But why would Klay be disappointed? I mean, despite his significant injury in 2019, GSW showed faith in him by offering him a five-year, $190 million max contract, even though they knew he couldn't play a whole season the following year and had no assurance he'd be the same again. It turned out he got injured again the following year and missed another whole season, not playing for two seasons, yet the team still respected him and offered their support.To be fair, Klay doesn't necessarily deserve a max contract right now. I mean, he deserves it because he's part of the core, but how he played last season was clearly a sign not to give him the max at this time. He knows it, and the team knows it-they are the most expensive team in the NBA, yet they didn't make it to the playoffs, which is absurd. The team needs more help in scoring, and they need more cap space to do it. The team supported him during his downfall, and now they need him to accept that this is the reality-they're struggling, he's struggling, and he's not the same anymore due to that worst injury of his.If I were the GM, I would also think twice-unless they don't want to win another championship. Klay's options depend on what his priorities are and how he views it at this moment. Options when they're declined, they don't count against the cap. But Chris Paul is over 35, teams can waive over 35 year olds with no cap penalty.
