My favorite line in the movie was when *spoiler* Sersi tells him that "the Deviants have a conscience now and that makes them dangerous" and Druig responds: "No, that makes them us." It's a great way to reference how comic book Druig was allied with Deviants but here, they stuck to his hero's arc but made him a character whose empathy allowed him to understand the Deviants.

Love your review! I feel like it's way more balanced than a lot of people who are dogpiling or those who are mindlessly saying they love all things Marvel. Only place I disagreed - I feel like we got plenty of glimpses of Sprite wanting to be older, enough to foreshadow her turn at the end. 1) She pretends to be an adult woman at bars so she can flirt with men 2) Kingo mentions that he abandoned her because people noticed that she didn't age after a few years 3) Sprite wistfully looks at Ikaris every chance she can and is in love with him 4) She asks Kingo why did the Celestials make her into a child. Her main personality trait was hating that she was stuck as a child.

During ikaris and serci wedding scene, every eternals were smiling, except sprite. She was heartbroken.
@KapitanBuggy6052 жыл бұрын
@AM3OBA yeah, that scene went by fast.. On my second viewing i picked up few more "mundane" or simple, unassuming scenes that can actually be re-contextualized once we knew the whole story. Immediately after the wedding flashback (return to current timeline); 1. Sersi was lost in thought, smiling, deeply reminiscing the good old times. 2. Ikaris was at the backseat glancing at her, his facial expression hard to read, but I believed it was a face of guilt. On second viewing, we knew it was not only because of him abandoning her, but also for his lies, and the murder of Ajak. 3. Sprite was seen sleeping, her head against Ikaris shoulder. They were both at the backseat. At first this might mean nothing, perhaps just a sweet moment between siblings. On my second viewing it hits me that the scene might as well be her happiest, blissful moment, having the person she loved just to be at her side (after few thousand years separated). That made it bittersweet for me. For me Eternals is rich with small vulnerable character moments like this, which is its actual strength. I found the scenes more endearing than its plot and world building. Quite frequently a scene linger silently around two characters. No words, just emotion. Not coincidentally, a deaf character is readily present here, with her scenes necessitate us to slow down and focus on her expression, gesture, and read the subtitle carefully. To read the atmosphere. For those who really, really love this movie (me), i think this is the charm that hook us in. So much so that i wonder, if Eternals the movie is stripped all of its connection to Marvel, promoted as an indie project by A24, emphasizing on the family/humanity drama before all the bonus spectacles, would audience be more emotionally ready to embrace this movie? Because in another timeline, this might well be the reality..

I agree too, and eventhough she was my least fav character but I cant blame her - its not her fault she became so bitter that instead of being matured, her stunted physical age actually trapped her to behave like a juvenile SPOILER - she did not hesitate to stab Sersi eventhough she knew Sersi was one of the few who understands and accepts her. Sersi was gracious and forgiving that she helped Sprite to become a normal human.

Eternals is a deeply human film I’ve been sitting and thinking about the film and I’ve started to feel emotional on just the themes and characters this movie presented. I was fortunate to watch the film early in a theater here in NYC and after a full day of letting it marinate, I have to give some thoughts. This movie’s cast is phenomenal. The fact that they have representation from different nationalities, races, ages, and sexual orientations in a way that feels natural and real (not to mention an actually deaf actress playing a deaf character) is truly a triumph. Now, the story matters more than just a casting. And the story is full of human elements. It’s about suffering, powerlessness, confusion, purpose, companionship, and hope. In a world where we’re all so divided, the movie takes that to show that people are still good and worth being hopeful for. You see the worst of people but also the best and they show the genuine love the Eternals have for people and each other. The conversations are rich and thoughtful so when we see our characters arguing, we feel tense and maybe not even sure who to support. Thats ok. That’s human. We don’t have all the answers and the Eternals don’t either. But they’ll move forward while also struggling with their own individual vices because that’s what it means to persevere. You might love the characters in one scene, hate them the next, feel annoyed with them, sympathize with them, understand them, and care for them. They are multi-dimensional and full of complexity. I was heavily invested in these characters in a way I’ve never experienced in an MCU film. Zhao understands the human experience and she brings it to these god-like figures. For those who have watched it, I hope there’s at least something that made you think as you leave the theaters. There will continue to be polarizing views on this film, but it just shows that we’re all passionate about this beautiful universe.

I definitely liked the movie. I will watch it again in theatres. I think I will love it after more viewings. There is enough depth to it to warrant that and personally I don't "see" it all the first time. I've come to learn that a lot of negative reviews are coming from people's prior expectations. Some people are really going into this with demands and mad when they're not met. I don't get it. My attitude especially for Phase 4 is to just enjoy the ride, whatever it is. Most Phase 4 projects have been different. There is a formula to all onscreen stories and Marvel movies have their own particular formula, but Phase 4 is doing it's best to find more variety within the formula. This is want I want. I don't think it should've been split into 2 parts or on Disney+. You bring up valid flaws. It's not perfect. Most comic book movies don't even attempt to introduce more than a core of 5 major characters. So it's ambitious and it works. I don't think it was dense. There are definite connections to the larger MCU. Other than The Black Knight setup they went a different route, subtlety, no on-screen cameos like before. They basically explained the origin of the Ten Rings in a scene without mentioning them. The Rings have a definite cosmic connection. The news channel that reports the earthquake is WHIH UK, a branch of network that Christine Everhart worked for. I'm curious about the emerald tablet that seemed important to Makkari. I wonder if that matters. Spoilers: I saw the Ikaris twist coming because of the 2nd trailer. The scene between Ajak and Ikaris shouldn't have been in the trailer. I was expecting that scene earlier in the movie. I'm right there with you Hector, when Ajak died that surprised me for sure. So I thought maybe the scene was cut but I was confused because the information seemed important. The longer the movie went on, the more I realized how important that scene is. So then I was like "Ohhh" when I realized Ikaris was the only other person in the scene. Then I figured it would be a flashback, either Sersi will see it as memory from Ajak or Ikaris will confess. Madden's performance to me was stiff (or like Agustin said cold). At first, I saw that as a flaw, but now I can see it as a deliberate choice by him and helped create a suspicious vibe like Adam said. I share Agustin frustration with Sprite that her attack on Sersi was swept under the rug. She was basically rewarded in the end. However, they set her storyline right away. She was pretending to be an older woman flirting at the party. Then it's revealed she's been telling Dane about Ikaris because she is jealous of Sersi and in love with Ikaris. Again subtle storytelling, likely because they knew they couldn't give it more screen time with all the other sub-plots. But then Kingo just came out and said it before the Ikaris reveal.

About sprite at the end... I'm sure only cersi and druig knew about the stab. Not a fatal wound also, just enough to stop Cersi. Cersi is soft hearted, compassionate and understanding enough to be forgiving. Druig perhaps just dont really think it matters at the end of the day. They surely have bickered and argued and gets into each other head enough for the past 7 thousand years, closer than family, and some "surprises" can become relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things.😅

Yet they did connect it in subtle ways by mentioning characters like Thor and the events of Infinity War and Endgame. I wouldn't say it's in my top 10 but it doesn't deserve the bashing it's been getting either.

It looks like it's mostly just critics that hate the movie. The Rotten Tomatoes scores are 48% by critics and 84% by audiences right now. It's not the biggest disparity, but a 36% difference is still rather jarring. One complaint I saw was that they should have set up the Eternals like they did Avengers. But the Avengers was set up by giving four characters from different backgrounds (including a god from another realm and a super soldier frozen for decades) their own movies first. This movie was ten characters from the same place and time. The only other option was to introduce it as a series, but so far they've only given shows to character *after* establishing them in the MCU. It would have been a bigger risk to introduce them as a tv series.

I absolutely loved the look and feel of this movie and think Chloe Zhao was the absolute right choice to direct it. I think in the hands of another director that most of the location shots would've been cgi and I think that wouldn't have helped give the movie the scope and 'lived in' feel that this movie has. This is by far one of the best looking MCU movies so far. I was also surprised at how 'human' the eternals came across given their god like powers. If you look at other MCU characters, even the non super powered ones, they still seem to be a step above 'normal' people. In Eternals, when they're not using their powers, they do just seem like normal, regular people. On that note, this movie had a surprisingly gut wrenching moment that was a bit unexpected. When Ikaris is blasting Druig into the rock in the third act, Makkari sees it and lets out a cry. As she is a deaf character it is the only sound she makes throughout the entire movie and it was heartbreaking. It really hit me for some reason and I felt myself tearing up a bit. Over all, this is a different looking and feeling MCU movie and I personally think that is a good thing. It is a breath of fresh air for the MCU that I didn't know I needed until watching it. I can't wait to see it again and to see more from this team. I do hope that Chloe returns for at least one more time to direct too. I also think that Salma's Ajax can easily return, as can the other fallen Eternals because remember, the Celetials create the Eternals so that can easily explain their return.

To be fair, Marvel could easily bring Ikaris, Gilgamesh, and Ajak back by way of resurrecting them. As the Eternals in the comics do have a habit of respawning. Not to mention, the film took a significant amount of time to have arishem show off those premade eternal bodies and the fact that he had the memories of every eternal stored away within the world forge.

Remember the Celestials have all the Eternals’ memories stored, so they could easily recreate them and dump their memories in, but probably only up to before they died

I fucking adore this film. Like, I need to see it a couple more times before I’m confident about this, but it might, MIGHT be my new favorite MCU movie…which might by extension make it my new favorite film of all time.

Guys!!! Doesn’t this movie make you look at Avengers: Infinity War differently?? Hear me out. When Eros arrives on the Eternals ship, and it’s revealed that he is the brother of Thanos, and he reveals the same sphere/orb that Sersi is in possession of, it implies that he may be an Eternal as well. Now here’s the kicker. What if Thanos, because if his Bro being an Eternal, knew of the Celestials and their cycle of using planets energy to birth new Celestials, sought to wipe out half of all life on the universe with the infinity stones to delay the Celestials eventual destruction if planets? And not because planets were using up all of their resources?
@lexis44902 жыл бұрын
When Thanos talked about the destruction of his planet, there were missing part of how there are no beings left. It does felt like Thanos knew other planets could be destroyed more then just over population.

Interesting theory, my only counter is that Titan was empty by other means separate from the Celestials. I still can’t get over the idea that we have Thanos and his creepy brother Starfox in huge mainstream blockbusters! I never could have expected that! lol

I don't understand how people can call this movie complete and utter trash as if its as bad as The Room or something. I'll give you the fact the pacing can feel awkward at times, but it's hard to make a movie that is divulging this amount of information in 2 and a half hours. For what we got in my opinion they did a great job. Especially with showing Cersei's connection to humanity, they really did make it about humans as a whole. Man that second post credit scene made me lose my shit. I love that we got to hear "you know who's voice" it was so perfect as a tease.

I think you guys have very open, unbiased discussions when taking about these films. Many other creators on this platform are just throwing this movie into the mud and not appreciating it for what it is, trying to call it bad simply because it doesn’t “fit” the marvel cinematic universe that we know and love. People have such high expectations for these films, and they should to a certain extent, but a lot of people are acting really childish and just hating on the movie because it didn’t come off like other marvel films, and THATS OK.

Really enjoyed the movie. Preferred it to Black Widow but found Shang Chi more exciting. I can see why some people might not love it due to it moving away from the regular Marvel movie style. But if you take it as a stand alone movie its just an epic scale Sci-Fi/Mythic epic. Gimme more of that super speed VFX Marvel

This was so bad. I almost walked out and asked for a refund. I was sooooo disappointed. No emotional connection whatsoever. I understood their objectives, but the director struggled to make me care. So you braid a girls hair, drink beer with humans and wear their cultural clothes so that means you care for humans? No relationship building whatsoever. They love and care for humans and I NEVER felt it. Just AWFUL! Couldn't wait for it to end. Hallow and void. I didn't believe that fake romance either.

if you’re sad that Ajak and Gilgamesh died and those actors won’t be in future MCU movies…one word…ETERNAL. or two words…World Forge or another word…Multiverse
@moondevell2 жыл бұрын
don't get me wrong, I LOVED ETHERNALS ! and so... some people found it weird that two people of color were the first to die in Eternals , but they loved Dune...a white savior story where most people of color died to protect their white prince...? interesting, to say the least. PS: Come for me if you must, but be reasonable end logic about it, please.
@crazytaru2 жыл бұрын
I think Salma Hayek can return with the World Forge. Ajak can be rebuilt and have a slightly different personality, and so can Gilgamesh and Ikaris
@antoniobrooks11132 жыл бұрын
Another point to notice about the diversity aspect. We have Ikaris, portrayed by a British white man, who wants to continue the violent colonization enacted by the Celestials. The fact he’s stopped by people of color who stood up for humanity, who just happened to be deaf, gay and female was also really unique to watch. Him not being able to kill Sersi and flying into the sun to atone for actions was really well done.
@davidramirez10212 жыл бұрын
Considering Eternals are manufactured, and how in the comics Eternals get resurrected every time they die, it'd be easy to bring back any or all of the dead Eternals. One visit to the World Forge, just sayin'.

The reviews this movie has been getting are quite honestly baffling to me and I've been trying to figure out why. Is it because this is the first Marvel movie some of these critics have seen? Or is because they've always disliked the MCU and this was the scapegoat? I get that this goes deep into Marvel lore, places even I'm not familiar with, but to call the worst Marvel movie of all time? A dramatic, visually interesting story with a diverse cast and a story about believing in humanity directed by a woman of color? Boy, they sure chose the wrong one to hate. It's been called baffling, overstuffed, mediocre and convoluted. Is it a coincidence that this happened with Captain Marvel and Black Widow too? Anyway I got none that. I got a beautifully shot family drama that balances plot and action quite well. Did it lag at times? Sure, but I was never, at any point, disinterested in what was happening. At some point I actually wished this movie was a show so I could spend more time with these characters and we could unfurl this massive plot even more. Stray observations: - Did we see the first sex scene in MCU history? - I lept out of my seat when the Ikaris reveal happened. - I actually thought Druig might be the one to turn evil. I'm glad they didn't cause he's the Fonz of the Eternal. - The Gilgamesh death was heartbreaking, I loved his dynamic with Thena and I knew right away they going to kill him. - I expected Angelina Jolie to be a big focus of this movie and surprisingly she didn't overwhelm the story. She was a stoic badass. - I kept thinking about the Peter Pan analogy on the ride home, it's perfect. - Sprite is such a tragic character, it made sense that she sided with Ikaris. - When Ikaris flew into the sun at the end it took me a second to get it. - BLADE! MIDNIGHT SONS! STARFOX! PIP THE TROLL!

I honestly think Chloe Zhao put the Ikarus/Sersi sex scene in as a litmus test. Would people flip out over the sex scene, or would they flip out over the same-sex relationship? Genius, really. Also, because all of the Eternals are living constructs, there are probably duplicates of them out there. All of the dead Eternals could come back.
@Notretsam2 жыл бұрын
finally watched this movie and I enjoyed it, feel like the best description for this movie is "it's act one of the Eternals story", we haven't seen act 2 or act 3 yet. Chloe Zhao did a great job getting all characters where they needed to be in one movie. Also, the Eternals were created and memories were stored, every chance Ajax and Gilgamesh can return. I agree with Adam, this should've been 2 movies with 1 being history and 2nd being present day.

I get why some people would think they bit of more they can chew, but in my opinion, I think its a case of what they were setting up was worth more than telling one, solid, cohesive story. And there have been a couple MCU movies like that, where you can tell that the purpose of the movie wasn't really its action or story. The function of them, and eternals, was to serve as a vehicle for what's to come. But I liked Eternals. I thought it was good. Nothing more than good, but it was good. I appreciate that it was different. I appreciate that it had a different tone, and while I love what MCU has built, I hope we can get a more diverse tone, when the right title calls for it.

What are the chances Phastos created the Ten Rings? When they were said to be several thousand years old in Shang-Chi, and who else was around at that time that could have created them? Deffo wasn't a human invention. I think Bruce said in the post-credit scene they weren't Vibranium, and looked older. Some plot details to work through but I'd say there's a good chance there were of Eternal origin.
