In this Chemistry video in Hindi for Class 10 we explained physical and chemical properties of some important carbon compounds like, ethanol and ethanoic acid.
Ethanoic acid :
It is commonly called acetic acid and belongs to a group of acids called carboxylic acids.
Carboxylic acids are weak acids.
5 - 8% solution of acetic acid in water is called vinegar and is used widely as a preservative.
Melting point of ethanoic acid is 16.7°C.
Boiling point of ethanoic acid is 117.9°C.
Ethanoic acid is a colourless liquid.
Density of ethanoic acid is 1.05 g/cm3
Reaction of ethanoic acid with a base : It reacts with a base and gives a salt and water.
Reaction of ethanoic acid with carbonates and hydrogencarbonates : It reacts with carbonates and hydrogencarbonates to give rise to a salt, carbon dioxide and water.
Esterification reaction : Ethanoic acid reacts with absolute ethanol in the presence of an acid catalyst to give an ester. Esters are sweet-smelling substances used in making perfumes and as flavouring agents. Ester is converted back to alcohol and sodium salt of carboxylic acid on treating with sodium hydroxide, which is an alkali. This reaction is known as saponification, because it is used in the preparation of soap. Soaps are sodium or potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acid.
Ethanol :
Ethanol is commonly called alcohol and it is the active ingredient of all alcoholic drinks.
It is a good solvent. So, it is also used in medicines such as tincture iodine, cough syrups etc.
Ethanol is soluble in water in all proportions.
It has a burning taste.
Melting point of ethanol is -114.5°C.
Boiling point of ethanol is 78.5°C
Ethanol is a colourless liquid.
Density of ethanol is 0.79 g/cm3
Reaction of ethanol with sodium : Ethanol reacts with sodium leading to the evolution of hydrogen.
Reaction of ethanol to give unsaturated hydrocarbon : Heating ethanol at 443 K with excess concentrated sulphuric acid results in the dehydration of ethanol to give ethene.

What is the purpose of adding phenopthelene to NaOH
@exception431
@exception431 Жыл бұрын
NaOH is a base phenolphthalein changes base to pink colour to show that when we add acid to base, base doesnt remain base as acid neutralises its effect thats why pink colour becomes colourless as now the sol is not a base anymore
