kinderdijk. But so many more in this landscape everywhere.
