In my opinion, the concept of a survival horror taking place on an island populated with giant man eating insects sounds like a decent game, like the bugs having hidden weaknesses that their real counterpart has such as changes in temperature and being repulsed to certain plants or items. Too bad this is what the development team came up with: a terrible clone of resident evil that feels more like a Frankenstein's monster of random plot elements and poorly written characters than a good video game. Anyways, great review man. Made me laugh all the way through.

I totally agree with you. Any horror game revolving around giant monsters should be impossible to screw up- the player should never be more powerful than the enemies in a horror game. And thank you very much!

The development team, by the way, being Spike before they merged with Chunsoft and made Danganronpa. I think this game was rushed to get content for the wii out, because this game in Japan, originally called Necro-Nesia, was a launch title. Third party launch titles rarely turn out great, especially when made from scratch.

Beelzebub was the Lord of Flies so at least the main boss being a giant fly was clever. Lots of video games do the "enemy's changing" to the point the game isn't recognizable. RE1 starts off with regular zombies and ends with Tyrants/Hunters/Giant spiders. RE4 starts with peasants and ends with zombie soldiers armed with miniguns.

When they got to the Cave Of Time i thought that was the end of the game. I didn't know it would take us back to the beginning and have us save the characters this time. It's very weird.

When Brutalmoose covered this game, I knew there was quite a bit he left out for time purposes, but there is something from his review that I wanna point out. "Michelle is a sophomore majoring in insect physiology. She has come to the island to work on a report for school." The manual does confirm what you said about this all being Michelle's idea, but here's the weird part: girl, you got all the information you need about the island! You said yourself that you have an encyclopedia all about it! If all this was really about the Cave of Time, could you not have come up with a better excuse?? And the manual also says this: "By collecting purple fragments, you can cause something good to happen." With how vague that was, I was assuming they'd be used for a clannad-style way of getting the good ending, not a way to add artificial replayability. It's like a poor man's Resident Evil 4. On launch day, just about 2000 suckers bought this game in Japan, where it was called Necro-Nesia. For some reason, I consider that title way cooler than the title we were stuck with. Although, apparently we got the better version of the game. The localization is allegedly improved from Necro-Nesia. Oh, those poor fools over there... And finally, this was a launch title in Japan as well. Basically means that this game was rushed in order to get some 3rd party content for the wii... Wait a minute... Spike?? Spike made this game? Like, half of Spike-Chunsoft, the company that made Danganronpa??? What the fuck?

16:33 you say that but it isnt without merrit. Some ant species will in fact self destruct. Colobopsis saundersi for instance. Also Colobopsis cylindrical which exsplodes in a toxic goo. And Colobopsis explodens which have no sting or mandables and has to exsplode to protect the colony

From your description of this game, it sounds kind of similar to Until Dawn if it has combat mechanic and sucks ass: A cast of assholes and a plot twist coming halfway out of nowhere.

Hope the two of you have fun next Hallowing then. The sad thing is I can actually see that time travel mechanic being a clever way in term of in-game lore to have New Game+ mode. If it's better introduced, and the game well designed of course. Instead of having the game arbitrarily lock the player in this loop of '1st run you can't save anyone', and '2nd run you save everyone' maybe have it tie into the players actual performance. The player can try to do the loop over and over again (going into more new game+) until the player get the skill to have a perfect run where the player save everyone (basically like Until Dawn). Of course, that requires both the game being fun to play, and the cast have at least some degree of like-ability.

Those controls and graphics are just crap. But this game idea could be done right in better hands. And to be honest, the idea of "Amazon Lizard Women" is so incredibly stupid that, at least to me, it warps around into being amazing.

Yes, Bug Island is the actual name of the game; super cartoony for a survival horror game. The Japanese version is called "Necro-Nesia" not sure if that's an improvement or not.

You think this is bad? At least in this game the combat works. In Obscure the hit detection is so bad that enemies just fall down when they die without any warning and I didn't even finish because one of the turning puzzles happens so fast that I never had time to finish it.

Happy Halloween Darklord, I'm sure your Halloween will still be fun, even if you can't go trick or treat. You and Iffy can have a scary movie night maybe. I can't have any candy at the moment cause I'm trying to get back in shape. So no Kit Kat's or other yummies for me this year :( Ah! The good old tank controls. I remember those days, they really annoyed me when I played Resident Evil 2 for the first time cause I had no clue how to move, I kept spinning around in a circle. In time though I got more better at the controls and by the time Silent Hill got released, I was ready for it. A horror game with typical cliché stereotype characters, it's something I have never quite understood with the horror genre as to why in movies and some games they want to make the characters as detestable and as dumb as humanly possible, you think they would want the audience to care for the characters and be afraid for their safety rather than celebrate their demise.

Thank you! Halloween was quite fun; I played the first 1.5 nights of FNAF Sister Location, chickened out, and then went back and got to Night 3. Good luck getting into shape; I need to make that a priority too. Iffy and I still didn't get to do anything for Halloween, but next year we're going to do Rey and Kylo Ren couples costumes. I've never understood why so many horror games have done that stupid-ass tank control scheme; it's like they think horrid controls will improve the horror. Spoony said Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem didn't do that and he loved the game for it.

Sounds like a good idea, you both like Star Wars. I think that was the idea behind it. To make the character in the game more frail and increase the worry while playing. The tank controls never bothered me really, it took some getting used to, but I was able to pick it up pretty quick. I find horror games nowadays more awkward to play because I am so used to the tank controls. I have to unlearn the tank and understand the new controls. The irony. Eternal Darkness is a fantastic game, it really messes with you and breaks the fourth wall alot. I highly recommend that one if you can get a copy of it.
