At your position as post doct and carrying all your class notes and different projects you are working on with many more responsibilities than a student i understand why you love taking notes and be that organized. On my side I am doing masters, and i don’t usually take notes, i don’t understand what all my equals write in their lab notes so much as many of them have tons of pages and even had filled more than one notebook, I am about to finish with 7 pages written on my lab notebook. I written down in those 7 pages all the key points i had to focus on for different tests and the accomplishment of objectives, references to data sheets of products and equipment, and some detailed lab procedures and instrumentation steps only if they were not done very often and i could forget. I did not feel i was missing information or that i had to take better notes at any point when i was writing my papers.

1. Don't know why you had a blue screen ;) 2. I have a physical little blue book I call 'Idea Book', where I write down thoughts. I should look into digitalizing more. Currently I just put a lot down in different Word files, so without good cross-referencing. Thanks for boosting me! :D
@PhDCoffeeTime4 жыл бұрын
The blue screen is driving me crazy, I think it may be just my computer! Glad you are inspired by this tips, it wasn't obvious how useful it would be until I invested some time to try it out. Best part is that the software is free so you could always switch back to what's working well! If you already have multiple word files, having the "file directory" (file naming system, locations, dates created...etc) noted on OneNote is a great place to connect the pieces without changing your current system! On the contrary, I personally have started writing journals on my unemployment thoughts theses days and realize the power of inking because I haven't been writing on actual paper for many years!

I was expected to find a way how to use tags in one note. How you tag finished places or need references, hard part you need to work later etc.
@PhDCoffeeTime3 жыл бұрын
Hi Алексей, OneNote 2020 has more features on catergoizing Tags (e.g. you can rename the tags for projects), but here is a link to the basics: support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/apply-a-tag-to-a-note-in-onenote-908c7b92-6ed0-498d-bc7d-1b44e6827d05 If you are trying to use OneNote for literature note-taking and cross-referencing, be sure to watch this other video. Can you add a citation from zotero on one note? If you uploaded a word document, can you edit it and save it again?
@PhDCoffeeTime3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sahar, the better place to do that is Google Word! I have heard that Zotero is now available on Google Word, and you could save the link on OneNote. Hope this tip is helpful!

Love your channel! Thank you! I’ve started using OneNote through my university (through Office 365), but I can’t find a good way to export pages or notebooks (it seems the regular export options only work with personal accounts), and I’m a little worried about what will happen to my notes once I graduate and lose access to my uni account. Have you dealt with this problem?
@PhDCoffeeTime4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniela, great intiative that you have taken University workshop on Office 365, thank you for your question and comment. I've enjoyed reading your thought, and it's a fair concern with University account. It is quite easy to move the entire notebook to a personal account (appuals.com/how-to-move-your-onenote-2016-notebook-to-another-onedrive-account/) You also have the options to export everything on OneNote to Word/PDF file. (www.howtogeek.com/howto/22679/beginner-save-your-onenote-2010-docs-to-different-file-formats/) Sometimes University have alumni agreement to keep gmail account permanently, so it's always worth talking to a librarian/ IT representative and find out what would be your alumni privilege :)
@danielawilner81734 жыл бұрын
@@PhDCoffeeTime Thank you so much for the quick and thorough reply!! :) I will definitely ask about alumni privileges, thank you! Unfortunately, it seems that the option to export an entire notebook is no longer available for OneNote for Business, but I did end up finding another way to transfer notebooks (section by section); here's a link to the explanation in case anyone else is having the same problem: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/how-to-export-a-onenote-notebook-on-a-mac/2c7219b2-12c8-4273-aff0-7eef5e36187b

How do you backup onenote offline to pc and and backup online automatically everyday?
@PhDCoffeeTime3 жыл бұрын
Good question Jason! Personally, I have never thought of backing up because I have great offline experience with OneNote (unlike other notetaking platform like Notion), seems like everything is kept the same even I have no wifi access. I know OneNote can be exported as Word file, I only use that feature when I need to prepare a shareable file for my coworkers.

What abouth hand writing
@PhDCoffeeTime3 жыл бұрын
I have handwritten notes when I try to organize an abstract idea (drawing/mind mapping). I know writing is supposed to help our hand and brain coordinate better and build more solid memory. My handwriting is awful, so I have always preferred typing. This is completely personal, I think any form of note-taking is great for researchers!
@douglasdrumond3 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen some people (based on my non-scientific observation of my heavily biased social media) in academic research moving to RoamResearch or Obsidian.md to take notes because of their model of linking and back-linking that encourages serendipitous discovery of connections between the notes. For me, it’s down to how each person prefers to take notes. Evernote and OneNote are very similar in the organization approach, Notion provides more flexibility, but requires more planning up-front, and Obsidian (or Roam, but I prefer Obsidian to have my data in plain files).
@PhDCoffeeTime3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the point about linking, Douglas. In fact, I just realize that you could link on OneNote too, simply by right clicking! (support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/create-links-to-notebooks-sections-pages-and-paragraphs-in-onenote-for-windows-10-48dd0e82-623c-405d-b63a-df4eaf55c72a) I personally find the offline experience of OneNote more stable/ supportive than other note-taking apps like Notion/RoamResearch. I find the artistic aspect of Notion quite overwhelming, and I love building tables too much to use RoamResearch. I should probably create a video to share my view on this topic to demonstrate how much of a grandma I am :) Anyways, I think as long as everyone is taking notes, it doesn't matter which app you use!

Has anyone ever lost their notes due to sync conflicts? I am afraid of this :S I am starting my PhD these days and am looking for useful tools
@PhDCoffeeTime4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mr Niceguy, good question and I have quite positive experience with Syn Conflicts with OneNote (usually due to conflicts when I logged in with multiple computers). Both versions are kept, and you have the opportunities to compare and save the right version. The offline experience of OneNote is much better than other note-taking app like Notion. Here is a blog I have found helpful in explaining the syn conflict scenarios. www.windowscentral.com/how-troubleshoot-and-fix-common-sync-issues-onenote-windows-10#:~:text=When%20OneNote%20detects%20a%20conflict,page%2C%20click%20the%20yellow%20message. "While collaborating in real-time with another person trying to edit the same piece of text can cause synchronization conflicts. When OneNote detects a conflict, it'll create copies of the same page, and you'll see a yellow message indicating the problem."

@@PhDCoffeeTime Wow, thanks a lot for your reply! Good to know. I really want to use OneNote but as I said, I don't want to lose everything after 3 years :D So I guess I'll go for it :) And I'll frequently export important things as PDF anyway
