Who cares what Kanye ‘really meant’... he said some shit that can be used to desensitize slavery and if that’s not what he meant, he should choose his words better... If he was talking about mental slavery, he could’ve described it way better without using actual slavery as reference... I see why he needs ghostwriters smh

slimreaper14 I agree. Kanye even said in the beginning of the TMZ interview, that he will probably mess this up....(paraphrasing) and proceeded to make his now infamous comments.

Pimple Popper I’m black and close to 60 years of age. My father was a former Black Panther and still very militant to this day. He’s 85 and fully understood what Kayne was trying to say. My father knew Malcolm X personally, and he said brother Malcolm would agree with Kanye’s statement. Even the white man said “Give me liberty or give me death”...it’s 2018 and we still suffer from a slaves mentality.

MY Bembery ...Kanye is an artist, and what he said wasn’t new. It’s 2018 and we the black family are still under the thumb of white supremacy. Instead of listening with our brains, we listen with our ears. If Malcolm X were alive today he would agree with Kanye’s statement.
@dubdeuce1517

Do you really know who your ancestors are? It was written that if our ancestors did not follow all of God's commandments and statutes that we would be taken into another land by ship and sold to our enemies. That our enemies would begin to lord over us, and no man would be able to save us. One brother's eye would be evil toward another. A man would leave his children. Seems like all of this did come to pass. And it was our choice all along. There is a reason they didn't want us to be able to read during slavery. They didn't want us to read the bible and find our true identity. That's why they came up with white Jesus. Kanye is right. Niggas continue to grope at noonday as the blind grope in darkness. We the walking dead out here.

Petty Wap let me reiterate... When people listen to somebody speak, especially a public figure such as Kanye, people usually form in 3 groups of opinions. Agree, disagree, then the misinformed. If he says anything you agree with, you're going to defend the opinion as well because you also agree. I don't think anybody is idolizing the celebrities, more so looking for public leadership

If you arent a minority there is a slim chance you will understand why DL speak of race the way he does. I see denial of race being a present issue in the comments section, I dont find that to be a suprise. People have to learn that if they cant relate to the subject at hand usually means your opinion is invalid. Everyone has platform to speak their mind whether they are a genius or mentally unstable. Education is key not word of mouth or opinion. Find validity through research otherwise you will always fall prey to misinformation. Kanye was wrong.

Hella people on here saying “Kanye went way over D.L.’s head/listen to the entire interview”. Kanye West did not go over anybody’s head- the statements he made were dumb and incredibly shallow. No matter how much people try to add greater depth to Kanye’s comment, the truth is that they were the self serving words of a narcissist.

This is still a topic lol why do famous black ppl not know history? How can anyone say I get what you were tryna say, but still be like fuck You for not wording it right? .. I’ve been waitin a couple months to see the negative impact.. I don’t see the problems with fostering the idea of choices and power to younger generations instead making excuses and willingly giving them a crutch.. like oh it’s ok to stay in the hood cuz that’s how the system is. It’s like y’all would rather preserve slave history to respect ancestors vs writing a new future for generations to come.. loyalty in black culture is an unfair double edge sword.

Being captured and sold into slavery wasnt a choice. But at some point every slave had a choice to fight back, run or remain obedient. Nat Turner chose to fight. I understand this is a sensitive subject but a "choice" is a powerful action that God has given us. We can continue to remain as sheep or to buck the system. I also understand that slaves had various degrees of treatment and circumstances as we do today. But by any means necessary if you are willing to risk your family lives, your freedom, livelihood to escape or kill to make your life better then it's a "choice" Weigh the options along with the consequences and that's how choose your course. That goes for 400 years ago and especially current times.

Slaves got paid for their labor. What money were they using to "BUY" their freedom? People associate slavery with the South but forget to mention slavery also existed up North. Who were the slaves in the Northern States? If you ever called your employer "BOSS", you're basically calling him or her "master", because the word boss originated from the word 'baas' which means master in Dutch. If you ever worked in customer service at a fast food restaurant, you may have repeated the following "How may I serve you today?" To serve someone is to basically be a slave by the original definition.

How can an intelligent man not understand the context of the statement? EVERYTHING in life is a choice, even if it means death.

He gotta take the comedic relief out of his messages seriously because I don’t want nobody acting like they don’t understand his message... or they didn’t know he was being serious in his soliloquy

less than chattel, the law viewed them as personal property, like furniture pieces. Pre-civil war state supreme court cases made them not human as a matter of law.

So many of y'all are putting words in Kanye's mouth and making it seem like he explained his point as well as you guys are explaining his point. He did a terrible job at conveying his message, and it's perfectly logical as to why people have reacted they have. He shouldn't have said "slavery", he should've chosen a better word or composed a more thoughtful sentence to relay his message. Today, yes, a lot of us can choose to be imprisoned (mentally/physically) by the system, but in terms of actual slavery, the only choices available were death and hope, and we should be grateful that most of the slaves chose hope.

This whole argument rest on the false assumption that slaves and freemen did not constantly fight back. People consistently fought for freedom from the very beginning of slavery.
