Being from Latvia, i can actually tell you why Riga was abandoned. You see, we escentially had no army, same with Estonia, ut there were far more issues with recruitment. Because of this, the high command decided to retreat to Liepāja, our third largest city and train more men there.

22:06 that's also pretty much what happened with Finland in the Continuation War (1941-1944), the Germans wanted Finnish troops to push deep into Russia, but after a while the Finnish troops just stopped and refused to go further, even the very high command just went "We're not going to fight on foreign land" and just halted the whole advance. Kind of funny how even in the midst of war, when people probably hated their enemy to no end they just stopped and went "this isn't our land, we don't want to be here."

Artur, when you talk about the war for independence, and the government that followed you are talking about my family, as the President's sister was my grandmother. We changed the spelling of our sir name from Matteus to Matthews as we were in business here in Canada and everyone had trouble pronouncing our name. I have studied our history for the past 60 years, and have learned much. I attended an Estonian school here in Canada for the first year of my schooling. A group of Russians burned down our school so I was no longer able to attend. As a result, I had to attend an English speaking school in place of our Estonian school. I have only started looking at your web site and I like what I have seen so far. Keep up the good work.

It is easy to see why Estonia contributes the highest percentage of GDP compared to all other countries, even though they don't have a huge bolstered military. Let the spirit of the Estonian people never be questioned, they have far proven themselves with their actions both historically and currently. Very nice vid, Artur. Two comments from my side: (1) Your suggestion that few or no Estonians live in Narva applies not to the 1918-1920 period here under discussion, but rather to the artificial situation created by World War Two. Before 1939, Narva was in ethnic terms an ordinary Estonian city, with Estonian freely spoken in the streets. (It was the home city of one of my aunts, who as I remember her from exile in Canada knew virtually **NO** Russian.) (2) It would be useful for someone, some time, somehow, to underscore the magnitude of the debt of gratitude Estonia owes not only to the Finnish volunteers and to Russian anti-Bolsheviks, but additionally to the Royal Navy, who in 1918 sacrificed more than 100 lives in the Estonian cause. Admiral Sir Walter Cowan, I guess working with my Esto hero Sir Johan Pitka (knighted, as KCMG, by HM George V 1920) prevented a late-1918 Red landing (in Estonian, a "dessant") on the north coast. I THINK the judgement of the history professionals is that had the "dessant" succeeded, Estonia could have lost the war almost as soon as it started. - I do know from a family story that things were getting desperate in that 1918 autumn. If I remember correctly, my grandma saw or heard, or perhaps smelled, the then Esto govt authorities burning archives, in the fear that the Reds were about to take Tallinn. Governments only burn their archives when a crisis seems to be approaching culmination. (signed) Toomas = toomaskarmo.blogspot.com (writing from Tõravere Hamlet, Nõo Commune, Tartu County)

Yet the Estonian City of Pechory is now a Russian city. In spite of it being officially a part of Estonia in the1920 Peace Agreement in 1944 the land was transferred to another Russian District1991 Russia kept two small parts of Estonia as Russian Territory. This was done partly to try and delay the Estonian quest to join the EU and Nato, because a country with an active border dispute with a neighbour cannot join.
