Apart from what others have said, I’d add that you’re looking at this with 20/20 hindsight bias. We know now, obviously, that Detroit beat the lakers. But nobody knew that back in 2003-2004. Remember, this is when Kobe and Shaq was joined by the glove and the mailman. People expected them to win it all, not the Detroit Pistons. So if Detroit (the underdogs) beat the lakers after drafting Carmelo, the whole story would be different. It might very well still be known as a defensive juggernaut team, but part of the spotlight will inevitably go to Carmelo for his offensive prowess.

Melo wanted to be traded there in Feb instead of signing the next season. So they lost Gallinari, Chandler and Felton in the deal. That's three top 8 rotation guys cause Melo was selfish -- as per usual.

Larry.Brown.Doesnt.Play.Young.Players. I dont understand why people think he would have completely changed his personality because he was on a great team that he never got playing time for. More than likely he would have complained about getting no on-court time and demanded a trade during the second season
