hi, im from Mexico and watched the game with my lil son from here in Mex, we are huge fans of english football, but when i saw Rashford and Sancho going in during the extra time, i told my son, England is going to lose. why my son asked?, i told him that back in the day when i used to play, our coach told us that it is bad to bring in guys just to kick the penalties, because they are not in rithm with the match, they didnt get enough time to "sweat" the adrenaline of going in a game like that, so in my opinion regardless of their age, the mistake was to bring them in soooo late, he should have stuck with players with more minutes in the game..... just an opinion.... take care!

C-Burley is spot on... England's attacking players were shackled by SG's tactics... Yes, he's worked wonders in terms of unifying the squad and getting them singing off the same Hymm sheet; engaging with the media etc... However, SG has been blessed with a crop of incredible offensive players, possibly the best in our history, which - at present - are in danger of going to waste. If we're not careful, England will be the next Belgium.
@ivo74183 жыл бұрын
SG's tactic is not your problem. Problem is that when it comes to it, England players bottle it and also are just not good under pressure compared to other teams. If you had gone attacking, Italy would have executed the "park the bus and then counter attack" and would have still scored. Then you would be going, why SG tried attacking, should have parked the bus. Truth is, when it comes to pressure, England players are just not good enough when it really matters.

@@annemariegutteridge4696 It doesn’t matter. Grealish would have helped defend by giving us an out ball in midfield. Rice / Philips can’t do that the way Grealish can. That’s worth a lot to a team trying to defend a lead. There’s more to defending that just tackling. England’s problem was that the ball just kept coming back again and again and there was no respite or counter attack. The equaliser became inevitable , and I will say one last thing. If Grealish helped us score another goal then that’s good defending too. Last time I got my calculator out it was much easier defending a 2-0 lead than a 1-0 lead. Or am I missing something? The problem with these pundits is that they're resigned to "soccer" matches going the way they've gone for the past 50 years. The rules need to change if this sport is going to progress. There's pros and cons to the golden goal scenario but the pros outweigh the cons. In any case, too many international matches go to penalties under the rules as they are. I'm of a mind of reducing the size of the pitch, first of all, and then reducing the size of the squads to 9 v 9 in the first period of Extra Time and then 7 v 7 in the second phase before resorting to a penalty shootout. I'd also enlarge the size of the goal to a ten foot crossbar. Am I completely crazy?

ESPN are the only pundits not giving Southgate a pass and I commend them. Southgate completely butchered this final. From the starting 11, to the team's mentality, to his unwillingness to adjust, to his late substitutions, to his penalty choices. Just horrid. And yes I know England scored in part because of the width created from the 2 wing back set up but you saw what happened after Italy settled in around the 20th minute or so. They just completely dominated. Because England didn't have enough quality on the pitch. To hold the ball. To counter attack. To get the ball out of their 1/3. 5 defenders AND two defensive mids. With all the attacking quality England had on the bench. Disgraceful.
@daleviker58843 жыл бұрын
Southgate is the darling of the woke set, so of course the media are going to give him a free pass. He doesn't deserve credit for reaching a final, because given the squad at his disposal, the home ground advantage, and having the easy side through the luck of the draw, it is the minimum he should have achieved. And once in the final, he was practically gifted a 1-0 advantage, but he played not to lose rather than playing to win. And if he had to virtue signal with his choice of penalty takers, he should have at least put Rashford and Sancho on in extra time to get them warmed up and into the rhythm of the game. And putting so much pressure on Saka was ridiculous. The most that can be said of him is that other managers in the past have been as bad if not worse, but that is little consolation. This was England's big chance, and largely due to their manager, they blew it.
@MatteoSimeone223 жыл бұрын
Saka, a 19-year old, took his first-ever penalty in a senior game...in the Euro final given the responsibility for England's most important penalty in 55 years....to save them in their match... Mind-blowing management. They say that Southgate is a great manager, but he got very lucky with the opponents: England's record in tournaments under Southgate: Wins: Tunisia, Panama, Colombia (PK), Sweden, Croatia, Czech Rep, Germany, Denmark, Ukraine Losses: Belgium, Croatia, Italy (PK) Most of their wins were against average teams or fading teams (Croatia, Germany) England always lose when they face a good team. Under Venables, Hoddle, Eriksson, they had better managers and were unlucky to lose against Germany and Brazil, Argentina. Southgate has no winning experience at club-level.....and it showed when he made his team play like Stoke in the final vs Italy.

For all the talk about Italy “outplaying” England, it’s worth noting that Italy’s equaliser came from a set piece goalmouth scramble where the ball bounced kindly for Bonucci to get a tap in after Pickford saved the initial attempt from Chiellini. England just didn’t do enough to win the game. Folks should also note that unlike teams like Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, etc, England don’t yet have a clearly defined style of attacking play because they don’t have a winning template to draw on. And no one remembers 1966 let alone how that team played to win it. This England team is still struggling to find its footballing identity, which may be a function of the fact that for too many years prior to 2010 -2013 and the emergence of St George’s park and the EPPP program and other initiatives to develop young, more technically proficient players, England’s football authorities had wasted too many years tossing it off and settling for shortcut measures for success by hiring and firing managers - foreign and domestic - without any long term strategy or tactical plan that could be called the “England way” of playing to win. There were too many wasted years of different managers/coaches doing different things that ultimately left fans confused about what the plan was for winning. At least, Southgate is trying to give the team some degree of identity, even if it’s a pragmatic one, and 2 goals conceded from set play throughout the whole tournament kinda supports his method. The challenge now for England is to work on developing an effective attacking style of play that, even if it doesn’t bring a trophy, could still serve as a template for future teams. In short, England are still playing catch-up.

What manager in the whole world could get his team to a tournament final while keeping his best players on the bench? Sancho is a fantastic speedy dribbler that plays for Dortmund and can be an asset for England as a right forward. He’s not England’s best player. Rashford: good player, inconsistent season. Jude Bellingham: fantastic potential but only 18. None of them are England’s best players. And the players that did play all have more accomplishments than those I’ve listed. Phil Foden, on the other hand… Arguably, England’s most naturally gifted player, and he had 2 starts and came on once as a sub. England’s missing piece wasn’t on the bench. We’re still missing a midfielder like a Modric or a Kroos or Jorginho type player to knit that team. England did have chances to win the final. But that was down to individual player ability/or mistakes from Italy. Not the team nor management decisions. Although I'm Italian, let me give a little tip. The difference between a winner and a second-place finisher is that you step into the field to win it all. You don't play "safe", you don't give Italy all the possession which is when they play at their best. England set out to reach the final. Italy set out to win it. People seem to forget that in 30 years no one is going to care about second place at the Euro 2020. And Italy played knowing that, while England did not. Ps: as a fact id go as far as to quote CR7, "whatever my son does, in football or not, I want him to be the best". England was the best team, but they played without confidence, without building momentum. Looking at the talent on display for England vs Italy, we should have lost. But we played to win, confident we would always find a way for the Italian people. England played to not lose.

Southgate lacked ingenuity, creativity with his tactics and had overall poor squad management.

Why ESPN doesn't talk about the racism from english fans towards thier players? In the past they wanted punishment for Italy and Bulgaria but now they are silent. How come?

Southgate made mistakes, sure, but on the whole he improved on 2018, achieved England's best tournament result in 55 years and will use this experience to learn from. Southgate's leadership skills are generally great, he just made some mistakes.

Before the final, Southgate was considered to be knighted 😂😂
@simonoliver85763 жыл бұрын
Well he was a couple of penalty kicks away from being knighted and now he is a complete idiot m8 obviously I am being sarcastic typical British media but yes I do agree he could have been more offensive tactically but Italy deserved to win it really m8 to be honest? 😎😎

Well Saka took a good penalty in the far corner but it was the Italian man-mountain gaint keeper who was brilliant and is the best goal keeper in the world. That`s why the keeper was the player of the tournament. It`s not that Saka was bad but keeper was excellent

You criticize Gareth but you are blind. Your players on the night of the defeat danced and drank while partying. In reality, from the images, you couldn't have distinguished who won or lost the game if you hadn't seen or read the news. When Spinazzola was injured against Belgium, the changing room was silent after the victory. Nobody celebrated the victory. The faults are not all of Gareth, but also of the whole system and the divas mentality of your talented players.

England don’t have a proper mentality, similar to Portugal, Spain, and France. This is why they should’ve never been regarded as a contender……

Identity politics has crept into football. Diversity and inclusion madness of Liberals who are obsessed with skin color instead of meritocracy and capability. The three black guys who missed the penalty were picked because of identity politics(skin color) but not because they were the best to take those penalties.

The system. The Quenn must have paid for there trip to the finals and getting every game at home. With large crowds. He lost the game when he set up with 5 defenders and 2 holding midfielders. Than a lucky goal 2 min in beautiful and, let's defend for 88 minutes now. Good job 👏. Kane no impact after minute 5, same with Sterling blah blah blah. Pathetic coaching in a final

Why didnt Southgate go for the win?! Kane and Sterling were gassed by the end of the first half! He had kids on the bench waiting to stick the dagger into the Italians! Rashford, Sancho and Grealish would have made the Azzuri pay for leaving their defense the same thru out the Euro. Southgate has to go.
@MrSitemaster23 жыл бұрын
The Italian midfield dominated the game in the 2nd half, and England couldn't get the ball to their forwards in attacking positions, so it wouldn't have mattered who England had up front.
