Mistakes happen and admitting them, particularly in this forum, is a testament to your character. It also shows that you're human, like the rest of us mortals. Enjoying the whole process and observing both the differences and similarities in construction, to what happens here in New Zealand. Cheers Vandy.

Nate - Great job on the wide shots and the arrow indicators for reference. I never have to wonder what Scott's talking about where. I can usually tell just by the close shot, but, bouncing between two frames of reference helps anchor things in my head.

admitting that mistake takes guts; thank you. the biggest lesson for us in that, as I see it, is that if everything is planned well within tolerances, then mistakes are much less likely to be a huge problem. just like buying a little more concrete to tie the pillars to the footings may make a difference in the long run, putting those footings closer together than they needed to be made a difference right away.

This channel is never a letdown. Awesome to see the admission of error, it happens. We all get caught up in focusing on details that we miss the obvious. The good news is, that footing is so wide, you should have no problem, just remember to snap your lines accordingly to make up for it... that's something I would forget to do at first... just until I tried laying in the first joist that isn't long enough to fit and then realize... oh pooh! Keep up the great work, I was taught by all old school carpenters and tradesman, you cant replace experience with schooling, you're the best, I love it! You too Nate, Good Job!

Just to be on the safe side, you should probably get a tooth pulled to teach yourself a lesson. On a related note, the deflection of a beam under load is proportional to the cube of the height. Doubling it makes the beam almost 10 times stronger. You made an excellent point.

I'm a 48 year chemist from Detroit. I have no history in building science, and frankly I'm only moderately hand around my own house. That house is a 1913 America 4 square build (around here they call it a Dutch 4 square) in the old Henry Ford neighborhood in the shadow of the original Ford Model T assembly factory. Most houses in our sub between 1908-1925 are custom builds like this. Our house is old and in need of significant restoration if we intend to leave it for our girls after us. We even need to replace the foundation wall at the back corner thanks to years and years of poor water management by the previous owners. Last year my wife and I decided to immerse ourselves in the building process before we forked over our coin. We hoped if we knew more, we could ask better questions, and get better results. I enjoy this course a great deal, so much so that I brew a pot of coffee and set aside time just to watch it. This foundation section is truly awesome! I never knew all that went into a good foundation. Many thanks!!

Admitting that in a public forum, you are a way better man than I could ever hope to be. You know you could fix that with a Sawzall, a drill, some epoxy, and some anchor bolts. On the other hand, if your joists are going on top of the pony wall and the pony wall is at least 6 in thick, it would be completely unnecessary.

Love watching this guy work. He's very good at showing you what he's doing and explaining why he's doing it the way he is. Reminds me of my dad, he taught me a lot, and I probably could have learned a lot more if I had been smart enough to listen to him more in my younger years. I am in a spot now where I could use some advice about some thing I know a little about but not enough. My shop burned down and I am in the process of rebuilding the structure and want to do it on the existing concrete. The problem is there are several spots where the surface has popped up. Breaking up the floor and repouring it is not really an option, it is a 30x50 floor and is 6 to 8" thick with a lot of rebar in it. It would be a lot of work to tear out and expensive to repour. Has anybody out there dealt with this? The spots vary in size from about 1' to 2' in area and are anywhere from 1 to 2" deep.

Have you reflected on a systematic way of preventing that over-site? Maybe a spray can hit for each component after its final check? Is there a way of digitally capturing the elements so they can be compared/overlayed with the cad drawings before the pour? I can see myself missing some checks on an addition I’m undertaking. Really enjoying your vlog. The depth of attention to the details and the sense that you are trying to pass along long-earned knowledge is really appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

There are some things that I don't understand and it could be the way things are done in a different part of the country. That strip footing with a cripple wall is a new one for me. Around here in NC it would be piers and beams to support the load. Also in a house I had built the building inspector would not allow the footing to be placed on fill - it all had to go down to virgin soil; but I'm not an expert so don't know if that's unusual. I do, however, like that we didn't build on fill, no matter how well compacted it might have been.

Should put vapor barrier down before filling garage then halfway another vapor barrier. So if you seal and paint or stain garage floor moisture isn’t an issue. Oh and don’t slope your garage. Just add in floor drain. Surface tension will pull out flooding water. Some contractors put way too much slop on garage floor. I prefer .0000001% grade ;)

For serious though- Few inches off on a foundation to support floor joist is nothing as long as beams above still land where they need too, probably just as bad as parking your car a little bit to the left or right within the parking lines at homedepo- Great work Scott, wish we had the luxury to work on a wide open job site with all that space here in NYC

I was told a story, I say that so if it isn’t true I am mitigating my liability, when frank lloyd Wright built falling water when the time came to pull the forms for the cantilevered balcony the crew refused to go under it. He did it himself. The house was plagued with cracking because of expansion and contraction through the seasons, finally they put posts under it to support the cantilever. This was done before 2000 and well after frank’s death.

As a welder I know first hand the stresses of making mistakes. It sucks big time having to grind welds to fix something! That being said, in our shop, no welding gets done without a senior welder checking the layout first, then a senior welder checks the tack up. After that the piece gets welded out! Even then mistakes still happen. You fix it then move on!

With stem walls so high and being on a hill, I would have been tempted to have a full height basement. So all the foundation would be on solid shale and no compacted fill needed and a big usable basement with large windows along 2 sides.
