@wilsonowen1731Ай бұрын
They don't know much about damage control. Their initial reaction should have been all about compassion for the people who died - not indignantly claiming the crew were at fault and the boat was unsinkable. And they should then have said they would co-operatate fully with the investigation and await the outcome of the inquiry before commenting further. Filing lawsuits all over the place (including the widow of the Bayesian owner FFS!), and against anyone suggesting there may have been design faults is damaging their brand, not helping it.

The even crazier thing is that they didn’t construct the boat and only bought the brand assets out of bankruptcy. Which would mean they had no liability, and they could say boats built under their ownership have been to exacting standards.

It should have had automatic vent closers set at 42 degrees. I believe our offshore lifeboats are equiped that way, as they can roll right over safely
@woki-toki3988Ай бұрын
yes why wouldn't it have automatic closing at 42 degrees?
@davidorf3921Ай бұрын
Agreed, the moment you make those vents remote rather than automatic it becomes dependant on a member of the crew being able to operate them in time, the lifeboat vents are automatic (and the vessels are self righting) because they assume that in a crisis the people responsible for operating the lifeboat might be incapacitated in some way such as being thrown off balance when the boat suddenly heels over to 43 degrees without warning.
@TrappedinSLCАй бұрын
@@davidorf3921 Also with a sailboat if you actually have a proper knockdown it's entirely possible a human won't be able to respond quickly enough. If you read reports of knockdowns that have happened to other sailing vessels (admittedly mostly a lot smaller) they're not slow gradual things, they're very rapid.
@testboga599129 күн бұрын
Indeed, but the closers were never meant to guard against a sudden roll. They were probably only intended to be closed if they wanted to sail. The main thing that sank this ship was still the weather.
@Phantom-mk4kp29 күн бұрын
@@testboga5991 With such a low safe keel angle it should have been equipped with automatic closers, that is my point. It was designed to be 'unsinkable', didn't put much effort in, did they. I bet they didn't skimp on the Italian marble and exotic hardwoods

That is not the behavior of a company that actually wants to build the best. All they had to do was say "we believe our boats are built to the highest possible standards but we welcome an investigation into this incident and will cooperate fully to establish if there was anything we could have done differently or any different advice we should be giving our owners going forward about crew training" or some such PR statement.

Enjoy your well-deserved time off.. seems pretty obvious , even without investigative confirmation , with the yachts vanishing angle of 42.7 ° In combination with 30 extra tons of ballast ... and open HVAC with operationally open generator exhaust ports on the starboard side... the yacht would sink catastrophically when that strong and unexpected weather and wind event struck the doomed yacht. You can't blame the crew or Captain when they are following protocols under those conditions... Had the yacht been designed with automatic closures that close the venting systems when the vanishing angle was reached, we probably wouldn't be discussing this really tragic event.

I did not know about this new owner ship or even when Bayesian was built, but with this new information I've a complete 180 in my thoughts. @guidosalvi2588Ай бұрын
@@cestmoi1262 I believe it was due to CEO’s fear for the future jobs of the ab. 2,000 (?) employees of the Perini Navi and mother company. And also to the reputation of that Group that risks to move from high to nil due to the apparent enormous and incredible errors of designers and builder for the Bayesian one single and tallest mast (rather than a safer double mast ketch-like solution). Accordingly, Perini Navi’s CEO admitted already two cancellations of similar projects. Congratulations for your highly technical analysis of the causes for this tragedy (I believe the Messina Judges will make use of the results of your technical investigation!). Being a long (72 yr) experienced sailor, mainly as a regatta sailor of Olympic classes (470, Finn, Star) but also as a skipper of some blue water sailing yacht, I think I would rather cross the Atlantic on a Mini-Transat 6.50 than on the Bayesian 54 m sailing yacht with the max. 42.7 degree mast admissible angle. 😉 enjoy your fully deserved break!
