Fr tho. You pay for the mockups cause most artists take time to draw the design for you. Its to ensure you have more of a say on what you like and dont like. If the artist is fairly compensated for multiple designs & mockups then sure, AI doesn't need to be a part of the process. The concepts for Ethan were ridiculous and he is right to get a refund too. There is a reason that artists would use AI at this stage, however, and I understand it completely as someone in an adjacent industry. It's totally fair to use AI with a new client (ideally well-edited and it being discussed prior) before sending through proper concepts once an agreed-upon style and expectations are mutual. It's not about being lazy or lacking the skill to do the actual tattoo - it's about protecting themselves and getting proper compensation for their labor. At the end of the day, AI in this context can save artists being ripped off. It's extremely common that artists don't get compensated for all of the work that they do. The reality is, a massive amount of people take advantage of and don't value the time and effort it takes for a tattoo artist to do initial designs and concepts. Some people will expect detailed, amazing and time-consuming designs (that are EXACTLY what they described), and they will still turn around and refuse to pay for the concepts. I've also heard tattoo artists talk about scumbags getting initial designs, not paying for them/getting a refund and taking the stolen designs to someone cheaper. There are some scummy artists and designers out there, but most people are honest and are just trying to earn a living.

also as a fyi- any tattoo artist worth their salt wont go tattoo you in a podcast studio. When risking infection and blood-borne illness, its always best to go with a clean, responsible shop not focused on insta-fame. Most of those celebrity tattoo artist do tattoos so small and intricate that age horrible and charge people astronomical prices. Find a local shop that caters to the style you want, make sure they show you the finished product so you can ask for any changes before they put it on your body.

In fact, designers are far more apt to use Illustrator or InDesign, because it’s suited for layouts, where as PS is suited for more suited for Graphic Artists or Photographers. Having said, that you’re absolutely right - I’ve always seen a tattoo artist with an IPad and Procreate or the like. The fact he said Photoshop is odd - for execution would be entirely overkill and clunky. That was a very good detail you pointed out about it being further suspicious.

If you use a transmission electron microscope you'll see Kevin Spacey's face on my middle nipple but otherwise it's invisible. cost me $15,000,000 to rent the microscope and get the special 1-atom-thick obsidian needles flown in from North Korea, but so worth it to not have to walk around with a full-size Kevin Spacey on display across my naked chest

I would normally expect to see the sketch from my tattoo artist when I arrive at the studio to be tattooed. Saying he would "figure it out" in person is weird but I have never heard of an artist sending a sketch ahead of time, that's their art they want to sell you, not send you for free. That being said, some of these are pretty funny. But it's not realistic to expect him to send his actual art ahead of time, imo

Several artists will send a sketch prior but they charge for it, which is understandable. Then theyll make changes if necessary and charge for another sketch. Yeah, everytime I've gotten a tattoo, I approved it day of so I dont think its THAT weird that he said they would figure it out. Most artist charge extra if they want them to draw something up before the tattoo. I've never gotten a tattoo where I saw it before the day of the tattoo. You tell them what you want and then day of, they come out with a stencil and you either approve it there or make changes. Artists typically aren't gonna send their artwork for free and sketches are separate from the tattoo. I understand both sides.

Don't haggle on a design, find a new artist!! A reputable artist will tell you when they cannot complete a tattoo, and even recommend an artist who is more well-versed in your preferred style.

I’d say instead of doing virtual consultations, find an artist with good reviews and a portfolio and style you like and do an in person consultation where they put together a rough image of what you want with you there. Even with photorealism there are artists with different specialties and pieces can take on different emotional tones. Photorealism can also include additions like the terrible tux and top hat so if you were to frame it you could discuss with the artist how you would like to.

As a tattoo artist.. this is hilarious but also sad as you see how some stupid ass artist get a lot of recognition and jobs for not doing a good job.. he must be really good with execution or something because he sucks at actually being creative and working with the idea of the customer.. and placement and well taste tbh. no wonder he wanted to see you in person he’s probably the kind that manipulates people to get a tattoo they’re not really happy about. It’s actually not that easy to find the right artist for your wish. Some people believe you just go to any artist/studio and you’ll get what you want. It's not unusual for tattoo artists not to provide their designs for customs until the day of, and they'll make any changes you want while you wait. I think for a few reasons - they don't want you to take their work to someone else, and they often draw it up the day before/day of. Just saying that ALONE is not really an indicator of a good/bad artist. I've only seen my flash tattoos before appointments - none of my custom ones. I did have to ask for changes to one which was (and should always be) 100% ok by the tattooer. Sometimes they'll show you in person if you set up a consultation, but you'll probably have a hard time finding someone who will just send it over to you. And they should be happy to explain all of that to you rather than try to pacify you with a bunch of AI generated pics. The AI stuff and lack of communication IS super sketchy so you made a good call. There are plenty of good photo realism artists out there - there is absolutely no reason to work with someone you aren't comfortable with!

If a tattoo “artist” needs to use AI to come up with a design, they definitely arent a reliable artist. Given the fact he had refrences and a description of what Ethan wanted, theres no excuse for this crap. Ill happily pay an artist for drawing a design for me because it is a part of the process of their job. If they cant even draw it themselves, i wouldnt trust them to tattoo me. Both my tattoos were flashes but they they are skilled artists who create their own work. You should be able to bounce ideas off your tattoo artist to come up with a more personal tattoo. At the end of the day its going to be on your body and you should have the final say.
