Escape Room: Sci-Fi Walls

As the Sci Fi escape room project gets close to completion, one of the final steps is creating the walls that will make the rooms a fully immersive experience, so this week Mark and Matt go over the details that will bring this project together.

Awesome stuff! Using jigs rather than crappy tape measures is a great tip! I'm not sure why, but my jigs never made it out of the cutting things part of the build. That's gonna be fixed now. Thanks for the pro-tip. Let the jigging begin! 😜

With every SciFi interior option you guys describe like the "shaped ventholes" my brain says: "Why would someone build vent holes like that in the future, that looks ineffecient as heck?". As goes with all the greeblies you usually see in these environments. Yes, they feel SciFi, but why would you have those in futuristic spaceships?

The template tips are great. It's funny how the more things change, the more they stay the same. I remember years ago Norm Abram saying, "Don't measure if you don't have to." And now, in spite of all the advances in tools and such, whether you're making a futuristic space ship or reproducing antique furniture, the rule stands.

Lol- our most-used measuring device is calipers! The only difference is that they are now digital:-) Gotta love the Norm.

Also, I noticed in your paint scheme you didn't color the texture details differently. Is that going to change, or is that intentional for the purpose of taking the player's eye in intended directions? For example, do you use color to highlight interactive puzzle parts, then deliberately avoid highlighting objects that aren't part of a puzzle to avoid frustration for the players?

Definitely option B. We are trying to keep the atmospherics from getting too busy. We may pop them a bit with metallic dry brushing after installation, but I'm not sure. Matt is working on various alien text stencils that will add another subtle layer. We'll make sure we get footage of that for the install videos. Reference: "MOON" with Sam Rockwell -loved that movie

I gotcha. Yeah, I could picture myself in that room and seeing one of those bits on the wall painted red and saying, "Hey, that's red. Must be a button. Push it. What do you mean it doesn't push? Pull it then? Turn it? It doesn't move? Ok, fine, it's a key then. Tear it off the wall..."

No worries! The framing is plywood. Everything else is MDF. MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. We’re happy to answer any other questions you have 😀👍

Could this be done with cardboard or foam for a lightweight movable piece?

I would probably use 6mm MDF or Sintra for that. I think cardboard or foam isn’t quite stiff enough. I guess it depends on what it’s being used for and how many times it would be (carefully) moved. In “Hollywood” these would be thin vac-formed styrene or PVC. What would you plan to do with it? 😃

They would be used for a one time only LARP setting. Trying to make it as low cost and easy to move to location as possible.

I'm so sorry it took me so long to respond! (very unusual) We used eggshell latex on this one. My NEW favorite spaceship color is Benjamin Moore "Winterwood" code CC-1486😍 in eggshell latex
