In 1997 it won because back in those days it was about the best song winning, in 2022 its all about virtue signalling gesture politics. Sam Ryder should have won this year as it was easily the UK's best entry since Katrina although if you ask me this song is still considerably better.

Why, UK, why? You're the most commercially successful music producing nation in Europe, and you can send in brilliant entries like this one. So why on earth all that drivel of the past years? You don't get nil points because of Brexit (well, maybe a little) but because your songs suck.
@madabbafan
@madabbafan Жыл бұрын
Some of it is because most established acts in the UK won't go near it. The reason - they are already successul and the UK has the second biggest music industry second only to the USA. They don't need the exposure of Eurovision and the risk of not winning is too high for them to risk it. I remember what Bjorn from ABBA once said 'If we had been British or American we would have never have had to resort to Eurovision. But at that time it was really the only way to get noticed outside of Sweden.

They paid their dues as touring and recording musicians for many years leading up to this spectacular moment. Most of the time I watch and enjoy this without getting emotional but sometimes.....there's a few tears owing to the majesty of the performance and the sentiment in the song. More frequently, it gives me goose bumps because it is one of the best performances I will ever see and I love it every time I hear it. I saw KATW twice, once in 1988 and then in 1995, with both performances extremely polished. It came as no surprise that they were able to pull this off so brilliantly to walk away with the crown as the highest scoring act of all time ( I don't know if that has changed as I haven't watched the contest for over 15 years). I hope the band read the comments about them on You Tube so they know how much their fan base appreciates them, as I for one, believe they are one of the most unsung and underrated bands Britain has seen. I am glad to be among those who have been lucky enough to know the value of their music since the mid eighties.

In those days the quality of song writing was better. Nowadays the contest seems to be about the staging, suspect costume and wind machines! All very distracting! The contest would be better if the number of entries in the final was restricted to 10 or 12 then each of those entries performed twice with two different arrangements! That way it's all about the song!

1997: The closest the US will ever come to winning Eurovision. Katrina Leskanich is an American, but spends most of her time based in London. Guitarist Kimberley Rew wrote this; it extended their career a few more years.

You see, UK? It's not politics! Just send songs as good as this with performers as strong as Katrina and you can totally win again! This is one of my favorite Eurovision entries ever and no other British entry comes close. Brilliant song and performance and quite possibly the best orchestral arrangement of any song (Hemel en aarde from the following year is also fantastically-arranged). Also, it was funny seeing Katrina come back to give the British points in 2017 and one of the co-hosts remarked that they were born that year. She looked somewhat bemused. (And then the UK, wisely, gave 12 to Portugal, a testament to how things can change in twenty years: the UK and Ireland struggling for results while Portugal, who got zero points the year Katrina won, walked away with the biggest victory ever seen up to that point - the very achievement Katrina did back in '97!)

Totally deserved winner and a real anthem to World Peace, something we need in early 2022 as much as ever. Incredible vocal performance from Katrina. It's strange that a group that, to be honest, never really made it as a _massive_ act nonetheless had two monster hits: "Love Shine A Light" and 12 years previously, "Walking On Sunshine". You can fluke a single hit, but if you can put out two songs like that in a career, regardless of other success, there's quality there.

One of my favourite bands. They played my university hall of residence at Christmas 1988 and were utterly professional, playing a blistering set. One of the best concerts I have ever seen. I saw them in 1995 at the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden and they were great then too at a time when their career was on a downward trajectory to put it mildly. The 1997 Eurovision win was of Lazarus like proportions and a superb triumph. Everything about it is brilliant from the delivery to the clothes. I also love Katrina's comment about two great victories for Britain in a week, also referring to the election win for Labour. Halcyon days or so it seemed.
