The catamaran Doodles bought has opening hatches on the rear stairs right down to transom step level, leading directly to the electric propulsion system. A few waves in a following sea, slightly leaky hatches and the electric propulsion is flooded. The crew also seem to have decided to sail onto a lee shore and anchor in 4 meters of water in a surf break, then only use 15 meters of chain - no doubt because they did not want to have to pull up manually any more chain with the electrics flooded.

I hope it was properly insured and they honour it, otherwise Bobby is in for a world of hurt, unless final payment hadn't been made. Either way, it seems a mess. To detain a vessel is one thing, but to willfully destroy the property of someone else is criminal, especially when the owner has not been sanctioned at all. As for the catamaran, I saw the video, Bobby read out the complete report and although the boat had taken on water, there was no reason to beach the boat. The boat was beached because the captain did not know how to anhor. While waiting for a tug to arrive the crew anchored just outside the port in 4 mtrs deep water, with winds between 10 - 15 kts and waves around 1 mtr heigh. Captain decided that 15 mtrs of chain !!!!!!! was enough and soon after that the anchor started to drag. Instead of releasing more chain by simply free falling the chain, the crew did nothing and the boat beached. Sorry to say, the initial taking of of water could be blamed on the yard, but the grounding is on the account of the delivery crew, the yard has nothing to do with that. For all of you who don't anchor on a regular basis or don't know how to anchor at all, the amount of chain needed is a mathematical calculation. This calculation is often simplified by talking about scope. Scope of 3 : 1, 5 : 1, 7 ; 1 etc and this means 3, 5, 7 or more times the depth of the water + wave height + distance sea level to windlass. This crew put out a scope of just 2.27 which is not enough to hold the boat in place. And that is exactly what happened, anchor dragged and boat beached. Some of you blame Bobby or the yard, but other than choosing an incompetent crew (which he could not have known) Bobby and the yard are not to blame. The blame fully lies with the captain who did not know how to anchor. Others have stated that the anchor winch did not work (electrically) and although that may be true, you can always free fall an anchor. You take the brake off and the chain will go. If you don't put the brake on in time the complete chain will drop in the water (enough videos onlne about that as well). In all a sad story, complete loss of the vessel and you don't wish this to happen to any owner.

My brother brought back a sailboat from Hawaii in the seventies and put together a small crew. the moment they were over the horizon one member became seasick for maost of the voyage, one was essentially useless, all couldn't prepare meals except my brother. Fortunately, he dead reckoned the Califormia mainland and did NOT miss North America, and landed safely. Sounds like this "delivery" crew was depending on the ease of motor transportation and knew piss all about SAILING a Catamaran. Or watching those tides and flows with having the LATEST technology as their disposal. My Eagle Scout brother was using a Sextant and the UK Marine compass I have given him for Xmas (night vision). He still has that compass!!!

If a Yacht like this was purchased for £20M is it not reasonable to think it would take much more than that to build the same Yacht today? So it might take the same 20M to buy the thing.?

Not that I have much empathy for Russians, but if the individual can't be found guilty and they're destroying his property by neglect, that sounds like a lawsuit for several reasons.

When the boat went onto the beach the waves were of a decent size ( 2 meters stated by owner) and boat went stern to waves hence the damage.

Seems to be a real lack of info on the Sailing Doodles yacht grounding on their channel. Looks like they are keeping it secret. Just a couple of sentences about a "problem" on their latest video but no info as to what it pertains to. ATB regards thanks for sharing.

That new catamaran: brand new on delivery voyage - effectively a sea trial. So a shaft seal fails early, not unknown and quite foreseeable but why couldn't they pump the bilges at a sufficient rate? No portable bilge pump for the voyage or even large buckets? They only had to keep the water below the engine level to keep power and engine pumps up. Looks like a degree of incompetence and lack of preparation. Yes things went wrong, but it should not have ended in a total loss.
@scottnunya115 күн бұрын
With catamaran hulls being narrow, there is not much bilge volume or room for bailing. Probably didn't take much water to create the problem as the engine is about as low as the builder can place it.. Bigger problem seems that the delivery people weren't sailors.

Phi's owner is not sanctioned, despite the best efforts of the last Tory government to cobble together some sort of charges. Because of that, any and all courts should find that the government illegally caused the damage to the boat by denying the owner the ability to maintain it. All costs to return the boat to class should be charged to Grant Schapps and the Tory party, NOT THE TAXPAYER.

That sailing yacht didn't have an electric engine as far as we are aware.
@StarfleetCommand7114 күн бұрын
@@YachtReport If you watch the video you are linking too, you will see that it has two electric engines. One in each hull. And it was drifting for almost a day because the ECU, that was not watertight, was flooded. With diesel engines and a proper ECU, they could have motored to the nearest dock.
