Escape Attempt From Jonestown (November 1977) Jim Jones ANGRY!

The tape consists of a portion of a meeting in Jonestown during which two young men - Tommy Bogue and Brian Davis - who made an unsuccessful escape attempt appear before the community to explain their actions and to learn what discipline they will face as a result. Neither the beginning nor the end of the meeting appear here, so there is no firm indication of what the community’s decision will bewhen the tape ends. (The boys’ voices are difficult to differentiate, and both are indicated on the accompanying transcript as “young man in trouble.”)
Tommy and Brian had apparently left the Jonestown community under cover of darkness after having stolen several items such as flashlights and matches. They had made few plans beyond the escape itself, and weren’t even going to stay together: one had planned to go to Venezuela, and the other planned to live along a local river, catching fish to survive. Jim Jones is upset, in part, because he says he has had to involve the Guyana government in locating the young men, costing him good will and political capital; the community is upset, in part, because it lost a day of work searching for them.
At the beginning of the tape, Jones is reminding the young men of the dangers they faced while they were gone. There are wild animals in the jungle, he says, ranging from tigers and ocelots, to several kinds of snakes that can kill a human being. The animals don’t bother the people of Jonestown, he reassures them later in the tape, “because we have a protective aura. Nothing comes in here.” But that protection doesn’t extend beyond the perimeter of the community.
Jones also tells Tommy and Brian that everyone in the country was on the lookout for them. He had alerted every person in the government, from the prime minister on down to the local police. There is a law, he says later, making everyone in the country responsible for returning Temple members to Jonestown. And that’s how they were caught. “How do you suppose we knew where you were? You passed two government people. They informed us. All the natives informed us.”
What’s more, he adds, had they made it to the Venezuelan border, “[t]he Border Patrol said, if you try to cross, you’d be shot.” If they had been captured by the local police, they could have been thrown in jail and “whipped 39 times with a cat o’nine tails.” And if they hadn’t been caught soon, someone would have found them in the jungle after five or six days, and they would have been barely alive.
At some points in the tape, Jones asks the young men what they would have done to survive, although - apparently in an effort to prevent them from lying - he reminds them that the Jonestown leadership knows a lot already. When the escapees say they would have found jobs, Jones sounds perplexed. There are jobs available at Jonestown, he says. Beyond that, they have free medical care, as well as the love of the community.
Later in the meeting, though, Jones offers another reason the young men shouldn’t have left, and the tone of his voice suggests this one is closer to his true belief: “There’s no possible way we can tolerate anarchy,” he says, “no possible way that we can tolerate people going out and living on their own.”
Tommy and Brian apparently have declared they wanted to return to the U.S., but Jones says they won’t return to what he calls “that fascist Babylon” until everybody in San Francisco has joined them. At that point, he says to cheers and applause, “then we’ll be glad to be rid of the likes of both of you.”
Jones’ anger seems genuine. He speaks through gritted teeth on several occasions. He sets the tone of the abuse leveled at the boys by calling them “vermin,” “parasitical,” “contemptible.” At one point, he snaps, “You’re vile. You’re evil. You’re insidious. You’re low.” At another, he literally spits numerous times in disgust.
While Jones’ criticism of the boys is the most prolonged, he is by no means alone, and other community members follow his lead. While tentative at first, eventually a number of voices speak against them. The anger of the community is as deep as Jones’. “We didn’t want to look for you at all,” one woman shouts. “We woulda left you [in the jungle].”
A woman who had counseled one of them, promising him confidentiality, says she thinks their actions have relieved her of that obligation. Jones agrees - “It’s all obliterated… Your privileged relationship with your counselor no longer exists in this room. She’s ordered by the good of the collective to tell everything you’ve said” - and the woman speaks of the young man’s lack of interest in the community, in the cause, and in socialism itself. At other points in the tape, other women - or perhaps the same one - says the young man described himself as being more of a capitalist than a socialist, although he is apparently willing to accept the benefits of a socialist life.

To me, just trying to escape was a selfish no-brainer. Jones was an easy mark. Someone could’ve offed him long before Leo Ryan’s visit and the senseless loss of life that followed. Although It may have also ended badly with a machete to Jones’ neck, there’s a chance it would’ve ended the total madness right then and there. He had his loyalists, but seemingly no one capable of taking over with his decapitated corpse lying there. So many more than we know wanted the fuck out of there. They probably would’ve cheered his murder and celebrated his killer.

On the jonestown website he wrote an account of what he and his best friend went through when they tried to escape, and what his friend said the last time he saw him alive. It's harrowing. The boy who died apparently wanted to go with Leo Ryan but his family didn't, and since he was only 17, Ryan wouldn't have taken him. He and the others wouldn't have known they were all about to die.

Here's a fun fact. The first voice you hear in this clip is Stephan Jones, Jim's son. Just as mean and evil as his dad, the would partake in punishing those who dared to oppose his father. Stephan survived the mass-murder because he was taking part in a basketball tournament at Gergetown (in fact, he was watching a movie while the event took place). He was never punished by law for anything that happened in Jonestown. In every interview he has done since, he acts as if he was a victim.

Cuz I'm sure there were some who drank it not because they really wanted to or even believed the BS Jim spouted out, but because they were probably so tramautized by that point and depressed, probably also saw no other way out. He knew who he was dealing with. Religion is mostly a ruse to get people to feel better about themselves. It was a Marxist cult filled with greedy, and power hungry people. Jones knew how to talk to them and what language excited them. Nasty and foul is what they craved. All cons follow the same guideline, let you believe you are doing something good for others (the BS layer on the top), while enticing you with what you really want (the true intent) beneath that. This gives people a permanent out, they are helping and doing something positive, and you are just a bad guy.

It really depends on how much he revealed* and how soon. Did he have gnnmen in America? If he did, I don't remember anybody saying he did. If this was the case, people should have left in droves back then. In Jonestown, it was probably too late(unless you wanted to die)... *At first, he claimed to be a Christian minister that accepted black people. And, supposedly, he was convincing. Gradually, he morphed into a monster. But, according to a doc on him, at all points in his ministry, he was always either a hypocrite or an obvious cult leader!

I saw an interview with Thom Bogue years after it happened and if I recall him and Brian were chained together for 3 weeks to complete hard labor 18 hours a day as part of their punishment for trying to escape. It was just heartbreaking to hear him also describe the last time he saw Brian alive Thom was one of those leaving on the plane with Congressman Ryan's party. He turned and said to Brian please come with us he said Brian just looked at him and simply, sadly said I can't. That was the last time Thom ever saw brain alive. Thoms first-hand account of his time at Jonestown was also featured in the book A Thousand Lives by Juila Scheers.

There must’ve been many more than a few, who were just as angry at Jim Jones as they were with their peers, who either tried to escape or otherwise go against Jones in any way. The language, the sick sadistic way they spoke of and to each other. These were people seeking peace and harmony? How many of the 900+ knew they were sold a bill of goods, with all the infighting and extreme unpleasantness that gripped this armed encampment, many months prior to the massacre. They were malnourished, persecuted, ridiculously overworked, sleep deprived and in some cases sexually abused. Jones must’ve been ripe for being poisoned, shot, decapitated on a fairly regular basis. Someone needed the balls. With his sudden death, it’s possible the whole thing could’ve fallen apart. There was a point where they all knew they were going to die anyway. Like the passengers on Flight 93 on 9/11, doing nothing was not an option. I know my take on this is insane in most people’s eyes, i just think that even one person, acting alone, picking his spot and quickly murdering Jones could've ended things and saved many lives.

I wouldn’t have even called him father. I would just call him Jim. I don’t care what his crazy members would try to do to me I’ll just call him Jim. by that time, Jones is already increasingly paranoid, and also mentally unstable, by the time he was already killing himself slowly on drugs. But that calling him father that all started in Redwood Valley or San Francisco. my grandmother visited his church about four years before the massacre, and when she listened to his sermon, she knew that something wasn’t right. from what I’ve heard from my grandpa, some lady invited her to a People’s Temple service in Los Angeles. And when she stepped foot in the church and listen to his sermon, she knew that when he spoke wasn’t a Christian message. When he first pastored in Indiana, he preached a Christian message, but then his druggie started and he disavowed Christianity in 1970.

To think these people thought he was the embodiment if Christ. The lies and manipulation, the sleep deprivation. He was a master story teller. Starvation, working like slaves. Yet we see it time and time again. People falling into that trap.

This is actually kind of hilarious. The kid holds himself up remarkably well in the face of this lunacy and this idiotic, lynch, mob. All of his responses are just measured and rational. It's funny to hear how it makes Jones go berserk.
