I have ALWAYS said this, especially around that time when Argentina was in total shambles and people were comparing him to Maradona, saying he doesn't have enough fight in him. Messi doesn't believe in winning "at all cost". If the price is cheating the game, it seems he would rather just do his best within the rules and lose. He has always worked hard. Sometimes we saw the pressure get the best of him but he has always put in work, both for club and country. I think because of his astronomical numbers for Barcelona we forget that he is human and needs a TEAM that will work with him (like ANY OTHER PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME). For too long, Argentina expected him to do it all and that just doesn't work in football. Finally he got a supporting group that were determined to bleed for him and for the honor of Argentina. I don't think any other player has come under as much pressure in the history of the game, and no other player has ever played as consistently at this level for as long as he has, shattering all kinds of records. Messi made all of this look easy, while staying humble, never claiming to be the best and playing almost completely clean. He has won every individual and collective trophy there is to win, 1200+ goals and assists, 7 Ballon d'Ors, 6 golden boots, 4 best playmaker awards, numerous records, successfully competing with the best players since he was 18 and now him being 35 he is competing with the best players of the upcoming generation. The consistency is unmatched - even CR7 could not keep up such tempo for that long. Additionally, you can say that passes, goals, dribbles, chance creating, vision, technique, set-pieces, leadership, etc - it is all there. He is the goat in my book.

Then Barcelona came to back to it's best at the start of 2015 and remained as the best club in the world till 2016 . Decline started from the 2017/18 season , as you rightly said . We will look back at this argentina squad and realise how amazing messi was. There are 3 or 4 players in that squad that were stand out - Di Maria, Messi, mcallister and alvarez. You can argue emi martinez too. But two of those guys are mid 30s and led the team. Messi and di maria dragged that team through as icons to inspire the team. We will look back and compare this tournament to Argentina 86. Messi was key in bringing a decent team to world level. It was unreal.

I sometimes ask ourselves, do we really understand how absurd Messi’s career is? 30 years from now, people will look at his career and say, it’s impossible. He has 7 ballon d’ors (could easily be 8) Scored 91 goals in a year 74 goals in a season. He will retire, with most Goals+assists ever. Has most goals+assist in World Cup history. Forget being the top scorer and top assist provider in Barca, and La liga history. He would end up with the most trophies ever and would have won every competition he has ever played in. Then, he was part of footballs greatest individual rivalry ever, against Ronaldo who is easily top 5 all time, and still overcame it. Above all, you will watch his games on KZbin and he will pass the eye test. You won’t watch a highlights of another player and say, he was better than Messi, impossible. Yes Maradona was amazing, and on talent he’s the one of the greatest, but what Messi will have over him, over time is the records and the accolades that will live on. The people who watched Messi will die, and his records will continue to stand and blow peoples mind. Some of these records will be untouchable. Ain’t no one winning 7 or possibly 8 ballon dors anytime soon

I just want to add one thing Messi’s game is everything from controlling the ball, the rhythm, dribbling, passing, setting pieces, free kicks, and shooting with high accuracy like in a play station game. He easily jump in the top of every attacking categories of the game with more than 30% MVP. It is really impossible. I watch his full games during Barca days then come to highlights and ask myself how his highlights can take about 8-10’? How he can do that every games? How he can do something we cannot imagine or we need time to analyze? Sorry i wanted to add one thing but listed too much 😅 In general, it is impossible to see someone like him!
