Yay Estonia, I'm from Lithuania, oh just like to say that Estonia is technically Baltic, I mean they are labeled as Baltic on the international stage and we were all brothers throughout the soviet occupation, and Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia did make a human Chang along the the three countries after the fall of the Soviet Union. But Estonia if you want to be Nordic then that's ok but just remember you will always have a home in Lithuanias heart and in Latvias. Thanks Paul I really enjoyed this video keep up the great work, me and my friends love you're videos you're the best KZbin channel on earth.

***** Think of the mythology, which has influenced music, arts, literature etc. Plus the language. Plus the both ancient and modern seafaring culture. Plus a distinct sauna culture. Plus islands culture. Plus the former Swedish minority and certain places still have Swedish names. And self identity as well. And there are more, these are just a few.
@eksiarvamus8 жыл бұрын
***** I know that saunas are prevalent in Latvia as well, but Estonia actually has a little distinct different sauna culture. Kalevala is the Finnish national epic, Kalevipoeg is the Estonian one. Lacplesis is connected a little, but it's mainly fiction that was written after Kalevipoeg was published. Song and dance festivals derive from the Baltic Germans and became such a big thing mostly due to the Soviet occupation. Plus singing culture is far more prevalent in Estonia and the singing part of the Singing Revolution started and was a lot bigger in Estonia (not that Latvian Song Festivals don't continue to amaze me). If we compare us with very different cultures then of course we find similarities, but Estonia still has more similarities with the Nordic countries and especially Finland.
@eksiarvamus8 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah indeed, they are similar. Kalevipoeg is mostly fiction as well because the Kalevipoeg myths and folklore were an incomplete story, so a lot has been taken from Kalevala and a lot made up.

I live in Sweden but I was in Estonia almost 2 years ago with my brother and a group of other teenagers. We went to a pretty poor neighbourhood where there were no shops but a second hand shop. We went to visit an orphanage and gave some gifts to the children there but then we went into the second hand shop and took a look around. There was a pretty old woman behind the counter and she wouldn't stop staring at me and my brother. When we finally talked to her she told us that she had never met people with darker skin before. We thought this was and pretty cool and funny. She asked to touch our skin and hair and it was all really cool. She looked so happy. Estonia is one of the chillest places I have been so far in Europe.

Love Estonia! Oldtown Tallinn for example is such a beautiful place. Whether a Nordic country or not, being a Finn I still consider Estonia and Estonians to be the closest "relatives" of my country and people. Haven't been in Eesti for a while, but visiting several times in the nineties and early 2000's, it was cool to see the country rapidly and very clearly becoming a better place to live after gaining it's independence, just like had happened here some decades before.

@kalevipoeg53807 жыл бұрын
I'm Estonian and I'm fine with "eastern" just as long as it is NOT CONFUSED WITH RUSSIA or called a "former soviet country". A lot of people seem to wish they were nordic - and there are certainly elements from the nordic countries - but honestly, it's got other influences as well so it is more an amalgamation of different influences from different places. If you've ever been to Tallinn or Tartu, that much is undeniable even when looking at the architecture. As for the language, it is DEFINITELY not nordic. It's uralic, and unrelated to other European languages except for Finnish and Hungarian. So it's strange that people always seem to think it's a slavic language or scandinavian. In my family - we were one of those which had to flee Estonia when the Soviets came in during WWII - we always just called it "northern" or "northeastern" and SOMETIMES "eastern" (even my relatives who directly fought against the Soviets and were in the forest brothers STILL called it "eastern europe" and "northern europe" interchangeably) - my grandmother calls it eastern while my mother calls it "Baltic" or "northeastern" and sometimes "northern" - so it seems it depends on generation, too. My Great Grandfather grew up under Russian rule and HATED them - he took real bullets to his body during the war to fight them and try to get them out - and if you dared to say it was a "Russian country" or that the republic didn't exist anymore during the soviet occupation, you had better start running - but even HE didn't have a huge issue with being called "eastern european" or "eastern bloc" as many seem to today. I was lucky enough to live with him for a time as a child until he died in 1997 - so from him and my Grandparents I got to hear many cool stories from the war era - when you could get him to actually talk about it, that is. He was fluent in Russian - as he had to be growing up - but you could not get him to speak Russian in 99% of occasions because he refused to. So strongly he felt about THAT.
@Kaefer19736 жыл бұрын
"So it's strange that people always seem to think it's a slavic language or scandinavian." That depends on the Area I assume. Most people here in Germany probably wrongfully assume the Language to be related to these of Latvia and Lithuania since the three are considered a single barely seperated unit even by most German media. But I don't think most people even have any idea wether this baltic language family may be related to slavic or scandinavian languages. I on the other hand just never knew to which family the languages of Latvia and Lithuania are related, since I knew about the relationship between Finland and Estonia from a friend of Finnish origins already.

I only ever met one Estonian girl, she asked me if she could eat my cat. Looking back, I think she was joking.

it wasn't me! :D but i may know her. that's the thing, MOST dangerous here. jokes. ideally told with deadpan expression - not that typical estonian expression differs much, we are naturally poker-faced. but yes, it's considered here best taste to tell jokes so that there's no indication whatsoever that it might be funny. and another person, if has strong self-control might also not laugh, but reply smth to that joke with same deadpan face so's now the first person is thinking - did they not understand my joke or are they now making fool of me? :D maybe who is used to british humor will get it.

Wow Estonia sounds and looks cool, always knew where it was, maybe hop on a plane one day when visiting my family in Italy & Greece and check it out. Add it to my list of European destinations need to visit.
