എന്താണ് ESR എന്ന് അറിയാത്തവർക്ക് വേണ്ടി. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate എന്നതിന്റെ ചുരുക്കെഴുതാണ് ESR. Erythrocyte എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ ചുവന്ന രക്താണുക്കൾ. ESR എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ 'ചുവന്ന രക്താണുക്കൾ അടിഞ്ഞു കൂടുന്നതിന്റെ നിരക്ക്' എന്ന് മലയാളത്തിൽ പറയാം. അതായത് രക്‌തം എടുത്ത് ടെസ്റ്റ് ട്യൂബിൽ ഒഴിച്ച് കുറച്ചു സമയം കാത്തിരുന്നാൽ അതിലെ ചുവന്ന രക്താണുക്കൾ എല്ലാം ടെസ്റ്റ് ട്യൂബിന്റെ അടിത്തട്ടിൽ അടിഞ്ഞു കൂടും. ഇങ്ങനെ അടിഞ്ഞു കൂടുന്നതിന്റെ വേഗത ആണ് ESR ഇൽ നോക്കുന്നത്.
