Hi! I make beeswax candles, a mixture of 1lb beeswax and & then 4oz of coconut oil to decrease cracking and increase burn time. When I first started making candles a few months ago, I only used the minimally processed beeswax and tried to work only with essential oils. Following the advice of someone on youtube, I once put so much essential oil in my candles that the first one I lit caught fire! I had to melt that whole batch down twice, diluting with more wax before it was safe. Now I use a mixture of essential oil and fragrance oils (some even say they are made with essential oil!). I always use 10% fragrance in my candles and although the ones with only essential oil don't have as strong a hot throw, they do blend well with the natural honey scent of my wax and turn out pretty well. I feel like the composition of the wax is more important, considering you are also breathing the wax in as it is being burned as fuel for the flame, another reason I love beeswax and coconut oil. Thanks for this video!

All of the other explanations I've seen so far on using essential oils would have you believe They're an extreme fire hazard, produce extremely weak candles, and therefore should not be used, needless to say, many of those explanations came from fragrance oil suppliers. As someone with breathing issues I find scented ones are usually waaaay to strong and headache inducing. It's hard to find unscented or lightly scented. The more natural and gentle the better, I'm definitely in the essential oils camp.
@KorraMea3 ай бұрын
Literally same but....opposite for me. Breathing issues and I cant handle strong scents (headaches and the works) and also have asthma, allergies, eczema (really shouldn't just be alive apparently) so I have to do unscented skincare products, soaps, shampoos, moisturizers etc. Buuuuuuut I was also cursed with an affiliation for scents so I try to find nonskin contact scented products, what I found is that essential oils are generally a NO-go for me because of the magnitude of compounds that are in just one essential oil that can trigger all the things I have. Can immediately tell when there's essential oil in candles when my eyes starts burning after a few minutes and my skin start to itch. I find that natural is actually harsher, because at the end of the day they're all chemical compounds and fewer variety of compounds is easier to isolate and control for sensitivity issues. It's hard but I try to find lightly scented, low throw, non-essential oil candles and use candle warmer lamps to avoid the combustion related triggers. Hence why I came to this video to maybe learn how to make my own that won't kill me, but so far fragrance oil camp for me.

Great video. I have a question. Is it true that lighting a candle that contains Essential oils can possibly ignite? I was also reading that you need to stir the wax with the essential oil vigorously to avoid this from happening. My question is, what’s the likelihood of my candles igniting in my customers faces?
@ArmatageCandleCompany3 жыл бұрын
No more than with fragrance oils. Ignition like you describe happens when a pool of fragrance/essential oil exists in the candle and the flame gets near it, raises its temp to the flash point of the oil, then ignites the vapors given off by it. Pools only form when the oils are unstirred, there's too much oil, or the oil was added to the wax while the wax was at a much lower temperature. You don't need to vigorously stir, but feel free to as long as you don't introduce air (for cure profile reasons, not fire safety). I tend to stir for longer periods of time with a more gentle stroke, placing the wax back on the heat (or leaving it there) if I miss my window for any reason. Oh, and make sure you're testing one in a bunch of those candles. In summary: - stir without introducing air - add EO at a higher wax temp, like 185°F - don't overload your wax - Test Hope that helps!

Very informative, thank you! I've just started out and am weighing up which to use. I'm leaning towards natural/essential (with soy) You mentioned a lower temperature system for essential oils. How can I do this?
@ArmatageCandleCompany4 жыл бұрын
Great question! You've chosen a difficult, but rewarding, path! Lower temperature refers to the overall temps of the wick and melt pool. It's very dependent on the oils you use and the wax and the only way to measure is while it's in use. You'll need an IR thermometer and a good sense of smell to know if you're getting the "performance" out of the scent that you want. Very subjective. The objective side is the standard testing criteria, which I cover in a video. It handles considerations like container temperature, sooting, and other items you don't want in a candle. Hope that helps! Testing is the only way to know anything in candle making - the "right" temps for your application might be completely wrong for other applications, otherwise I could give you a more specific goal to look for.

I recently bought a little kit to play around with candle making and it came with essential oils. the thing i've been trying to figure out is that my candles have ended up with some white flakey /cracked tops. Is that due to essential oils or is it another thing i could improve on?
@ArmatageCandleCompany4 жыл бұрын
Great question! If you're working with soy wax, it's probably *not* the oils. Cracked tops generally occur when different parts of the candle cool at different rates, but the "smooth top" idea is insanely hard to replicate time in and time out. A few things to try, even if you're not using soy: 1. Pre-heat the jars by touching them with a heat gun briefly before pouring to take the sting off (temp difference between wax and jar) 2. Pour wax at a cooler temperature, and I mean really cool. If it's soy, wait until it's foggy and make sure to lightly stir up until the point to keep the overall temperature consistent. 3. Boost the ambient air temp in your work area. Sometimes a chilly atmosphere causes the tops to harden long before the middle of the candle. Wax contracts as it cools, meaning it pulls the top down on itself as it hardens and cracks it as a result. Hope that helps!

I am actually using essential oils and all candelilla wax for my candles, and the hot throw I am getting is excellent. Cold throw is mild but smells great. I figured out the adding my essential oils at 153 degrees and stirring them in well is key. Thanks for the video.

I'm starting to experience soy candle wax for wax melts and votive candles. My sister sells Scentsy, but some of the fragrances from Scentsy are too overwhelming. I'm opting for essential oils in my candles and wax melts.

I just started experimenting and only working with soy. I have a huge ethical dilemma about which to use because of toxins especially after reading the SDS. I want to make sure that whatever I sell is safe for both humans and pets. Both EO’s and PO’s from my research can be toxic depending on the scent. I really want to hire someone to shed more light on this for me. Who would I be looking for? Chemist? Thank you!

Good stuff. Thank you. I make beeswax candles with essential oils and your explanation of needing a lower melt temp with essential oils makes sense. This brings me to considering switching to soy or a soy and beeswax blend. maybe just adding coconut oil will work.

Wow amazing explanation thank you!! 🙏🏽 I would love some advice with my situation if possible. I have only used fragrance oils in my candles so far. I am a holistic practitioner for animals mostly and was told by the holistic community that candles are very toxic and that you should never use fragrances in the home with animals as it can cause the the liver to be over taxed. I am aware that there are certain essential oils that are not animal friendly as I work with essential oils in other ways. I know animals are more sensitive than us so would it be best to stick with animal friendly essential oils in this case? Is there such thing as an animal friendly fragrance oil? Thanks! 🙏🏽

I really don’t have any idea on what i used on my candle. I bought a candle making kit and everything in it, including the scent oil, just do not know f that is essential or fragrance oil i am a newbie on this. In short i already made my candle but when my candle is on the process of drying or solidifying it produces water and it seems like its floating in water.

I was in the process of making a gift basket of calming products for my girls who are now mothers. I bought everything to make candles again, it’s been a few years, but I thought you had to use essential oils. Personally my favorite is a strong eucalyptus mint, which reminds me of a hotel I stayed at in New Orleans. I thought the only way to add fragrance was to add EO. Thank you for explaining all this. It’s very helpful! Looks like I just go buy one and then go home and experiment.

Thank you! I have learned so much! I use beeswax with both essential oils and "natural" fragrances. Testing 4 scent combos now . My constant is the jar size and wax (with coconut oil and goat milk...yes, I live on a farm 😊) . The performance seems to be better when I combine the certified natural fragrance AND essential oils...my branding is all natural. Also, in testing the same fragrance combination I get a better hot throw scent when coconut oil is used rather than just plan beeswax and goat milk. I was discouraged at first when I discovered all the testing required BUT science/chemistry was my favorite subject in school so I'm really enjoying this!!! Thanks for sharing your wisdom! ~jc

Hi Kevin, thank you for your video and since you maintained the (FLASHING POINT) let me ask you this, if the melting point of wax is 145°F and the flashing point of the fragrance oil is 190 to 220F will the candle give the proper scent? I mean isn’t supposed for both (Wax & Fragrance Oil) to melt at the same time? Could you please explain this point cause I'm really confused about it Thank you for your time

Great info. Nice and clearly explained. I'm just starting literally 3 days in and I strongly prefer to and would like to exclusively use EO's but I understand the HT is not that strong. I'm trying to stay as natural as possible but having difficulty adding enough to make it scent-fully noticeable. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
@ArmatageCandleCompany3 жыл бұрын
A lot of avenues for answering your question. I'll start with the recommendation of being patient and testing, which really means cure the candle (soy for 10-14 days, paraffin for 72 hours, palm for 5 days, parasoy for 5-14 days) before burning it and see if that impacts your scent throw. You can also check out other areas of my channel for exploring how Hot Throw (scent power) works to see if that lends any insight into your candle. I just released a video on the BLO test, which is a good framework for honestly evaluating how strong your scent throw is. Hope that helps!

Do you have any info on the amount of waste that essential oils creates as opposed to synthetic? I’ve heard that the amount of plants that goes into making EO is quite a lot but something that isn’t shared a lot about.
