There are many substances that are illegal to use but that varies from organizations and countries. It’s a very long list and while yes you are hiring a top physio and therapist, things can go wrong like in this case through contamination. I believe a better question would be why wasn’t his physio using gloves?

The fitness trainer was actually a pharmacist and should've known better. But he also claimed to have told the physio what was in the substance so he wouldn't use it around Sinner. The physio claims he was never told. They were both at fault. They're both gone, too.

I actually saw the change in Jannik just before the olympics. Tonsillitis often happens to people with weakened immune system. I was a bit worried that the strain of being no.1 was getting to him. He looked stressed to me. And the reaction when he beat Zverev was not typical. Like a scream of relief and anger combined. Biggest difference is that Yannik and his team seem to have had an immediate and logical explanation for how it was an accident (on all parts). Also, the drug is common in Italy and the amount found was deemed unable to enhance performance. Halep did not have (and still does not have) an explanation other than "oops, my bad!", the drug found is NOT common, and the amount was significant.

So they had to wait for the conclusion of the investigation/have a verdict before revealing the name of the player. This helps the investigation to be impartial

Sharapova and Halep were suspended for over a year before they won their appeals and were found innocent. Look at Troicki, Gasquet, and Cilic. That is unacceptable and the fact that they brushed it under the rug is very sketchy. The president of the ATP also being Italian doesn’t help the look of this favoritism.

These comments are all well and good. I raise the issue again, however, about the double standard here. Simona Halep was banned for more than a year and she claimed too that she knew nothing of ingesting a banned substance. She wasn't given the same treatment. Cahill was also Halep's coach. Don't know whether that was the case at the time of her ban. It's the double standard that is egregious. Cahill just stated that Halep's situation was also not fair but even more unfair as she was banned from playing for an extended period of time unlike Sinner.

@@susanantakikhan3262 What I've read about Halep's case is that the delay was caused initially because she and her team (her coach was Patrick Mouratoglou) seemingly could not work out how the banned substance got into her system, whereas with Sinner, his technical coach Umberto (not his physio Giacomo) was also a pharmacist so he knows about banned substances, but he was also the person who gave the can containing trace amounts of the banned substance to the physio for his finger cut, so that is gross negligence if not worse. They all knew immediately where the substance originated. That of course doesn't make it right and Sinner was right to part ways with them because they really tarnished his reputation. In Simona's case, luckily, like Sinner, she had the funds to hire good lawyers, but it took some time to work out that it was her collagen supplement that had been contaminated with the banned substance. Darren Cahill was not her coach at the time. In fact, he vouched for the integrity of her character because he had been her coach previously, and he knew how seriously she took what she put in her body as an athlete. Finally, at her trial, Mouratoglou admitted he had been at fault in handing her the contaminated collagen, which resulted in her FOUR YEAR ban being reduced to 9 months, but her career has been pretty much derailed in the last 2 years because of this. Djokovic spoke about Sinner's case and he said part of the reason of establishing a players union (PTPA) was to standardise what happens to ALL players when something like this occurs. At the moment I agree it's not a level playing field. Even if the ITIA couldn't find the origin of the banned substance, they chose to convict Halep without all the evidence. Definite double standards.

The difference between Halep and Sinner's case is that in his case his team knew immediately how the contamination occurred. Halep's case was more complex in that there was a pharmacy involved who made up her collagen supplement. I believe she is suing them? But yes, the fact Sinner wasn't suspended at all while the investigation took place is not fair at all. I believe both Sinner and Halep are victims of decisions their teams made. I feel really sorry for tennis players who can't afford expensive lawyers to clear their names.

And from the time of his practice there, multiple reports from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the NADO suggested that some top Italian players had been negatively affected by Clostebol. Giacomo Naldi was therefore alerted, warned of the risks of contamination from using this type of product. It is unlikely that he was unaware of the consequences he could have had for Jannik by obtaining this spray. The thesis of negligence thus casts a certain shadow on his case. I think Sinner's theory is plausible. Furthermore, I don't consider this guy to be a 'cheater'. He's a sincere human being, a devoted sportsman and in the tennis game for the long run. He wants to become the next legend alongside Alcaraz, Rune and Medvedev. I believe he would never jeopardize his career by deliberately using banned substances. That's simply not the guy he is. Even more so, the level of this anabolic steroid in his blood was so low, he didn't even benefit from it. Zero. I have been Jannik’s fan for many years. I was shocked to hear this news at first. But after reading all the matters and listened to Darren, it cleared to me that Jannik was innocent. the bottom line is that they DO have different rules for different players. Shapo said it after this story broke. A former player named Rochus, from Belgium also said after he retired that they test different players differently, some with more frequency than others, etc. Henin tested positive and they covered it up because tennis’ gatekeepers would do anything to keep Serena from dominating(sorry gatekeepers, she STILL dominated). After Henin tested positive, the story was never leaked and she retired. Her temporary retirement lasted the exact amount of time that you’re suspended for a 1st drug offense. Coincidence? I think not. Gasquet tested positive for cocaine and he said that he kissed a girl and that she must’ve had coke on her lips. They let him off. This lame excuse that the spray on his physio’s finger and that THAT was enough to get into Sinner’s urine sample? Really? i said i was born AT NIGHT, not LAST NIGHT.

Exact same situation as Jannik, Marco was investigated till March this year, during the investigation, he was NOT SUSPENDED and played couple of challenger tourneys. ITIA finished the investigation in March and Marco was found innocent. Thus NO BAN, just points deduction and fine as of Jannik’s case. If the governing body does the same thing and follows the same procedure to lower ranked players like Marco (102 CH ranking in doubles), and higher ranked players like Jannik, they are doing the right thing

Clostebol is a banned steroid that gives you muscle mass and side effects include vomiting and bone pain. Sinner gained some muscle in the past year (many people talked about that) and all of a sudden he started winning against players he always lost to. He has hip pain and vomited on the court, and was scared to go to the Olympics as their testing protocols are very strict. I think it is perfect acceptable to have questions regarding fairness of treatment. Cahill makes a reasonable case, but that doesn't mean there aren't more questions to be answered. If it is true that the test revealed such a small amount of substance that it could not have been performance enhancing maybe these questions all have simple and honest answers. But it is precisely because it has happened "without us even knowing" that people have questions and doubts that they want to share and discuss.

All these governing bodies ATP, ITF, ITIA all failed in leading. These organizations are the CEOs and everyone looks to them for leadership, transparency, communication, morale, etc. Similar to the commissioner of the NBA. During times of crisis, these leaders need to step up, speak up and provide answers. We don’t even know who these people are. When David Stern was NBA commissioner we felt like we knew who was in charge. Same w Adam Silver. It’s amazing we never hear from the ATP president. Or the ITF or ITIA or WTA. Good god. Of course Jannik did nothing wrong but if you knew anything about the media you would know that if he tweeted this or shared on any platform he would be under extreme scrutiny like he is now. That would’ve had an even worse toll on him. Imagine, you are world number 1 and have been tested positive for doping. You know it’s an accident and an investigation is underway. But on twitter (probably most toxic community in existence) people are sending you thousands of hate messages a day, you are being judged by other players and constantly asked for interviews about the situation. After the appeal, they couldn’t reveal it as the investigation is done anonymously, ie the the committee investigating the issue didn’t know the name of the player. So they had to wait for the conclusion of the investigation/have a verdict before revealing the name of the player. This helps the investigation to be impartial

The strength coach was also a pharmacist. It was probably up to him to keep track of things. However, he's the one who gave the drug to the physio. Sinner probably though a pharmacist would be more meticulous. That's why he hired him.
