This is absolutely the BEST explanation I've seen so far. No bias. No scare tactics. Just hard facts. I'm a soap maker using only essential oils and want to do the same with my candles which I'm now ading to my line. All of the other explanations I've seen so far on using essential oils would have you believe They're an extreme fire hazard, produce extremely weak candles, and therefore should not be used, needless to say, many of those explanations came from fragrance oil suppliers. Thank you for this.

Hi! I make beeswax candles, a mixture of 1lb beeswax and & then 4oz of coconut oil to decrease cracking and increase burn time. When I first started making candles a few months ago, I only used the minimally processed beeswax and tried to work only with essential oils. Following the advice of someone on youtube, I once put so much essential oil in my candles that the first one I lit caught fire! I had to melt that whole batch down twice, diluting with more wax before it was safe. Now I use a mixture of essential oil and fragrance oils (some even say they are made with essential oil!). I always use 10% fragrance in my candles and although the ones with only essential oil don't have as strong a hot throw, they do blend well with the natural honey scent of my wax and turn out pretty well. I feel like the composition of the wax is more important, considering you are also breathing the wax in as it is being burned as fuel for the flame, another reason I love beeswax and coconut oil. Thanks for this video!

I use 100% essential oils in my candles the trick is really learning to blend them so I’ve ended up learning a lot about natural perfumery and knowing how to mix top/middle/base notes is gonna get you a good scent throw for sure & also bring up the flashpoint for the lighter oils :) I don’t find them to be too much of my costs, but I also don’t have to pay for jars because I repurpose bottles so that probably makes a difference

As someone with breathing issues I find scented ones are usually waaaay to strong and headache inducing. It's hard to find unscented or lightly scented. The more natural and gentle the better, I'm definitely in the essential oils camp.
@KorraMea6 ай бұрын
Literally same but....opposite for me. Breathing issues and I cant handle strong scents (headaches and the works) and also have asthma, allergies, eczema (really shouldn't just be alive apparently) so I have to do unscented skincare products, soaps, shampoos, moisturizers etc. Buuuuuuut I was also cursed with an affiliation for scents so I try to find nonskin contact scented products, what I found is that essential oils are generally a NO-go for me because of the magnitude of compounds that are in just one essential oil that can trigger all the things I have. Can immediately tell when there's essential oil in candles when my eyes starts burning after a few minutes and my skin start to itch. I find that natural is actually harsher, because at the end of the day they're all chemical compounds and fewer variety of compounds is easier to isolate and control for sensitivity issues. It's hard but I try to find lightly scented, low throw, non-essential oil candles and use candle warmer lamps to avoid the combustion related triggers. Hence why I came to this video to maybe learn how to make my own that won't kill me, but so far fragrance oil camp for me.

Thank you for this informative video. I learned what you shared through time, trial and error. I use essential oils in my candles because I have a health and wellness company which offers aromatherapy products made with essential oils and I only want natural oils in my candles. When making my candles, I allow the wax to cool to the touch (until the wax is almost filmy) and then I add the oil, this way the fragrance is stronger than if the temperature was higher. I also only use therapeutic grade essential oils. Customers have told me that the candles burn nicely and smell great 😊.

I have some that are essential oils only. They do get some scent from herbs such as white sage and palo santo that are mixed in as well. Others are a blend of more natural fragrance oils that have no phthalates, nitro musk, or other things that are determined to be negative for our health or environment, and essential oils. I adore the products I make, but certainly have had to learn some specialty processes to get them just right. The biggest suggestion is to work at much lower temperatures. This video is SO helpful and I really appreciate the work you put into it! 🙏🏻 I started making candles a few months ago and I did start my testing using essential oils only. I have finally gotten to a place where I’m more comfortable with my hot throw. I am interested in what you mentioned about creating a cooler burning candle when using essential oils. Do you have any more advice on the best wicks, jars, and waxes for essential oil candles? I have been using 464 soy wax, glass mason jars, and CD 8 & 12 wicks. I would love to learn literally anything else you have to offer on this type of candle. Every kernel of info I have found through my research has been so helpful. Sadly there isn’t much available. Thank you so much for creating this video! ✨

Over the past 2 weeks I've been ordering and having a go at this. I was one of the ones who assumed essential were good for beginning so have been using some of them. After watching this though in definitely going to try fragrance oils. I'm definitely all about the smell. Do you have a video on frosting on soy wax?

Hi. I am in the process of creating an all organic CBD and essential oil candle company in the UK. I didn't realise how scientific making an essential oil candle was but I am going to continue down the all eco and organic root as I love the idea of making healthy candles. Do you have any advice about where to get more information on good essential candle recipes? :)

Great video TY. Been making candles for more than 10 years and I personally prefer using FO. I would also have added something about pet sensitivities regarding each but that’s just me.

Wow thanks so much. You're definitely right about that - appreciate the insight!

Hey, I recently started making candles and I'm trying to find any kind of information about how FO affect pets. You see, I have two cats and I'm kinda scared that i will harm them with my candles... i heard that some essential oils can be very harmful for cats but does that also happen with fragrance oils? Could you recommend any sources about that?
@ArmatageCandleCompany4 жыл бұрын
@@arwena4041 Great question. As far as candles are concerned, I wouldn't worry about your cats. I have two of them and a dog, myself and they don't seem to care. If you're interested in diffusers or alternative methods of home fragrance with EO, I'm really not in a position to offer advice. I just don't know enough about it. In every case though, the raw supplies (the straight up oils) should be handled with care and kept out of reach or access by pets.

As a beginner candle maker I found this very informative...I've noticed with buying candles some are overpowering is this because they are made with fragrance?...
@ArmatageCandleCompany Жыл бұрын
Throw is a function of many things, but strong candles are usually from having the right sized wick more than having a lot of fragrance, surprisingly.

there's a candle co I like called Tatine and they use 'perfume oils' apparently and I'm curious if that's fragrance oils or actual perfume compounds like from perfume manufacturers

Wow amazing explanation thank you!! 🙏🏽 I would love some advice with my situation if possible. I have only used fragrance oils in my candles so far. I am a holistic practitioner for animals mostly and was told by the holistic community that candles are very toxic and that you should never use fragrances in the home with animals as it can cause the the liver to be over taxed. I am aware that there are certain essential oils that are not animal friendly as I work with essential oils in other ways. I know animals are more sensitive than us so would it be best to stick with animal friendly essential oils in this case? Is there such thing as an animal friendly fragrance oil? Thanks! 🙏🏽

Thank You 💜 I learned some new things. I use Essential Oils for my companycalled ButterScented Candles. I mixs all my oils for stronger Scents. I create my names for my Scents as well. I have been thinking about using fragrance oils, but didn't really know much about them so thank you.

I'm a bit disappointed because you didn't talked about the aromatherapy effect with essential oils which you don't get with fragrance oils. I use essential oils in my candles and I really like it as you said I'm aiming to the natural side of candles and not just a good hot throw

Great video. I have a question. Is it true that lighting a candle that contains Essential oils can possibly ignite? I was also reading that you need to stir the wax with the essential oil vigorously to avoid this from happening. My question is, what’s the likelihood of my candles igniting in my customers faces?
@ArmatageCandleCompany4 жыл бұрын
No more than with fragrance oils. Ignition like you describe happens when a pool of fragrance/essential oil exists in the candle and the flame gets near it, raises its temp to the flash point of the oil, then ignites the vapors given off by it. Pools only form when the oils are unstirred, there's too much oil, or the oil was added to the wax while the wax was at a much lower temperature. You don't need to vigorously stir, but feel free to as long as you don't introduce air (for cure profile reasons, not fire safety). I tend to stir for longer periods of time with a more gentle stroke, placing the wax back on the heat (or leaving it there) if I miss my window for any reason. Oh, and make sure you're testing one in a bunch of those candles. In summary: - stir without introducing air - add EO at a higher wax temp, like 185°F - don't overload your wax - Test Hope that helps!

Kevin, can you guide me as to where to purchase good quality fragrance oils? It would be very much appreciated. Thanks again, Gloria from Montréal.
@JAMIEgf4 жыл бұрын
Very informative, thank you! I've just started out and am weighing up which to use. I'm leaning towards natural/essential (with soy) You mentioned a lower temperature system for essential oils. How can I do this?
@ArmatageCandleCompany4 жыл бұрын
Great question! You've chosen a difficult, but rewarding, path! Lower temperature refers to the overall temps of the wick and melt pool. It's very dependent on the oils you use and the wax and the only way to measure is while it's in use. You'll need an IR thermometer and a good sense of smell to know if you're getting the "performance" out of the scent that you want. Very subjective. The objective side is the standard testing criteria, which I cover in a video. It handles considerations like container temperature, sooting, and other items you don't want in a candle. Hope that helps! Testing is the only way to know anything in candle making - the "right" temps for your application might be completely wrong for other applications, otherwise I could give you a more specific goal to look for.
