So apparently the director has confirmed the voice in the post-credit scene was Blade. YIKES! Congratulations MCU! You found a way to introduce Blade that left me disappointed rather than excited. Why on earth would you choose a voice cameo to introduce Blade? I'm baffled as to why they would introduce that character in such an ambiguous way that relies on the audience knowing the actors voice, knowing he's cast in the role, and having their brain ready to do voice recognition on the spot....to be excited in the moment. 🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂

You could have solved many of this movies flaws by having Kit Harington as our human eyes and ears into the story of the Eternals. He could be the outsider like us who is discovering this new cosmic world for the first time.
@king_supreme11023 жыл бұрын
That was definitely one way it could’ve gone. I think the way it did go was unique though. It felt like you were getting a look into gods’ lives, and it felt like it was completely from their perspective in that way, which I like. It was like the humans were out of the room, so we were getting a unique perspective on us.

Kingo wasn’t being an ass and saying he didn’t want to help. It was more of being scared and not wanting to face Arshiem for killing a celestial. Also feeling that they aren’t in the place to decide to stop what has been decided by their god. He just stayed in his place
@DD-qm1hq3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Seems like I disagree with a lot of things Sean thinks on this one and this was of of those things. Kingo literally said he love humans but by stopping the emergence they prevent millions of other planets (like Earth) and creatures (like humans) from being created. It's a one vs. many situation. I don't think he's unlikable because he thinks that, especially because as he said despite he believes in Arishem's plan he's not willing to hurt his friends. He's basically chose to be neutral, which (for me) was probably the most understandable thing to do (as an Eternal).

@king_ben._.04883 жыл бұрын
I find myself agreeing a lot with this video. My biggest problem with the film for me is that it sort of makes our heroes and villains from the previous MCU films feel somewhat irrelevant or useless. Our heroes have fought countless battles, and have succeeded in against even the most threatening villains like Thanos, but you're telling me this entire time some celestial space god thing could just crush our planet with the flick of a finger. I guess the scale of this film makes the rest of the MCU feel as if no matter how those films played out, our heroes that we know and love would never really stand a chance against a being that powerful. Almost as if them succeeding in the previous films is just irrelevant, as the planet was doomed to die, and there was absolutely nothing they could do about it even if they wanted to.
@brianng34143 жыл бұрын
I totally agree and disagree with you. Just like fights you have with family or friends or neighbors or schoolmates or co-workers are irrelevant compared to earthquake or COVID. These other fights seem petty in comparison and that is what the Celestials/Eternals are supposed to make us feel.

My initial thoughts on this special marvel film: The good: First of all, I’m really glad that this is not a “marvel” movie, in that it didn’t follow the typical “the making of a hero” type of story telling in past marvel films, in that it didn’t feel like a commercialized film. Second of all, in terms artistic representations and cinematography in the film, it probably ranks among the highest in marvel films. It also posted some interesting questions, for example: Could one life be righteously sacrificed for the possibility of many others? What does it mean to be human? Is it worth saving? The uncertainty: The story telling of it felt a bit mundane throughout, even the climax didn’t felt that exciting, the “weight” of the film was spread so evenly that it seemed like the a story told in the background, it could be the intentional, but I’m still not sure about how I feel. The bad: A lot of the verbal exchanges in the film felt artificial, like the characters are forced to say something profound; This is also the case with emotional expressions of a lot of the characters, as if they were forced out of them, so what was meant to be deep and powerful expressions were superficial and pale, the prime example of this is the relationship between Sersi and Ikaris. This directly resulted in me not being able to sympathize with the resolution of the conflict in the end, where Ikaris remembered the life he lived with Sersi, it wasn’t nearly as impactful as it wants to be, or that the character felt. Some elements in the film dragged on for too long, like the deviant that showed up at the end of the film while they were fighting already, it felt so unrelated and unimportant to what’s going on at the moment and the core conflict of the film, they should’ve finish with it before that point in a more meaningful way, given the amount of coverage it had.
@thoarnejones68053 жыл бұрын
The best thing about this movie is the conflict "Should we defy 'God' to save humanity?" Its a great concept that can have amazing implications for why earths heroes are so important. However the fact that only Ajak(Selma Hayak) mentions Bruce's snap that brings back everyone snapped so irritated me. The fact he did that alone legitimizes saving humanity.

My biggest problems were that they didn’t explain a lot of stuff, like the characters’ abilities, and some stuff just happening conveniently just to progress the story. Also that deviant that turned humanoid was completely out of nowhere and not needed at all. I did like the fight scenes and the big twist of Ikaris being a villain, and some of the characters were pretty likeable, although I felt that Sersi was pretty boring for being the main character. This should've been a Disney + show with 10 50-minute episodes with each episode focusing on a particular Eternal. The first episode should be longer so we can see them all-together for the first half of the episode with the second half of the episode focusing on main character of the episode. Same with the last episode. It felt like they were trying to do way too much in a two-and-a-half hours. It honestly felt too bloated and not fleshed out enough at the same time, and that is not a good thing. This was the MCU's version of Joss-tice League (although I still think this was definitely better than the theatrical release of Justice League)! Something that doesn’t make sense to me about the Eternals is that they were created to kill the deviants (who were acting too much on their own free will). Why then we’re the Eternals given free will and MORE POWER THAT CAN CHALLENGE EVEN THE CELESTIALS? The celestial could’ve just stopped sending or making deviants on a single planet and NEVER MADE THE ETERNALS in the first place. If the celestial shave the power to create deviants and Eternals then they also have the power to destroy them, so why not destroy them and start over? Also, why doesn’t anyone else in the galaxy know about celestials? Surely SOMEONE would know… Also, why is Sprite not punished? And why does Ikarus destroy himself????????? He had a change of heart????? I haven’t been this frustrated with a movie since BvS 😬

I had my fair share of ups and downs with the film, but the more you think about it, the more the film fell apart. I agree with the logic of ambiguous morals and desires of the characters, and how the only true villian would be Sprite. My beef is with Icarus. What was his motivation and desire? He loved Circy but left because the truth about knowing that the people they were protecting were going to die and their memories would be wiped would leave someone very closed off to others. Out of anyone who was told about a way out of their fate, he should have been the most excited for a chance to break the cycle, not ne the twist villain who wants to be miserable and blow away his one chance of existing as he wants. The Eternals might not die, but by being mind-erased is equal to them dying, which was why Gilgamesh sacrificing his life to guard Thena for centuries was so powerful. Had he not, she would have "died", which the Eternals didn't want. I also feel that they should have had a bigger reaction than "oh bummer" when they found out that their 7,000 years of existence were built on a lie, and they would be erased in a week if they didn't do anything. That should have been their point of conflict from there, and about if they could make it worth surviving and sparing the planet, or letting the emergence happen and have their existence erased and sent to repeat the cycle again without any knowledge of anything before. If they had shown Thena's memories of the past world, it could help motivate the Eternals to take a stand for these people after seeing others that they had also protected being obliterated. I loved the characters and costumes, and the diversity worked for me, but the diversity in plots and subplots, motivations morals and lack thereof made this film a glimmering yet lackluster story.

The problem with today’s audience that despite their complaints & bitching that all Art now are the same (i.e. music, TV, movies, theatre, etc.) …the Truth is THEY DON’T WANT TO BE CHALLENGED. What they REALLY want is the SAME-O, SAME-O. THEY REFUSE TO GET OUT OF THEIR “COMFORT ZONE”. BUT that’s what Art does…good or bad. IT CHALLENGES YOU. It should challenge your Senses, your Perspectives, your Points Of View, your Belief System, your Idea or Notion of where you think your place is in the Universe. That’s the BEAUTY of Art , whether you agree with it or not.

I think people are milking it, Eternals was a great film and no matter what you say it was one of the best MCU/comic inspired movies to be released. People don't like it because its different which is fine, that's your opinion. Also people keep saying how it doesn't make sense, it made perfect sense to me. Adding a mute, child and other diverse characters was great, I loved it. People need to realise what they need/want. If you know what I mean, you can't always have what you want. That's my opinion anyway

I liked it, in concept. The visuals were fantastic and the sense of scale was palpable, especially in the end with the Celestial. The story the movie was telling was great, although I personally would’ve made Phastos be the traitor, I feel like it would fit his arc better. My biggest issue was the writing and acting. I didn’t really feel anything when Ajax and Gilgamesh died and some of the dialogue was…iffy. Especially the scenes with Icarus and Circie, those were so awkward.

Eternals is...fine? There are good elements here, but it feels like Marvel tried to cram way too much in here by telling every character's backstory AND trying to set up a bunch of stuff for future MCU movies on top of the main story. A thought crossed my mind as I was leaving the theater: what if before this movie had come out, Marvel had made a Disney+ miniseries following the Eternals' conflicts with the Deviants throughout history? Each flashback scene would be a full episode, and that would give the screenwriters more time to flesh out each characters' backstory and worldview and the dynamics between them. Then the movie would be focused on the present day story, and the audience would presumably already have that background understanding, giving the emotional moments (most notably Ajax's and Gilgamesh's deaths) way more impact while also giving the movie more time to tell this specific story and set up future MCU movies. It's definitely a stretch to suggest that Marvel would do this, but it definitely could have fixed most of the problems with this movie specifically.

I guess this is one of the MCU movies where being a comic book nerd really helps because I had no problems at all following the story. I also think the negative reviews helped because they tempered my expectations and I actually enjoyed the movie. It was wonderful and I have no idea what all these critics were watching. The fact that the eternals were divided on whether or not to stop the Emergence gave it significant emotional weight in my opinion. I'm getting tired of all these MCU movies were the hero is just right because they're right all the time and no matter what happens nothing changes their mindset. I appreciated them acting like real beings and wrestling with their decisions. That's also comic book accurate. In the comics Ikaris never betrayed them but they did wrestle with whether they should continue serving the Celestials or not.

Hey Sean. As a huge MCU fan myself, Eternals really let me down. That’s why I appreciate this review. As easy as it would be to give Marvel a pass and just say “it wasn’t great but it’s fine”, you sat down and logically explained why the movie wasn’t good. And it was NOT good. To me this was good enough movie but really disappointing. I really liked most of the action, the visuals are really cool, and I enjoyed some of the twists. BUT omg the movie really frustrated me with a lot of things. There are way too many characters and I didn't get enough of my characters. I honestly have no idea how the Eternals were created and a lot of things make no sense. I also think that the whole thing with Celestial creating other Celestials using the population of the planets and stuff felt really frustrating and really confusing. The movie is also not structured properly and the twists and reveals left me really confused. This was also the first MCU final battle that I didn't like. It is really messy and the conflict is just all over the place. I liked the twist with Ikaras and it was honestly the only part of the movie I felt emotionally attached to but I think that they dropped the ball with that in the third act. I don't dislike the movie but It was really frustrating. Probably like a 7/10 for me.

I absolutely LOVED the eternals. And believe me when I say this I did not care for the Eternals whatsoever, earlier when the reviews came in I was like huh I'm not surprised. But WOW I loved every Character's dynamic with each other, I myself being from India really enjoyed all the scenes with the Indian characters, I also found both sides of the argument about whether it is ethically correct to stop The Celestial from being born really compelling, and I just bought into the whole setting of the film in general. I think it's a reasonable reaction to not care of about this movie as it is something very different from what we're used to with the MCU, I myself only watched this movie only as it is a part of the MCU but man I really loved it.

I'd like to say that The Eternals was a good movie yet it does struggle with developing characters, rushing emotional moments and plot. However I'd say I did like the stakes and the world building. The difference between a casual MCU movie gave me some enjoyment. I'd say that overall it's a 7/10...but Harry Styles at the end credits and a BLADE voice over bumps it to a 10/10. 😁

My thoughts / opinions / counter arguments. No disrespect :) What I disagree with: The characters are supposed to be introduced in the flashbacks. I was already interested in them and I had questions most of which were answered later on when we reached them in present day. Some Eternals are sent for the 1% of the time when they are useful. The celestials don't seem particularly short on resources. Not everything is meant to be about humans "why am I like I am". Some of it is fascination with how the Eternals are like that. Reminds me of a film like once upon a time in Hollywood. You enjoy it scene by scene not for the plot. I already knew Ajak was the leader when she died. I also knew how powerful Eternals are. I was pretty stunned when she was suddenly dead and her death carried a sense of sadness for her future flashbacks and at that time I had already seen her as a motherly figure. The characters existence is at threat. They don't react how we would because they're not human at all. You need to try to understand the eternals perspective. They desire to serve their creator. The earth is short and temporary in the vast scale of things and the decision to save it could almost be selfish. Also Icarus is not really a villain. A lot of marvel comics fans will love the crazy mess of ideas. It's all down to preference. Phastos sent humans on the wrong path because they corrupted the power he gave them. It was not worth it to help them thrive and develop. He didn't want to help a race that would use what he provided to destroy itself. What I agree with: The main character could have been better Third act was weak in some ways Deviants not becoming good was weird Phastos not wanting to help Eternals to save his family was weird. Sprite betrayal was a weird plot thread although I didn't notice it at the time. Need to rewatch to maybe understand.

Completely agree, I think Sean focused a lot on the “we’re humans, so those who threaten humans are the bad guys” argument, I really understood both points of view and I think it’s really valid that Sersi still has doubts in the end. Also, as you said, Ikaris isn’t really a villain. I do agree some details could have been better explored, like Phastos, Sprite and the Deviants. Even Ikaris to some extent. But in general, pretty impressive film, I really liked that it didn’t follow the usual formula.

I got out of the theatre watching this movie bout an hour ago and man, I didn't think I would like it that much ! Now sure, I agree that the story in itself isn't excellent, but what really struck me is the beauty of Zhao's cinematography. Some shots and locations were really beautiful and gave me chills (The Hanged Gardens of Babylon and The hand and the face of Tiamut rising out of the Indian Ocean was real scary albeit very majestic). Another thing that I found very interesting is the character building. Let's face it, Zhao had nine different characters to work on and some other side characters, so it didn't seem like an easy task, but I think she succeeded with a good chunk of the Eternals, but Sprite and Ikaris didn't really connect with me, I really didn't care about what would happen to them, but the others gave me emotions that I had never felt in a Marvel movie before ! Ajak, Sersi, Thena and Gilgamesh, heck I even teared up during Gilgamesh's death... And one last pro of this movie is the humanity it has, sure, we're thrown into a buttload of exposition, but I really liked this movie because it didn't rely on action and fight scenes like other MCU movies. I was more intrigued in the dialogs the Eternals had between them than the actual fight sequences. Now, what I didn't like in this movie (and I'll be very quick with this one, this already such a huge comment, sorry) is the action that was wayyy to much jam-packed with CGI, Ikaris and Makkari during their fight scene looked so goofy and the generic running-gag MCU humour that was in it. Kingo's Valet was a really annoying and absurdingly stupid character for me and I just didn't like the punchlines and the screentime he had... Also, the fact that they killed of Ikaris so easily was frustrating, like yeah it's poetic he flies off into the sun or whatever but, really ? Like the guy turned out to be the real antagonist in this movie and you're just gonna kill him off like that?!? Anywho, in a nutshell, I enjoyed it, had a lof of fun, and in my maybe unpopular opinion, it's to me the most gorgeously shot MCU movie

I liked it, but I didn’t love it. It was ambitious, but I thought the storytelling was clunky. It tried to do too much, I think it would have been a lot better as a Disney Plus series. Sprite becoming human was by far the most emotional part for me. Some of the other emotional moments didn’t resonate with me the way they were supposed to because we hadn’t spent enough time with the characters. The post credit scenes did absolutely nothing for me.

I liked the movie, inspite of that I think your criticisms are pretty valid too, like why was this character mute or kid like..why killed off ajak before she's introduced, why kingo bailed out before final Throwdown? Sercie was pretty much least interesting & one dimensional character also,I agree... But central moral conundrum of movie (is earth worth saving with cost of an eternal being born)I found it to be pretty interesting, would you kill billions evolved humans so that trillions other life forms can be born... If you're all too powerful should you interfere in humanly conflicts? Given they won't evolve as they should if you do so??? These ideas are interesting imo
@christopherbarber52133 жыл бұрын
I really did like this movie. Sean, This is like the second or third time that you’ve mentioned the movie that you didn’t like Because you didn’t feel like the morals were clearly defined. However I find that closer to real life. We like to think that we’re in a world Where evil and good or obvious things (like Captain America good/ hydra bad). I also like watching a movie where it’s clearly defined as to the morality that’s a play. However, in real life things are a lot Less obvious and often times not as easy to tell who’s right and who’s wrong. Understanding this is the fact helps me to really appreciate movies like this at a deeper level because I find it more close to actual human experience. Obviously that’s just my opinion and we’re not on the same place here. However I think you should ease up on calling that a bad movie. I don’t think it’s bad Storytelling the way you and many other reviewer’s are acting like it is. This Director I believe told her the story the way she did because this is how she has discovered reality to be. I found it refreshing and consistent in that way. It’s OK for us to disagree it just kind of feels like you’re throwing out the thought that people do you kind of act that way with inconsistent morals and behaviors which they do all the time.

I saw it yesterday, and I liked it, but I didn't love it like I hoped I would. I really liked the acting, score, the VFX and cinematography, action sequences, and I praised the uniqueness of it. However, I agree that the story structure was so messy, it had hit or miss humor, the character development wasn't that great (which makes the deaths in the film not work), and I don't understand why action sequences constantly go from IMAX shot to normal shot then back to IMAX. The ideas of the story were absolutely fine, but it wasn't structured so well, and could've been done a lot better. This should've been either a longer movie, a two-parter, or a miniseries. I appreciated the things it did, and the pros saved some of the movie for me, so in the end I liked it but I wished I loved it. I'm seeing it again really soon, so hopefully I like it more.

I agree with most of what you said. What also made me mad was the inconsistencies of their powers. One minute ikaris is killing a deviant with his lasers, and literally the next deviant doesn't take any damage from him whatsoever. Same goes for Thena when she's fighting that deviant at the end, where she stabs and slices him a bunch of times and then suddenly she can one shot him. Then there's Sersi who just decides in the middle of the film that the rules for her powers don't matter. And that's just 3 of them, I haven't even started with Gilgamesh and the Bollywood guy, who have really powerful attacks, but only use them once a century or something.

I'm not going to try to change your mind about anything, but I think you misunderstood both Makkari and Sersi's characters. Makkari is not "mute'. She is deaf due to the fact that she produces sonic booms, and as a side effect she does not speak. She HAS to be deaf due to her powers. Also, deafness is not a setback--Makkari can still communicate, just in a language you can't understand. It's also demonstrated that she can tell when someone's speaking based on vibrations. Sersi's power exists because her job was not to fight Deviants, it was to help the humans by helping with weapons, irrigating the soil, etc., etc. That's WHY Ajak made her the new leader, because she knew that Sersi would do whatever it takes to save the humans.

The biggest thing that holds this movie back from truly being something special is the fact that it doesn't fully commit to any of the great ideas and questions it brings up. I feel like Chloe Zhao wanted to make deep thought provoking drama, but was constrained by the fact that it still had to be a comic book marvel movie. For example, the deviants hate the eternals b/c they feel like the eternals are the real monsters. When I was watching it I was like, "YES, let's explore that". Then they don't. They bring up that really interesting perspective from the villain, but don't explore any of it. That's just one example. Everything from the celestials, deviants, questions about humanity, and some of the eternals characterizations were all really REALLY great ideas. But they never took the time to actually explore anything beyond just the surface of these great idea. I feel like that's what so frustrating about this movie and why it just didn't connect with a lot of ppl. You can't just bring up questions about is humanity worth saving and never actually dive into that. It just leaves you with an anti climactic feeling.
