REYNAULDS.COM presents a video on the new ESU HO Scale German electric locomotive class E94, also known as the German "Crocodile". The E94 was truly a unique locomotive due to their articulated three-part frame. The Deutsche Reichsbahn had the mighty E94's developed as a more powerful successor to the class E93. Delivery of the first locomotives commenced in 1940 during World War II. Since the class E94 was important for the war effort they were not subject to delivery stops due to shortages of raw materials. A total of 146 locomotives were built between 1940
and 1945. The E94 was a very impressive and powerful locomotive, it's output was 3300kW and a had a top speed of 90 km/h. In 1946 the newly commissioned Deutsche Bundesbahn(German Federal Railways)put another 49 locomotives into service which ran until 1956. After 1956 the Deutsche Bundesbahn was in need of stronger locomotives to deal with increasing freight demands so the power output of the last remaining 23 locomotives had been increased to 4680kW with a top speed of 100km/h. Due to considerable technical differences they were re-classified to E94.2 (later on this was
changed to class 194.5). After the war 44 locomotives remained in Austria and were renamed as class 1020. Most of the Austrian units experienced considerable modifications during the 1960's.
The E94's that had been located within the Soviet occupied zone were transferred to the Soviet Union and returned to the DR (Deutsche Reichsbahn, German Democratic Republic) in 1952. The
DR arranged for the refurbishment of 23 units, which were mainly hauling heavy freight trains and occasionally heavy express trains. In the west the DB also used the E94's in heavy freight service; however once in awhile they were also used for hauling commuter trains, which, occasionally, only consisted of two pairs of “Umbauwagen” (rebuilt coaches) and thus
the locomotive was heavier than the train. In 1985 the DB decommissioned the last “German Crocodiles” while the DR kept them in service until 1990. The ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) trusted their “Crocodiles” until 1995. Today 15 units of class E94 and 18 units class 1020 have been preserved, some of which are still in operation today and are used in heavy freight service by some private railway companies working every day of the week. It's amazing that these iconic German locomotives are nearly 80 years old and still being used by private railway companies. The class E94 is definitely a legend amongst electric locomotives and for this reason very popular with the model railroad community.
It takes a lot of time and research to create a video so a model has to be exceptional for us to make the effort. The ESU E94 is definitely worth the effort and Reynaulds considers the ESU class
E94 as one of the best electric locomotives on the market today. This exquisite new ESU locomotive is packed with new innovations and technology. The model has a finely detailed metal housing
and frame and numerous separately applied detail parts which perfectly render the powerful appearance of the prototype. ESU has taken into account the prototypical differences of the metal chassis
according to the era, the different number of sand boxes, the realization of wooden and metal treads on the roof and, of course, the type of headlights are distinctive examples of the accuracy
applied to these models. It goes without saying that the headlights are free-standing lanterns. The delicate highly detailed pantographs are fully functional and can be controlled by any DCC or
Marklin Digital system, pantographs will automatically raise and lower and switch position with the direction of travel. The model is also equipped with sensors for situational sounds that
get triggered in curves or when running over turnouts, as well as a LokSound V4.0 decoder with two speakers and a USP unit assuring reliable operation even on dirty tracks or extensive turnout arrangements. Naturally the LokSound decoder uses original sounds of the E94. Like with all ESU locomotives they are equipped with universal electronics with plug-in current collector shoe and universal wheel sets so the models can run on either 2-Rail DCC or Marklin 3-Rail AC Digital. In order to have sufficient space for the speakers and the enclosure each bogie has its own coreless motor complete with flywheels. Four traction tires make sure the locomotive can transfer its power to the tracks and for perfect current pick-up the center axles of each bogie are sprung. This incredible new model is available in Era II, Era III and Era IV. Now let's take a look at this model in action!!

The loco is equipped with SBS 39 pantographs, so the pans should both be up in both directions. SBS 39s were single wiper pans, and locos needed 2 wipers on the wire at all times to reduce arcing. So, the pans switching with direction is interesting, but incorrect. Hopefully, they can be set to both raise and lower together, disregarding travel direction.

Video starts with an introduction as the E 95 .... But then it turns into the E94 ( which is correct ) anyway ESU stands out with their locomotives in every way Lear’s of which is the ability to run on DC or AC layouts not to mention loads of sound and special functions . Am glad I got one and it is worth the price .

Be aware of the very complicate technic inside. For replace an engine you need half a day. It is very tricky to assemble the gear. The soldering points are very small and delicate, and many small parts are to bring in a perfect position, otherwise the housing cannot be proper fix.

Hi! I'm working to a personal project to modify an E94 Era II ROCO locomotive from analog to DCC. I've designed a complete new PCB with 8xAUX powered outputs, added lights in the cabin, top beam and ESU LokSound 5. I saw that the loco presented here has automatic raise/lower the pantographs. Could you please tell me what servos is using and what kind of pantographs is using to be activated by the decoder? I'm looking for 1 month for such pantographs / servos but I couldn't find anything to fit inside the loco. Thank you.

Too bad you will miss out on this model and so many more great models from other manufacturers. Please understand because the English markets are very small compared to the German markets it is a matter of economics. The cost does not justify the expense to create English or French or Spanish instructions. So long you have a list of all your functions and the basic instructions on you how to maintain the model you can easily type the German text in google translator and print the English instructions. Guys like me we never look at instructions anyway so it was never even a consideration but that's just me. Any way don't miss out on great models over a small 10-page instruction manual.

You mean electric locomotive series E 94 or BR 194, can't have both in the description, E stands for the description at the beginning which stands for ELEKTROLOKOMOTIVE, and BR stands for BAU REIHE which means type, model or series. And definitely this is not BR 95 as you mention at the beginning of the movie
