Judith so glad you talked about attachment in early childhood. I have 4 children I adopted from foster care & they all endured severe neglect. 10 years later they still really struggle with so many things. It will be a life long journey of healing. Just because you leave a heinous situation doesn’t mean you just suddenly get better. People ask me “your child is still struggling. Why?? It’s been 10 years”. It’s hard to help other people understand trauma & healing unless you’ve walked it yourself. You did an amazing job explaining your experiences. Thank you!!

I understand the sentiments for the dad, but ultimately her story is a proof of her own resilience and perseverance. Had her dad not backed her up, I still believe she would reclaim her own life and destiny. What a remarkable woman! I would love to hear more about her faith journey as well but maybe she didn't want to talk about it on purpose, and I respect that.

But the risk of losing everyone you love is often a major factor in people staying in these groups. Like people praise the Amish for that when they're teenagers, they're told to go explore whatever they want to. Then when they come back they're then baptised and expected to fit into the group. But again they have very little education, no real understanding of how to handle a lot of basic life skills and they give up everything if they choose to leave. It's the illusion of choice, not really free choice

So amazing for Jude's Dad to not only accept & her leaving, but also having his own journey of leaving the faith but remaining in the community! I think we hear so often how it's generally easier for men, especially men of past generations, to just stay; these churches and leaderships are so often built by men & for men. I think it's incredible, and must take a massive amount of humility for him to realize that he was wronged, and how he as a patriarch and father wronged his children. To be able and willing to confront that and continue the work of building these relationships with his children from the ground up is incredibly inspiring to me, and I think is an amazing example for other men that it's never too late ♡

I have to say I got goosebumps when she spoke about her dad's reaction. I almost brought me to tears. I listen to a podcast by Amanda Rae. She escaped from the Kingston Group also known as The Order. She then was on a show where she helped a lot of women escape from various groups, including some from Colorado City. It's so incredible that her parents supported her. I can't imagine the strength it must have taken to say "No, that's not my path" and then have to go and tell her father. Such a beautiful outcome!

There is a woman by the name of Krystin Decker who has a foundation to help people leaving polygamy. Perhaps you can have her on your channel to discuss what she does. She is a survivor of polygamy herself and wrote a book about her experiences.

I was thinking such a foundation should exist. Like Scientology’s Aftermath Foundation. They get donations and ex members are there to help new escapees. They would know and understand the best what they need, though non Mormons could certainly help under their supervision. Knowing such a place exists might give others more hope to escape.

I felt the same fear with my parents (Fundie Baptist). When I came out as non-binary they were confused but we’re open to learning, and genuinely have learned a lot. When I came out as pansexual they kinda saw it coming. When I became a cam SW, they even supported my choices and celebrated my confidence then because I’ve struggled with an eating disorder most of my life and this was a big jump. I had to reassure them that I was safe and then they relaxed. I’m 27 now, and I actually have an amazing friendship with them now, I’d even say best friends! Sometimes our religious parents can REALLY surprise us in the best way.

Some great last words there by Jude in her Linda listen comment. The “disease to please” is so true! We don’t call things out because we don’t want to upset people so it’s easier to go along. I have been guilty of that but have learnt to call a spade a spade. I also listen to my gut because I also know now scientifically it’s a message from my brain weighing up past experiences warning me. I loved Jude’s comment “you can’t throw velvet over a chair and call it a throne”, that cracked me up 😂 I’m really glad you dared say NO to the marriage and your Dad backed you up. There were always children running around and a baby crying for many years when I was growing up. There were nine of us children and we were always moving, Papa being in the Navy. My two oldest brothers were also in the military, Jimmy in the Army and Walter in the Navy. One of my younger sisters also joined the Navy. I’m 73 now, staying single, but I can’t complain my life has been boring. I’m still a practicing Catholic, and religion is an important part of my life. It’s an anchor on a very, very long chain, not a prison.

Something I haven't seen any real reference to is what happens to many of the males. With so many of the high ranking men having lots and lots of wives, the number of single men must be pretty high under the age of about 40. Do the boys have education opportunities?

High ranking men would kick out adolescent boys, there is a documentary about it called Sons of Perdition. Another thing that happened was when Warren Jeffs took over after his father died he would accuse some men of being unfit and kick them out of the community and then “reassign” his wives to himself. I think Warren Jeffs had something like 70 wives when he was arrested. He also “married” many of his father’s wives when his father died.

I'm so happy both of these women are able to live there lives free. I'm curious if they go to church or believe in God. As a personal choice I don't believe in God. I'm spiritual in a way. I believe our souls move to different places when our bodies are no longer useful. I would think after that kind of upbringing a person would want to stay away from any belief system. I grew up with a non practicing Lutheran Mother and my father was atheist so what do I know.

A hope chest isn’t necessarily a bad idea. It depends upon what you put in it! I didn’t have one as it’s not a part of my tradition, but if I had had one, I’d have put a wide variety of things in it over my growing up years. Some traditional things towards home, marriage, and children, yes, but many other items like university supplies, camping and travel stuff, a forest ranger hat, teaching materials, art supplies, medical tools, auto supplies, even supplies to become a sister, (nun), like a Rosary, prayer book, etc.
