Hi Matt, my tumble dryer was squealing and banging so I got a drum shaft kit and followed your instructions to the letter and a job well done! I had to drill the shaft off the drum and use small bolts to re attach the new one. The bearing was completely worn through and the end of the shaft snapped off as I removed the pin! Gave it a good hoover out and put it back together and now it sounds so sweet! Thanks for posting these very useful videos.

Thanks for this most helpful video. Used it to change the bearing, shaft, seal and wear pads on a Hotpoint. Few differences to the video like a riveted shaft on the original drum but easily drilled out and your video gave me the confidence to have a go and I learned loads - as well and the pride. It was a must-do repair for a family of five with three small children. Cost me £15 for the kit and circa 3 hours of my labour. Saved me the cost of a new dryer or the cost of labour/call-out. Thanks again.

Thank you for a straight forward easily understandable video. Just one question...I have managed to replace the spindle and the bearings, all in working well but, when trying to put the belt back onto the motor, it was very tight (original belt). Got it all back together but the drum is now actually touching the motor, so I can hear a rubbing sound when the dryer is running, which i guess is the drum rubbing against the motor. What have I done wrong?

@eddyjay123 @Serostern Thanks for the comments everyone. We did debate about putting the machine onto its side or the back and working that way. However the instructions that come with the bearing kit from Indesit **specifically** state to remove the door, tilt the machine onto its front and gain access to the bearings from behind. After doing a few dummy runs we could see why they recommended this route; it was simply the best way of replacing the bearings with the least amount of fuss.

Thanks for the video really informative! For anybody replacing the bearing/belt on an Indesit IS60V both side panels need to be removed to enable removal of the rear panel, also note the plastic bottom trim piece and top trim piece containing the control panel also require removal as there are screws located behind that secure the side panels.

Hi On some of the early type of dryers they had an additional copper earth strap that rubs on the shaft pin to earth it. it is quite common for these to squeal simply remove if fitted to prove if this is the source of your issue. Failing that it could be the motor. If so that would need replacing. Thanks.

Thanks for this.i cant believe how badly these things are designed,surely a roller bearing would eliminate this problem.

I'm doing this to my condensing dryer. I'm hoping to just loosen the back off and change the spindle and collar only by unscrewing the spindle from inside the drum while the belt is still attached. I have already changed the belt tension wheel and I did it from underneath cutting away some of the plastic vent lol. It would of been so easy to just take the side off now after watching this guide, but I struggled for hours trying to do it (the wrong way). Great guide! Thanks!

D Scooo Halve the problem with any repair is knowing how to get in access the part.With our extensive library even some professional engineers will check out our videos before tackling a unfamiliar repair. We would recommend lifting the drum out as although it may look like extra work it will be easier than struggling with the belt trying to pull it down. Good luck which ever way you tackle it. :-)

My indesit dryer shaft has completely sheared off and I'd like to replace it myself, but I'm curious about the bearing pads and seals. Are they necessary to replace? One other question, the shearing of the shaft appears to have done some minor damage to the hole it fits through on the rear of the dryer, cutting a small V shape below the hole. With the shaft fitting through the hole and then a collar, do you think that would be a problem? I can provide a picture, but it looks a little like this shape now O> (but vertical with the v at the bottom)

Great video presentation. I have the Hotpoint VTD00 model and had a lot of problems trying to stop the drum loading the front cover bearings too heavily, which causes major noise and eventually snaps the drive belt. The bearing kit is the same on mine but the phosphor bronze bearing in the back cover is square and sits into a housing that is pop riveted to the rear cover. Having fitted the kit when loaded with cloths the drum seriously rubs against the front cover bearings and can stop the drum turning. I found that welding a 5 mm plate to the rear cover and disregarding the washer worked for about 13 months or so before it finally failed again, the problem as I see it that the plain bearing rotating in a metal washer will fail eventually as will the phosphor bronze bush. Ideally a roller bearing arrangement on the rear of the drum/back cover would be a better design in my opinion, and I don't think 6kg drum load is excessive amount of cloths.
@eSpares10 жыл бұрын
Hi David, these are very commonly warring parts on your range of dryers. One of the most common causes of the drum rubbing or catching is if the floor is not 'square' and the cabinet twists slightly. If it starts rubbing try packing up one foot at either side with a cup coaster and if this stops leave it in that position.
@davidgreen750110 жыл бұрын
Thanks eSpares I'll try it and let you know.

Thanks for this, it was a big help. Just one thing, when I went to remove the spline that bolts on from inside the drum I found mine was riveted on and not screwed. I have drilled out the rivets from the back and can then fit the new spline like yours as the holes are still in the right place. I probably will need to shorten the bolts though but it all looks like it will be OK.
@sparkyuiop10 жыл бұрын
***** Yep that worked fine, I just 'Dremelled' the bolts excess off the other side so that they were well below the cover. I also greased up the spline a bit which I assume has helped as it makes no horrible noises! Well £27 bought me a new heater element and a bearing kit and with the help of this video saved me around a tonne for a new dryer! Thanks eSpares!

Hi I have a hoover hd vision tumble dryer. It makes a dreadful sound which could be the belt or bearings, like you say, But what is immediately obvious is the blower wheel /air intake fan (whatever it is called) is pulled to one side towards the drum. the drum itself does not seem to have any movement, but this may be because it has roller wheels where it attaches to the front, I have read that there should be a spring that counters the belt on the wheel. What do you suggest? Thank you

Frances /Dublin ireland
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
Hi Frances, thanks for the comments. The belt on your dryer pulls the drum firmly down so you will not feel any movement. Look at the rear bearing by taking the bearing cover off. As the bearing wears the shaft wears through turning the round hole oval and eventually the shaft is cut on the rear panel. If only the bearing is worn replace that but do check the shaft for signs of damage and replace if any damage found.
@610Frances8 жыл бұрын
Hello , im feeling very proud of my self thanks too your really helpful step by step videos i was able to replace the shaft and take off rivets to put on the new shaft i sanded where the rivets came off and i put new back bearings on also ... i hope i havent to replace the back bearings again as the one i took only lasted 8 months , HOW LONG DOES THE BACK BEARING MENT TO LAST ?
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
Well done Frances, not an easy repair. The rear bearings on these models are a common part to wear and I often replaced two or three a week when on the field (probably 20% of all repairs on these machines). Interestingly some machines would last for years and others less than 12 months. This could be partially due to load size and frequency of use and wear may be increased when running 'multiple' loads one after another. If you are a 'heavy' user you may consider a 'stronger' machine as the additional expense may be a wise investment.
@davidhattersley50456 жыл бұрын
Question. Could you put some grease on the bearing to slow the wear down ? Cheers.

+daz sam white nights seam to have a better set up than this bought one 2 year ago and does not have the same bearing or shaft so hopefully lasts longer
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
+daz sam Sorry we seem to have missed your post, If the rear bearing is worn the shaft hole in the bearing will become oval and may even eventually wear through and cut the shaft on the steel back plate. The front of the drum rests on bearing pads and around a felt covered support so there is a little movement hear but that is not normally a problem. Excess wear on the felt will lead to a lot of lint inside the cabinet.

+Andypppppppppp bad design to get money off people rather than making a quality product iv got a 25 year old washer and dryer both still doing there jobs lol. Basics bud are the bush is made of a soft metal and their is always down force on the shaft from a tight belt if you ran it empty it would still do the same but take a bit longer than being full. a tip to get you buy is to turn the bush upside down drill a new hole for a self tapping screw and you got more use before stripping it completely iv done this and got month out of it
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
+Andypppppppppp Interesting one this, most engineers would look at this bearing and conclude it is not the best solution and I have personally replaced many for exactly the same problem. However I have also been to repair 5 to 10 year old dryers that have not worn through the bearing. It may be down to the amount of work the dryer does and when hot for a long time from several loads it is possible the bearing wears quicker. Sorry that we can only supply the same type of bearing but we cannot offer a modification for this problem. The only suggestion is if you are a heavy user you check/replace the bearing regularly as it is easy to do.

good video, however please bear in mind a couple of points: This is a brand new machine he is stripping down so everything is easy to undo and strip down. try doing this on a machine that is 5 years old! Also it is near impossible to get the pin in the new shaft!
@eSpares9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Trigg Thanks for the comments. Unlike working on a car the screws do not generally corrode so do not generally give much problems on dryers. The pin for fixing the bearing collar can usually be cut to remove as there should be a new one in the shaft kit. If having difficulty refitting the pin make sure you turn the hole until it is vertical and pushing the centre of the drum towards the back of the machine to give a little extra clearance from the bearing will also make fitting easier,

Ive repaired mine a number of times now. Dont you think this is a rubbish design though. It seems to me that tumble dryers are designed to fail. Those bearings are not even a bearing. its simply metal grinding against metal until it grinds its way into the case. and as for those plastic supports and felt sticky seals. DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED.!! I can strip my machine down and do the lot in less than an hour but these machines are RUBBISH. Its little wonder so many catch fire !!

Thanks for the comments Dave. I have personally repaired many of these machines for this problem. In my experience these dryers are great for low to medium use but larger families wear them out too quick. For heavier users Bosch and LG machines last a lot longer.

Yes. Ive ended up drilling out the square bearing housing and Ive fitted a thick metal bracket on the back of my machine. It now has TWO of the tear drop type bearings fitted back to back instead of the single square one. Ive left the cover off so I can easily keep an eye on it and give it a tiny squirt of WD40 every few months. Seems to be working well so far. I dont know why they didnt fit a REAL bearing on the back of these machines though.

To answer the statements how unbelievably poor appliances are designed, they are designed to fail soon after the warranty expires. This ensures an income stream through parts sales long after the purchase. Of course, the more ignorant we are, the higher their after sales income/profit.
