Paul, Notre Dame SHOULD have won the title in 1992-93 when they beat #1 Florida State, and finished the season #2 behind Florida State. And no, Notre Dame has not been dominant lately, but everyone knows they are the most storied program in all of college football. Alabama is the most dominant program since 2006, no question.... Notre Dame was the most dominant team for the entire 20th Century man... 100 years of dominance.

Paul Finebaum doesn't really believe what he's saying about the sport NOT being different if Notre Dame wins it all. That or he really does believe it because he has sheltered himself within the SEC bunker echo chamber. The fact that they actually let Paul Finebaum have that point and gave it legitimacy by discussing it is ridiculous. The response should have been: "Paul, your disgust for Notre Dame is clear and obvious. There's no circumstance in which Notre Dame wins the CFP and there is not a massive wave of effect that courses through all of college football, even transcending college football. The ACC pays Notre Dame a ton of money to play an average of 5 ACC opponents in football every season. It's an average of 5 because they can play 4, so long as there is a corresponding season with 6. That's money Notre Dame gets in addition to their NBC contract, in addition to money from other networks airing Notre Dame road games, in addition to the money they get from the CFP. The ACC wouldn't be paying that kind of money to Notre Dame for a handful of games, if it weren't getting something big in return.

Finebaum, bringing up Tim Brown despite the fact he had graduated and did not play on the 1988 Notre Dame National Championship team. Stephen A., asking - but not wanting any answer - as to how Notre Dame commanded a network deal of their own. In 1991 (not "forty-years ago," but 33), television was evolving. Cable TV came to be, and ABC/ESPN attempted to monopolize college football. Only after they had every conference and NCAA member institution's signature on a contract did they then approach Notre Dame, to strong-arm the Irish into signing. Valuing the ability to play a national schedule ALWAYS, Notre Dame did not accept the regionalization of broadcasts that would follow and looked out for their national fan-base by crafting a deal with NBC, that network's response to the market monopoly attempt by ABC/ESPN. Finebaum - whose appearance on this network baffles many - accuses ND of "arrogance" for doing what is the right of EVERY program: looking out for their own best self-interests. The Irish have been independent for 136 seasons (ACC/Covid season aside) and are entitled to make decisions on their own behalf. It has NOTHING to do with some made-up notion of arrogance and "thinking they are better than others." Every program in college football - which is NOT "conference football" - can make a similar decision if it's best for their program. Irish fans couldn't care less about Finebaum's opinion, a known SEC apologist.

As a Miami fan, I loathe ND. That being said I remember the days as a independent and I loved the national schedule. You look back at some of those games and we played everyone. Michigan, Auburn, Big 8, Pac 10, Big 10. That tv contract PLUS Notre Dame having a "in" into the playoffs, sans conference affiliation is genius on their part, but also BS. They kept the entire $14MM from the last game, whereas the others had to split with their conference. Good for them, but they have different rules and they make more money in the same tournament.

The argument about ND winning it being the best thing confuses me. Penn State isn’t in the same position as Texas in terms of “having won it;” Penn State hasn’t won since 1988, the year BEFORE ND’s last championship. Yeah, ND is the most historic program of the four and it’d be awesome to see them win it all again after 35 years, but you can’t argue that PSU and UT are in the same situation as each other as the reason why

ND also beat Florida St in 1993 that clearly proved ND was the better team, yet the media wanted to "git ol Bobby his title" so they pretended the Game of the Century was never even played.

Also, altho PS winning it all would for sure be a huge story, I don’t think it’s arguable that they have AS big of a national fan base as ND. Either way, one of them will play for it, which is fun. @AndTheRoadGoesEverOn I was AT the 1988 NC Fiesta Bowl when they demolished unbeaten West Virginia. I was at the 1988 season opener last second W over Michigan. Most importantly, I was AT the legendary CATHOLICS VS CONVICTS victory over #1 Miami in Oct 1988. Etc. I've got my ticket stubs. I know what year they were. Just because the BOWLS occur usually the 1st day of the New Year doesn't mean they won the 1989 NC. The won the 1988 season NC. It's amazing how many people don't understand this.
