I also understand that slaves had various degrees of treatment and circumstances as we do today. Who were the slaves in the Northern States? If you ever called your employer "BOSS", you're basically calling him or her "master", because the word boss originated from the word 'baas' which means master in Dutch. If you ever worked in customer service at a fast food restaurant, you may have repeated the following "How may I serve you today?"
