The last thing we need is another bloody sword user. Cut the entire Fire Emblem cast and put Isaac in.
@tuures.51676 жыл бұрын
@@Caspicum Not sure if you are being serious here, but calling Isaac just "another sword user" is in my opinion seriously downplaying his potential. Any concept of Isaac as a Smash fighter, which includes the sword outside of jabs and tilts plus maybe the dash attack and aerials is a wasted opportunity in my book. At least all specials and Smash attacks should definitely based on the various Psynergies and possibly Djinn powers. For example, his down smash could be Briar growing thorns all around his feet to strike opponents. This would mean that Isaac would be even less of a sword user than Robin from Fire Emblem. And calling even Robin just another sword user is disingenious at best. (Though I do agree that Smash Bros has too many FE characters, but oh well.)
@freejusticehere6246 жыл бұрын
I think what he meant was that Isaac should be added in with intent of fully taking advantage of his roster of moves, rather than him just ending up as a FE character reskin. Isaac alone, if done right, could be way better than the endless stream of FE characters.

It's not Isaac's fault the game is oversaturated with swordsmen. He deserves his spot in the game regardless of how many characters are superficially similar to him or not.

Coupla things you cold've mentioned: - You can save ANYWHERE (not common in Jrpgs) - The ballin mini-games - You can set Djinns outside of battle so you can use your Summons immediately - Every character has their own inventory - The Battle Arena outside of the main game. In the second game I actually spent as much time there as I did in the actual story, combining specific item and djinn builds to see how far I could get. Anyway, glad you enjoyed this game. The Lost Age is often tied for my favorite game of all time alongside Chrono Trigger. Can't say the story gets much deeper but everything about the gameplay is definitely better whether it's puzzles, combat, exploration, super bosses and, more importantly, Djinn experimentation. Few games come close with their customization to be as fun as TLA. By giving you multi-colored Summons and class-changing items (as well as A LOT more Djinn), they encourage even the most class pure type people to give a shot to other builds.
@Caspicum6 жыл бұрын
I had originally planned to talk about rigging summon-spam before you get into battle, and also how I hate individual inventories, but I decided I had nothing overly important ot say about them, and cut it for time. I completely missed the Battle Arena though, what's this about?
@BinaryDood6 жыл бұрын
In the games menu, its the last icon that appears. Click on it and you get to an arena where you fight random monsters you fought throughout the game including bosses.
@Caspicum6 жыл бұрын
Oh shit, I thought it was a multiplayer feature so I ignored it. They really should've made that accessible after you do the story chunks in Colosso, and given you in-game rewards for it. Do you get anything for it? Because there were games on the GBA that did similar, side-content outside of the main game, and it then gave you shit in the actual game. That was rad.
@BinaryDood6 жыл бұрын
Its alson a mutliplayer thing. Unfortunately I dont think there are rewards. But IMO the thing is its own reward, sometimes I pick Golden Sun out of nostalgia but I dont want to play the actual game so the arena comes in just handy. I medle around with Djinn and configurations and wether i should set them or not, the battles are random so its a gamble wether you get a weak enemy or two super bosses in a row. I just think since both GS games are generally easy its really cool that there is another to test you skill to its absolute maximum possible

Golden Sun is so good. I've spent a lot of time trying to determine whether it's my favorite game due to nostalgia or whether it is just that good. In the end, I think it has some problems, but it truly is amazing overall. And I might be a bit biased, but the music is fan-fucking-tastic and just might be the best soundtrack of any game ever made (assuming you include TLA). Sakuraba really knocked it out of the park; coming from someone who has some experience with GBA programming, it truly is impressive what he managed to do. Hopefully we get a 4 at some point. We can hope. Great video!
@Caspicum6 жыл бұрын
It's definitely got a strong OST, it's just a shame we only have it heavily compressed and garbage-sounding on the GBA's shitty sound chip. I would've loved to have heard it on any console with even a remotely good audio system. In terms of audio prowess, I think a lot of games vastly out-shine Golden Sun when it comes to direct OST comparisons, but video game soundtracks are less about the song at face value, and more about where it's used in the game, and how that connects to a scene. It's hard to be like "GRANDIA FUCKING BLOWS GOLDEN SUN THE FUCK OUT" because that's not how vidya music is designed. I do recommend listening to Grandia 1 and 2 OSTs if you haven't heard them before though, they're lovely. Legend of Dragoon got some bangers too.

This is a really great video. It'll seem like weird things to pull out of a video with lots of funny lines, but the visual presentation is really clean and you actually used music as an aid rather just tossing in 6 tracks back to back to fill in the silence. I had asked for a hand me down game boy color so I was beyond words. I only tried golden sun because it was a gift but I was instantly hooked. I can still vividly remember exploring Vale, the starting town while I was walking around outside. We'd had a bad ice storm and it was bright enough outside but not inside. The screen was hard to see on those back then. And I remember not even feeling the cold. I was lost in the lore of that game for many many years. Great series. I'm awaiting a fourth title one day.

Camelot made a very clever decision when they chose to make Weyard a virtual recreation of the real world, with regions and cultures that all have an equivalent on our own planet. RPGs depend on good world-building to make their stories compelling, and rather than making a world from scratch they decided to take the planet Earth and show it through a fantasy lens. The result is a complex but believable setting that makes the most out of the amazing geography and history of the real world. There are only a handful of games that have tried to replicate the real world like this, and most of them (Okami and Mystical Ninja 64 come to mind) only deal with Japan. Golden Sun was incredibly ambitious from a world-building perspective, even if it has very few other innovations. To this day it's still one of my favorite RPGs almost entirely because of that. ...Which is why it was so bizarre when Dark Dawn changed all of Asia and made up a bunch of new countries and races. I mean, fictional Chinese warlords and magical furries? This is why Nintendo only trusts you with sports games now, Camelot.
@Caspicum6 жыл бұрын
The absolute savagery of the end of that comment. No coming back from that one. There're reports that Dark Dawn was dreamed up while the creators were drunk at a party one night, so I think that explains everything. I also quite like fantasy re-imaginings of the real world, a game called Shadow Hearts is set in the *real world* around the time of the first World War, and it's fucking sick. Would recommend based solely on your love for Golden Sun's world.
@kithkin016 жыл бұрын
Please review the 3rd. It's a shit sequel
@cinnamonnoir24876 жыл бұрын
Well, thank you for the recommendation. It would be great to see a fictional World War I story that doesn't butcher it like Wonder Woman did. I think Dark Dawn was about as good as could be expected given the premise. "Thirty years later the children of the original characters have their _own_ quest to save the world" is a pretty bankrupt idea, almost fanfiction level. I really liked a few parts of the game, especially the Indian subcontinent and the silly painted-cardboard reimagining of the first game at the beginning, but frankly after the Golden Sun rose at the end of The Lost Age there was nowhere for this story to go. The game also suffered from being really easy, not that I ever went to Golden Sun for challenge. The first encounter that gave me any trouble was the Ancient Devil, which is a _bonus_ boss that you fight after the game is over. I didn't even sweat during the *final boss* encounter, and that's not bragging; it's just a really easy fight. I bought it used for eight bucks, and it was totally worth that. And you can still get Djinn and watch people cooking yogurt chicken, so thumbs up all the way.
@givecamichips6 жыл бұрын
Golden Sun was my first traditional RPG that I finished, and I like how it's getting some new love still. Mixing your Djinn is way better in The Lost Age since you get a larger pool, and if you end up with a really trash pool of Djinn for your 4th character they have class change items that reward having all types of Djinn on one person. The Lost Age really feels like the second half of Golden Sun. The story is nice to see from the other side, especially what's happening with Jenna and Kraden AKA the main reasons Issac started his quest in the first place. It's quite cool seeing how Issac operates when he's an actual character. His party gets a pretty nice reputation in story if I remember. The final boss theme is possibly even more rad than Saturos' battle theme, which is a certified banger.

So glad I stumbled across this video and it's so great to see it get as many views and likes as it has, this game deserves way more love. I had a rather unique experince with The Lost Age as I had never played the first one so when I picked it up at the age of 12, I had no idea what was going on and how the game worked as I had never an RPG either. This resulted in me having work everything out myself which as a 12 year old, I didn't get too far but I would return to the game every 2 years or so and progressively understand and over come the games challenges more and more as I grew up. It was one of 2 games, the other being Abes Oddysee, I had as a kid that I didn't immediately understand which compelled me to keep playing them to learn more and kept them fresh in my mind through the years. I started the game when I was 12 and didn't manage to complete it till I was around 19 and still play it to this day. Due to this, this game has a very special place in my heart and probably wouldn't be the way I am without it.

I'll give the opening bit this: It does a good job establishing just how thorough the devs were in crafting the world of Golden Sun. Now, I'm not sure how many people know this, but before you head to Kraden's, you can head down to the Inn. Once inside head upstairs and you'll find a certain masked man looking out the window. You can also talk to a person talking about a good looking guy with blue hair, and the two warriors staying here. It adds some nice world building to know that the villains are essentially staying at the inn

By far and away this is my favorite Gameboy game and likely my top rpg of all the ones I've played. The music is spectacular and I just enjoy the simple thrill of adventure in the game. I'm glad to see some rekindled interest in the series and I can only hope that one day we'll get another entry. Or like some other commenters have stated at least a character in smash or some other shared property. Or maybe they could just release updated version of these game for the switch idk that might just be me.

Awesome vid, man! Golden Sun (or more correctly, The Lost Age, played the first part right after) was my first JRPG. These GBA gems are still my favorite JRPG! Love it so much! Would be a dream come true to see a new installment on the Switch. Dunno how likely it is considering Dark Dawn's success, or lack thereof.

There's always a possibility. There was 8 years between The Lost Age and Dark Dawn, and it's been 8 years since Dark Dawn. I'm not saying GS4 confirmed, but it'll likely happen at some point.

If you play and 100% the first game, when you start the second game make sure to transfer all your progress so later when your new team meets the old team, your old team will retain all their stuff from the first game. You got two ways to transfer, through passwords or through link cables. I usually just do th link cable transfer it, it's more convenience. My only two gripes about the second game is that your old team joins the game a bit late so by then it will be more like an afterthought, also you can't go back to all the locations in the first game even though some were still present in the second game.

I do have to say, one of the only reasons I've remained so consistent is because people ride my arse if I'm not. Say what you will about Digimon and its fans, they keep you motivated. The only thing anyone asks is that you try your best, so hopefully your positive attitude will take you far. As long as you've got passion and something that's almost a good idea, you can pursue and refine it, and you'll have something workable in no time. Even a half-baked idea can introduce a new perspective. That's always something to keep in mind. The trick is to never give up, keep improving, and laugh along with everyone else at your own failures. A lot of people get caught by that one and get mad on the internet. This is how you lose the game :^)

Regarding the excessive use of menus, you can set a psynergy as a shortcut to the L or R buttons so that you don't have to open it. Pretty handy for psynergies which you constantly use like Move or Reveal, or even for a dungeon specific one like lift. Also for dialogue, I don't remember if this was available on the first one or introduced from the sequel onwards, but you can actually hold L/R and A/B (I don't remember the actual combination) and you can fast forward the dialogue.

I can see some indie game having a gimmick where like Golden Sun, you can choose not to embark on the adventure and save the world... but instead it leads to an alternate storymode where the world gets taken over and now your character is older and goes on a revenge story after your family gets murdered, and you regret not having stopped this in the first place.
@Caspicum6 жыл бұрын
That'd be sick. I think a lot of games toy with that idea in good/bad endings, but it's not a fully-fleshed out concept in that regard.

The opening to Golden Sun reminds me a lot of the opening to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Both games start in the middle of a storm and send you off to meet imminent danger. You also get to name your protagonist before starting each game. Curious parallels indeed.
@Caspicum6 жыл бұрын
2D Zelda games have always started incredibly quickly and very strong, I love them for that very reason. The 3D ones are so fuckin' bloated.
@ferdinandavila-soto72336 жыл бұрын
Breath of the Wild also starts pretty strongly. Within seconds, it sends you off to explore and learn things about the world on your own. The starter area is effectively a microcosm of Hyrule, and it works well as an invisible tutorial.

4:50 I didn't feel like the Sol Sanctum segment was "text-heavy" and "tedious" at all. It serves perfectly to re-introduce the antagonists AND their apparent leader Alex, and impose upon you the question of why a character (Felix) whom you thought dead, has now returned but is also helping the baddies. All while blending in some gameplay into it.
@Caspicum4 жыл бұрын
It was pretty bad, all you did was hop over rocks and occasionally get some text blurted at you. Great concept, they just made it really awkward and stilted. It's also weird that Felix shows up almost immediately after he 'dies', like barely even 30 minutes after.

While I do so, I'm going to try and look up videos and articles saying why it's so great, or in some cases, just about Golden Sun in general, because they're surprisingly few-and-far between. :( That's pretty much how I found out about this video, and you've summed up how hard it is to find addition information on this series in general. Thaaaanks so much for the video - it was really interesting even tho I know the game super well. ^^ I think you're be delighted with The Lost Age - it takes the original formula and gives so much more in terms of story and scale of events. I always loved the first GS, but the second one just blew my mind when I first played it. Oh, and about the Dark Dawn - yes, it is the worst installment. But it's still an enjoyable adventure and there is plenty of passion and effort (wonderful visuals, custom djinni designs). It just made some really hurtful mistakes, like the difficulty level or weird story development (I really believe that DD was written with a sequel in mind). Still, worth playing.

It was easily the technique that did the most damage throughout the game, but I also checked the Wiki and it says it's the strongest single-target Psynergy. Pretty sure it only cost 7pp as well, which is a bargain. I think that point was more about the limitations of using a single-elemental build, and how I should've mixed elements instead of sticking to a pure build, but I could be wrong. It's been a while since I've watched it.

You mentioned not being impressed about using the menu to cast psynenergy during puzzles, did you know you can map one spell to each shoulder button? I had Push set to L basically the entire game and switched up R frequently, though mostly mind read or Reveal. It really sped things up and made sense to use the much underused shoulder buttons on the GBA. Also this game sold the GBA to me, I have so much nostalgia for it. I got a Gamecube and GBA Player for it too, man... Good times.

I can't remember what I said specifically, but I think my issue was having two shortcuts for more than 2 psynergies. I remember having Mind Read bound to a shortcut for sure, otherwise it would've driven me crazy.
