CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Reliving the day they first met, and knowing that it will soon be gone, Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clem (Kate Winslet) decide all they can do is enjoy it.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The second feature from director Michel Gondry (Human Nature) finds the filmmaker reteaming with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman for this off-the-wall romantic comedy. Jim Carrey stars as Joel Barish, a man who is informed that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of their relationship erased from her brain via an experimental procedure performed by Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Not to be outdone, Joel decides to have the same procedure done to himself. As Mierzwiak's bumbling underlings Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood) perform the operation on Joel -- over the course of an evening, in his apartment -- Joel struggles in his own mind to save the memories of Clementine from being deleted. Kirsten Dunst, David Cross, and Jane Adams also star.

The answer Joel gives, “enjoy it.” It’s so beautiful and tragic. It applies to Joel’s current situation, sure. But I think it applies more broadly to relationships in general, especially when you’re talking about younger adults. Nine times out of ten, the relationship is eventually gonna fall through. And on some level, we know that going into it. So, how should we behave in our relationships knowing that they will eventually end in heartbreak? Enjoy it.

"One of my favourite things when I was a kid was my Huckleberry Hound doll." When they meet after the erasure on the train, which we see at the start of the movie, he doesn't know who Huckleberry Hound is (see Clip 1/11). This is no accident. The fondness for his doll had become so intertwined with his love for her than when they erased Clementine, they erased part of his childhood.

Luke Barnes i've actually got an diferent interpretation from you guys, you see, as he is reliving this memory he describes to her what he was thinking, when she grabed the chicken or when he saw her in the distance, so when she told her name that's probably the first think that came to him but he din't said it, on the train when he meets her again he doesn't said anything either because he is too shy so thats how he actually acted here and what he though the other scene on the train. This movie is too beaultiful.
@leraygun
@leraygun 6 жыл бұрын
that's a very good interpretation. Also possible =]. I'm worried that because he tried to hide them in his childhood memories, when they found it and deleted it, they deleted the childhood memories too. That's very sad =/

I think the saddest part is realising that he finally concedes defeat when he says "enjoy it" He had tried so hard to hide her and protect all of his memories of her, but it's at this point he finally understands that it's all over and instead of fighting off the machine, he should just savour every last bit of their remaining memory together. The last memory still intact being the first time they ever met at the beach 😭❤️

I knew a great girl once long ago. We loved each other. The last time we ever saw each other we walked alone together on the beach at night. Fifteen years later we briefly connected again through a mutual friend. The feeling was still there. Although she was happy in her present life she told me that she still loved me. I told her I still loved her too. This film will always and forever remind me of her and of that long ago night on the beach. No, I would never want to erase the memory. Great film!!!

When he says "Enjoy it". I remember the last day me and my daughter spent together before I sent her to college. And she says "hey Daddy, what are we going to do today before I leave?" I thought about Jim at the time. To say enjoy it, it's much more than just words. It's the day, the memory, the time and most of all, the togetherness. What a powerful movie. Jim and Kate did a wonderful job. I never watched it again. Now I have 1 grand child and another on the way. My daughter has found her a good man and Me, I just enjoy it all. My ex wife wasn't a good mother, I raised my daughter and I thank the Lord I did great. Without him it would of been hard.

I didnt see this movie until almost twenty years after it came out. It is so therapeutic for not only any romantic memories (or lack thereof) I had and failed at, but it also guided me to go back to all the bad, abusive memories I had from my childhood and allowed me to counsel and console my childhood self in those horrible moments. It's still a work in process but there is nothing that has consoled me and allowed me to let go of those awful, parasitic memories in a constructive way.

I remember it was our last day in Paris. We had just lovely day visiting Le Musee d’Orsay, walking through a flea market just outside of Paris, drinking wine of course. I had taken a job in Hamburg and she was returning to the states. I had got the feeling that our relationship was coming to an end. I had done everything to delay the inevitable but it was finally the last day. Her flight left at 10 AM from Charles De Gaulle which meant we had to leave by 5 to make it there comfortably. I stayed up most of the night flooded with memories, both good and bad. Our time back home, all nights we spent together, all the trips we had been on. Her family, her dreams and aspirations. It really is the small things, you remember, the sounds, the smells, the talks. She was the best person I’ve ever met. Through and through the best by far. I really do hope we meet again, because as it stands I don’t think I can ever forget her.

"and then you took it without waiting for an answer. it was so intimate like we were already lovers." the way he starts off saying it, dumbfounded. but then laughter starts bubbling up from inside him, almost hesitantly at first like he's surprised it's even funny. something he might have thought to be rude or obnoxious at first became something he had become so fond of without even realizing over time. now that he's reliving it he can see the warmth in the gesture and in clementine herself. not to mention the way he looks at her. charmed. bruh this movie..........

The scene where Joel and Clementine watch the circus go through the streets was made up on the spot, as the film crew and cast happened to be working nearby, and Director Michel Gondry decided it could work well in the film. The part where Clementine disappears suddenly, is one of Gondry's favorite moments of the film, as Jim Carrey didn't know Kate Winslet was going to disappear, and Gondry liked it because Carrey's face appears so saddened. When the sound blanks out in the final film, Carrey is actually saying "Kate?"

But then I began too have opportunities, just opportunities you know, I still never been with someone but still, it was cool because something broke inside of you, all these falses images of yourself you know, I knew I could make things by just being... Myself and I felt great. There's attraction for everyone and If you just try to let go of your fears, and just let everyone and the world view who you are, things will tutn great... I know It's not an easy thing, I'm still working on myself right now, it's a long, difficult process for us but at the end, it will turn great ! Don't dwell on your fears and false conviction, you can be someone good and cool for someone else... You will see... Just don't lose hope, I believe in you, You will find your Clementine !

We met at the wrong time. That's what I keep telling myself anyway. Maybe one day, years from now, we'll meet in a coffee shop in a far away city somewhere and we could give it another shot. 🥺

the most beautiful movie I've ever seen, I don't know how many times I've watched it, and would rewind and watch these tiny little moments like this repeatedly, with Jon Brion's perfect music. I wish there were more movies that made me feel like this, that evoked such a strong romantic, fantasy, yet harsh reality at the same time, like thinking of your own memories. I don't know quite what exactly it is about this movie, but I'm in love with it.

I remember meeting a Dominican woman off the street. She wasn't street trash at all. Very articulate and just moved to my state. I was so reserved like Joel and I regret not pursuing things further as he did in this movie. And she was lonely at that. Just wanted someone to interact with and I fucked it up by not keeping in touch. And this was 2004. REGRETS, MAN.

One of my favorite things about this movie is the eternal feeling of their relationship. The more you watch, the more you begin to realize they've met each other, then erased each other from memory multiple times. It makes you think in the context they have their issues, but it's their destiny to be together. Like this continuous flame that gets lit, extinguished, and then lit all over again, one time after another. They'll never stop meeting then separating, ever, because the more you watch you begin to see they've already done it multiple different times, not just this one time made clearly into the movie, but over and over again. This scene being the example of that.
