your ability to find the most obscure pieces of media and put yourself through them is admirable. and i can see why this game in particular caught your eye, the art assets and designs look really cool and or cute in regards to some of the creature designs, and some of the gameplay ideas are novel and interesting for a tactical rpg, like the ability to "revive" a puppet as a completely new monster which could, in a better designed game, completely change how you strategies especially if it keeps the "not knowing what your gonna get" aspect...but it seems like the game is too short and too poorly balanced to get any mileage of its ideas...shame, seems like ps1 era games are plagued with interesting ideas but poor execution that stifles it completely (although tbh that can apply to every era of games)

I'd still love to see these kinds of mechanics in a better game, hey. Genuinely unique ideas with no valid ways to push them and build on them.

As someone who thoroughly loves this game and has replayed it a few times, i completely agree with you. It is jank and tedium and inconvenience, but also has this unique charm. You can feel that love was put into this project. It is silly and nonsensical and half the mechanics dont work, but this was someones dream project. Full of raw amateur energy. This game has a certain kind of raw potential that if it was made today, it would be on the same level as Octopath Traveler.

Thanks for playing it so we don't have to. Moving at half speed diagonally is a special breed of jank. Long story short, you tend to move characters using vectors in game programming. However, due to how vectors work, diagonal movement will cause characters to move faster, which is why you want to normalize your vectors, so the character's movement speed will be the same, regardless of the direction you move. I don't know how the devs got the movement speed to be half.
@Caspicum3 жыл бұрын
It kinda makes sense from a chimp-man perspective to move at half-speed diagonally because if the game's grid-based, you're getting two movements for one, effectively, it at the very least makes sense for it to not be the exact same speed, but it feels so wrong. If you're in the business of making games or understanding how they tick, you gotta try the movement for yourself, it might be the worst movement I've ever felt in a JRPG. The animations don't help either, it looks like that dude's speeding around a race track the way his hair blows, but then he's going for a very mild jog in practice. Maybe they live on a mountain and the wind is stupid strong idk

Great video. I remembered playing this game as a kid and decided to give it another shot not too long ago, and oh boy, I wish I'd seen this video before I did lol. I remembered it actually being a pretty good game back then (was 6-8 years old when I had it) and also that the game was pretty short. I gotta say, my inability to read back then really carried this game's story- not knowing what was going on genuinely made playing the game a better experience, it's that bad. I think it also says something about the game that I was able to beat it that young and without being able to read, too. Anyway, I decided to "challenge myself" by playing through the game with only Luca and a single puppet in my party this time around. Long story short, it was still piss easy. The only time I lost a fight was when the main antagonist (emo guy #4, or something like that) decided to walk up and one-shot my roided (gemmed) up puppet from almost full health with a 383, causing me to load the game on the spot. I'd give this game a 3/10 if you can't read, and a 2/10 if you can (not even joking in the slightest). And that's only because the the music and some of the artwork carries it.

I actually had a copy of this game! You see, there were hundreds upon hundreds of copies available at my local Meijer overrun store, so they sold for literally a dollar. A few years later I was discussing the game on a forum for RPG nerds and one other person also played it, but insisted it wasn't an RPG for some reason. Personally I always used spears as my main weapon. The reach improvement compared to the swords was well worth it despite the damage downgrade. Bows meanwhile had such a narrow range of use - can't hit any closer than like three spaces OR more than four? - that I just gave up on them and immediately recycled any monster that attacked with a similar range.
@Caspicum3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah bows pissed me off, I feel like they'd be MORE effective at close range but hey, you do you, game. Also this is 100% an RPG, what a weird stance to take you should slap that dude.

This is a game I used to love playing as a kid. But also a game coming back to it when you're older you really see the cracks. I can tough out the loading screens, I can tough out the slow pace. But man, when even the difficulty is practically nonexistent and magic being as bad as it is, thereby making every battle just get in range and attack leads to really simplistic gameplay. Video hits the nail on the head, it's not a "bad" game, just very.... "mid"? Lots of missed potential for sure, there's so many puppets and gem combinations to evolve and lead to different trees. Though, I say Magic is bad, the problem with magic is actually twofold, it's either so weak it's bad, or so overpowered it's busted. Once your puppet reaches it's final evolution, any and all spells it learns hits *the whole map* so you can spam your spells at the starting location and beat every stage without moving. Reminds me of another ps1 srpg that I liked as a kid, but seeing it now holy crap it's so, so, so bad. If you can you should check out "Hoshigami" on ps1.

@loveandrockets4life10 ай бұрын
I honestly did not think the game was that bad. Is it a hidden gem? No, but it's not a "slog". The game pace moved quickly in my opinion, but then again, I happen to enjoy tactical RPG's and utilizing knowledge gained from previous encounters with said genre made intuitive a lot of what the game asked me to do. I agree, the load times are a bit longer than I would expect from a PS1 era game, you DO become overpowered rather quickly and your "friends" are absolutely worthless other than to play the part of narrative devices, but there is more good here than bad. The music is enjoyable. The battles move quickly and the fact that you can upgrade your characters and save in between each battle is great for those of us who have to get our play-time in "chunks". All in all, I appreciate the candor and comedic feel of this review, but I do have to acknowledge that the game is not as bad as you make it out to be.
@Caspicum10 ай бұрын
For me, it's one of those things where it's like "Man, I could just play Tactics Ogre again and have a blast." which weighs heavily on how I feel about tactics RPGs on the other side. Having a narrative helps a lot too. Tactics Ogre defining classic and modern Japanese tactics games is a toughie, because it nailed it from the outset. The narrative, the weight of decisions, the difficulty, the depth, physically and figuratively because it has height variations for squares. I know it wasn't the first, but it was certainly the most influential given every game since has borrowed pieces here and there, if not outright copied it. It even copied itself with the remake on PSP and later re-remake, it's just that good. wait, what were we talking about?
@N3rv3d4m4g3 Жыл бұрын
Your points are all fair , the only reason I like this game is Because it's nostalgic.
@brentramsten2493 жыл бұрын
i found that magic is actually good when you focus on its strengths, which is 1. the sheer range and 2. the splash. you hit a certain point where hitting less than 3 enemies with a spell is just terrible, but you can often get 6 or more to the point where having two splash casters can really just tear through an entire map of enemies. melee is good, but only if you 1. have at least decent base stats in attack 2, a high speed, otherwise your main guy will just get focused down while you slowly march to the front line and preferably 3. a ranged attack. so yeah that specifically is always better than magic, but that combination is pretty rare, where magic splash spamming monster dolls are fairly common, and usually have enough range that speed isnt much of an issue (especially when your trying to get all the enemies to clump together). also: playing this game as a kid has taught me an exceptional level of patience which has served me well in life. thankful for it regardless of anything else
@Caspicum3 жыл бұрын
I definitely opted for magic as auxiliary damage when I couldn't physically hit an enemy, but even with magic-pumped monsters, you'd need the enemy monsters to neatly assemble. The clustered fighting makes that far more viable than most games but it was still pretty tough to effectively use the broad-casting magicks. That said, healing was always welcome and I put it on as many monsters as I could, because the last 2 chapters absolutely needed it.

I'd love to see similar mechanics revisited in a better game, hey.

I copped this game for $10 (the original price it released at) at Target when I was 12. I beat it back then but can't remember a single detail about it other than a feeling of "that game wasn't good"

This is one of my favorite 'bad' games. I happened upon the game in a Walmart at the checkout, just a stack of them unsecured for 10 USD each. The game is a slog and the story is pretty dull but I absolutely love the art style.

One of my childhood favorites... Yeah it's not very good. Still love that anime opening and a lot of the music though. It's incredible how terrible the translation in this game is.

Don't worry, I still love Alundra 2 because of how much I played it as a kid. Sometimes games are bad in the comfiest ways.

I played the CRAP out of this game when it came out, and I was just a litl'un. I probably beat this like 3 times in a time in my life where I didn't have a patience to beat almost any game.

Damn son. I can definitely see that, there's potential replay value if you care about the monsters and want to give them all a try.

This game definitely did not do very well in the gameplay and has pretty bad writing, but I think some tweaks in all of these factors, the game would've been a smash hit. At least a pretty decent cult following, somewhat remembered at minimum in deviantart or old forum fanart. This game got none of that lol. I think the aforementioned tweaks were very possible if they just had a better writing team and fixed some of the maps, it would have had some serious potential. I like the game myself, I played it as a kid but I didn't understand it. I am only recently playing this game out of curiosity and nostalgia, and even with the very valid criticism as said in the video... it is still decently playable for me. The parts of the game that did pretty well IMO was the style. Even though it was pretty generically very 90s, it's a style I miss very much from those days. It really wasn't objectively bad at all, they did really well with it. And the sprites too are pretty well done. I feel if it did well enough overall, it could've gotten a sequel on the Nintendo DS with the same engine. The other part I think they did great is the stats, evolutions, etc. of the puppets.

I have 3 things to say: 1. Hey Casp, there is a Monster Rancher 1 and 2 port coming to Steam and Switch. Are you going to play them? :) 2. I played Eternal Eyes when I was a kid, I don't remember much, but I liked the nice graphics, it had some charm. 3. 9:51 OMG Look at that green monster's sexy dance moves!!!!!
@Caspicum3 жыл бұрын
You're damn right I'm gonna play them. That said, I have a physical copy of monster rancher and a capture card, so I could play the original and import CDs which sounds a bit cooler. I'm not too sure how the new ones will function, but I'm down for them. also i totally forgot there was a sexy monster, look at that dude go.

All issues aside. I loved this game. I really love FFtactics too. But this game was just a weird oddity. I only beat it once. It's a little hard to play cause of the lack of english translation. I just took a piece of paper and copied the symbols and what they did lol.

Bloody love unearthing repressed memories, it's both depressing and humbling. Depressing because you're capable of forgetting things so deeply, yet humbling because your brain is trying to protect you.

Not really related to the game shown here, but any chance we'll see some Suikoden reviews/content before Eiyuden Chronicles comes out?
@Caspicum2 жыл бұрын
Maybe not before Eiyuden, but definitely at some point. I just beat the Suikoden hard type and was mixing around ways I could talk about it, but not as a boring old review. Every feller and his dog has reviewed Suikoden, but it's such a great set of games, I really would love to talk about it.

I think you are overly negative on this game, like magic has more utility on higher level monsters. It was my first "rpg" game when I was a kid and it fueled my love for them. So as an introductory game in the genre it is almost perfect, pretty easy, not overly complex and moderately fun. It's by no means a great or even a good game for anyone past 15+ years old but for children this is hardly a bad game especially in comparison to most other games for kids that are straight up horrible overpriced cashgrab garbage.
