It's just a matter of media narrative. If England win that shootout, Southgate is seen as a genius to have brought on Rashford and Sancho. Also the same logic applies to keepers being subbed. If Netherlands dont win their shootout against Costa Rica in 2014, it would be seen as idiotic to bring on Krul. And I would argue that it is even more important for keepers to be warmed up than players taking the penalty.

Nedum & Steve got it wrong. Statistics give empirical evidence: players who enter to take a pen at the 120, these two, like Zaza for Italy in 2016, Carragher in 2006, all missed. The same reason why an otherwise excellent Maguire terribly mispasses to Pickford (to give a corner) in the 1st min or why Di Lorenzo missed Shaw's run on the 2nd. It's the nerves and pressure of starting a big game, over time you shake it off as you get more and more involved. As you walk to the spot from the middle, your heart beats faster and your stomach cramps, while most others on the pitch had the benefit of going through that 120 mins earlier
@minhvo86453 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Plus, Nedum said that sometimes substituted players (in normal game time) score with their first touch. The thing is they don't have a high expectation at that time to score, so if they score, that's great (less pressure). However, the players that are substituted at the last minute of extra time definitely has to be for the penalty shootout, this time they have higher expectations to have to score (really high pressure) Plus, Southgate was taking a risk there. Penalties are tough. Saka and Rashford could have scored and they would be viewed as saints on tv. Gigi almost caught Kanes penalty, and if Kane missed, he would have been critisized for his whole life. Penalties are tough, anybody can miss, Messi misses, Ronaldo misses. Some you win, some you lose. Italy was the better team. England had very very few 'dangerous' chances to score, they only did once. Italy played their ball players(Verratti+Jorginho)together for as long as they could in the tournament to control games and keep posession. Foden +Grealish played 10 mins togethe during the whole tournament. Kane doesn't drop so far back if you play those two with Sterling running in behind then you can drop Mount to play alongside Rice or Phillips or to the bench. But England would have beern much more positive and frighting on the attack if they had those two(Grealish+Foden) linking up and creatining the chances. Kane would have had a lot of opportunities and England would have been very scary.

Mount doesn't play well deep. Agree with the other stances but Mount and Kane dont combine well. Mount to me is more of a in behind kind of attacking mid that creates space for others to come in to. Works great when you have someone coming in behind but not good when your striker is also dropping deep. I think dropping mount deep though would ruin the space for Sterling and Saka to run into. That's why mount didn't receive the ball a lot in the final for some reason they had him playing outwide and cutting in instead of parking him behind the striker and making his movements from there

Gareth is too scared of that kind of a formation because it will drag Rice and Phillips out of position of basically being his make shift center backs and as a result expose Stones and Maguire. It was so obvious and Italy took 100% advantage of it, England basically played with 6 defenders in that final. There were not enough players in midfield to push the team forward because half of England's midfield was covering the defence. This worked very well against smaller teams and a poor Germany because Kane bossed them in midfield and basically ran the show and single handedly dragged the team forward. Italy knew they just needed to silence Kane and the others would fall. Italy had the quality to do so and the rest was history! Points to take home... against a quality team you cannot depend on your hermit crab defence to do the job! You will need to take your chances even if it means leaving yourself exposed! Sadly, I don't think Southgate will be willing to expose his hermit crab defence because the moment he does that and lose the media will slaughter him and his players! It is a horrible cycle.

I personally believe it’s more of a psychological issue. By ‘being brought on’ to take a penalty it suggests that you are in a way ‘expected’ to score. That adds even more pressure onto the crazy amount of pressure they already have. We need to test/practice how our boys deal with pressure (of course as much as technique). I.e get the whole squad watching intently when practicing penalties, mindfulness meditation to calm negative thoughts, use VR to simulate occasion and desensitize the response to the visual/audio stimulus etc.

Kickers in American Football literally do this though. They watch the entire game only to get called on and win it with one kick. At the high school, college, and professional level. It's been done in European football before too e.g. Alan Shearer being a great example of someone you can sub on to get a definitive penalty and rattle the opposing keeper in the process. The issue is Southgate used the wrong strategy for this group of guys. They did not need to park the bus and win the match with a test of nerves -- they should have whacked in three or four goals in 90 minutes as they have been doing all tournament! Womp womp

What ??? Southgate did not bring on two bums like RMTT or me. Nedum himself contradicted himself when he brought up the example of the big deal we make when a players first touch is a goal. Harry Maguire was nervous at the start of the game and he played a pass out for an Italy corner because he hadn’t got a few touches in yet and got used to the occasion, this is the equivalent of Rashford and Sancho being expected to take a cool penalty before they’ve got a few good touches and got used to the occasion
@TenshiThesseus3 жыл бұрын
Very good point. Rashford and Sancho going in that late was so stupid.
@solomongrundy68063 жыл бұрын
So Rashford, a professional footballer can't hit the target from a dead ball placed 11 steps away from said target unless he has had a few touches? Perhaps, he should think his career choice over no? The claim is ridiculous. Sancho did hit the target but Donarumma guessed correctly and parried it. I mean, it wasn't like they both didn't contact the ball correctly. What proof can you produce that touching the ball for 10 minutes (would that be enough "few touches") wouldn't have made Rashford not hit the target and Sancho not shoot to the keeper's left with the keeper going that same direction and parrying the shot?
@joakazia74253 жыл бұрын
@@solomongrundy6806 the evidence is that in the opening minutes of the game Harry Maguire misplaced a basic pass and by the end of the game scored an unstoppable penalty yet 2 attacking players who hadn’t kicked a football in a few hours could not score a penalty. Your argument is ridiculous if you think Rashford should rethink his career choice. It’s possible that Rashford and Sancho were nervous because they had been sat down for the past two hours without the adrenaline of playing in England’s biggest most tense football game in the last 55 years.

@@solomongrundy6806 I don't think you have played any competitive sport ever. No matter how good you are , how professional you are, it's always better to calm down, have a control over your nerves, get a touch, get a pass feel confident. Penalty kick is skill and confidence. You can have all the skill but if you are not 100% confident, you are more likely to miss.

What I hate about this whole discussion on penalties is that, England feel like they had a right to win the final. That is why their pundits are so bitter about it. Even great players miss penalties, CR7, Shevschenko, Bastian and John Terry and many more. All these were experienced enough when stepping on the spot so no big that Saka went ahead of Grealish. A famous penalty taker of yesteryear - Charlie Mitten of Man. United - is reported to have remarked (just before his death in 2002): "Looking at the number of penalty misses by the supposedly best players in the world, I often wonder how often some of them practice what is, after all, the simplest kick in soccer - and the easiest." Nearly twenty years on, we are entitled to ask the same question.

Rashford came out and said he has been struggling with confidence and questioned if he could take the penalty.
