He went to the western conference finals with an older Billups and weaker players at every position then the Pistons had back in those days. Coaches would have noticed that in practice and worked him into the gameplan as far as touches. He wouldnt have been a 20pt scorer immediately but he would still make all star teams and such. I don’t know why people don’t talk about this more often, this has to be up there in terms of “what if” scenarios in NBA history. Melo going to Detroit would’ve changed the History of the NBA, if it happened who knows if LeBron goes to Miami or if KG goes to Boston, or Shaq to Miami. This would’ve been a huge domino effect, the possibilities are endless.

Apart from what others have said, I’d add that you’re looking at this with 20/20 hindsight bias. We know now, obviously, that Detroit beat the lakers. But nobody knew that back in 2003-2004. Remember, this is when Kobe and Shaq was joined by the glove and the mailman. People expected them to win it all, not the Detroit Pistons. So if Detroit (the underdogs) beat the lakers after drafting Carmelo, the whole story would be different. It might very well still be known as a defensive juggernaut team, but part of the spotlight will inevitably go to Carmelo for his offensive prowess.

Yeah and people forget how good Melo was in Denver. They went from one of the worst teams in the league to making the playoffs every year and he was one of the best offensive players in the league.
