Kanye's exact words were as follows: "when you hear about slavery for 400 years that sound like a choice... it's like we're mentally imprisoned. I like the word "prison" better cause "slavery" goes too direct to the idea of blacks... prison is something that unites us as one race... the human race." He then later said, "the reason why I brought up the 400 years point is because we can't be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years." Kanye was talking about mental slavery in the present day being a choice not actual slavery. It's not like actual slavery has been around for 400 years in the US. Actual slavery was abolished in 1863, 244 years after the first slaves came over to America in 1619. Kanye is saying however that mental slavery has lasted past the Emancipation Proclamation into 2018. It has been almost 400 years since the first slaves came over to America (2018-1619=399 years) and many of us are still mentally imprisoned. He thinks this is a choice. This is all that Kanye was trying to say.

A slave when first captured by gun point has no choice but to cooperate or die. After a while the slave has a natural right to rise up against the master and launch a counter ambush. The nature of human kind is to rise up, break their chains, and desecrate their enslaver. Harriet Tubman achieved this through escape and evasion. Frederick Douglas accomplished this by physical beating his slave master and escaping to a better life. Remaining on the plantation, singing to white Jesus, and forgiving the slave master is another choice. I do believe this is what Kanye was talking about. The earthbound black person is the only people walking the planet that are compelled to forgive, pray for, and unconditionally love another race that has done them so much harm.

Ok. So now us black are going to debate each other on a subject 150 years old about whose perspective is right...this is weird and a waste of time... They (people who were slaves) had no choice. Instead of yelling let's start leading.

In reality, what Kanye said makes perfect sense. Watch the whole interview - his comment about slavery is being taken completely out of context. Kanye is starting to realize that he’s an individual and that he’s no longer going to be trapped in a group think of people that think they are victims. He’s imploring his black brothers to free themselves of the shackles of the past. He’s trying to improve the black community by being a leader.

The problem with Stephen A Smith and the people that have commented so far is that they don't see the big picture of what Kanye is talking about. Listen to the man and throw your bias out the window for a moment. He describes how Donald Trump has been very popular in the rap community, hence the inclusion of his name in several songs by several artists over the years. Why is this important? As soon as Trump started running for president, the tone has changed. Democrats convinced black voters that Trump was not their guy. In fact, they consistently run a "we are going to help minorities" campaign while slandering the other side to be a racist party. All the while, they do nothing to help black communities. They give minorities empty promise after empty promise during elections. Yet you still vote for them. Aren't they tired of being looked at as nothing more than votes by the left? Kanye is sick and tired of black people being looked at as victims, which politicians have been exploiting for years. He wants black people to free themselves from their past. He doesn't want black kids growing up thinking everyone is out to get them. Most of all, I don't think he wants them to believe that some politicians are going to fix their problems when they are not to be trusted. When Kanye says 400 years of slavery sounds like a choice, he does not mean this literally. He preaches freedom of thought, and is met with contempt by the very people he is trying to reach. Its a shame.

Donald Alexander What are you talking about. The whole point of my comment was how they wanted to talk about something that had nothing to do with sports. The only person involved in sports in this topic is Kap and he's nowhere near playing for the NFL and barely talked about in this segment.

Dominique Robinson Well the fact is, we need to talk about it in all segments of life. If you're white, you might not think so, and that's the problem.

I'm a black man living in the Netherlands with both parents being born in the Caribbean. I find West's comments despicable and shameful. However as black people we are all different. Given any topic you will find a whole range of opinions. Given just about anything you will find people who excel and others who do not and so on. We are not a monolith, we are not all the same. Sometimes I think black America jumps down the throat of people who do not follow the party line enthusiastically as in this case. I say, let Kanye West be the complete idiot he is and don't get so hyped up about it.

The earthbound black man is the only individual walking the earth who proudly prays for the forgiveness and love to the people that oppresses him. Rising up and striking down your oppressor is natural, loving him for 400 years is not.

ESPN suspending Stephen A. Smith for a week because of his comments about domestic abuse suggesting women should make sure that they don’t do anything to provoke an attack. Is this the guy who is supposed to tell people what to say stfu Stephen why not stick to sports you would still be wrong but it’s at least what job is about.
@Twinn07096 жыл бұрын
Yeah but he was correct to say women should not strike men. Everybody should keep their hands to themselves. Just because a woman may not be able to render a man unconscious does not mean she should be afford the choice to punch or slap him. But you're also correct because there are times he [Stephen A.] puts his foot in his mouth ... more times than not actually.

Ruben Perez, Kanye was way off base. First and far most, if you done the real history of slavery, in America; you will find out, that slaves were bought to America by Whites and Spaniards and a rational person, that is inform, would know, that it was not those Africans choice, to be slaves of their captives. If, Kanye is going to speak, for blacks, then he needs, to be inform before he elaborate on topics, that he knows nothing about. Kanye, could not have said, that the Holocaust were those Jews choice, of what happened, to them, without expected an backlash because that statement Kanye made, would not have been, an accurate account. See, Ruben Perez, we had ancestors, that was bought, to this country America and we still have to face, the systemic race system of white supremacy, in America and when we chastise our own race, for making light of Slavery of Af- ricans, in America, their ancestors being oppress by a Systemic Racial System of Jim Crow and continue Systemic Racial System of White Nationalism and oppression, on a large scale; we have every right, to chastise our own race of people, if he or she, is misinforming the people.
