it represents , in a very Americana sort of lens , the ceiling above her bed wasting away , revealing the stars (physically and metaphorically as part of the tattered flag “waiting for the stars to fall through”) , left to rely on her faith in this country that has ultimately failed her already . independence and hope despite a clear setting of waning safety and shelter . mother cain , ms. anhedonia , white silas , we cherish you . anthems for the broken .

Looking past the fact that this song is actually about incest, my dad overdosed after my (now ex) step-mother, who was abusive to both him and his children (myself and my sister,) He lived, thankfully. The lyric, "And there's been a stain in the carpet, since our father took those pills, and nothing has felt real since then." hits really hard. Eventually, my dad, myself and my sister all were in such a deep state of depression that we started letting our childhood home fall apart, hence the relatability of the "stain in the carpet." The abuse we endured caused us all to have incredibly dissociative personalities, and our biological mother passed away last year, one of the few people who made my sister and I feel a bit of hope in a world that seems so dim. I love you, mother Ethel.
@gregorygekas1200 Жыл бұрын
This beautiful song is a story of incest. Two siblings. Their mother died at birth and their father took his own life with pills. Growing up alone in this unhealthy environment having only one another they started to fall in love. "THEY LET THIS TOWN FALL DOWN AROUND US LIKE WE ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WOULD": the society suspects and judges! ALL THESE DREAMS OF VIOLATIONS STARTING COME TRUE: The girl confesses that only with him (her brother) feels safe and although she knows what they are doing is wrong DEEP DOWN SHE DOESN'T WANT TO SAY NO. They don't feel embarrassed but they feel FILLED WITH DIRT: They can't fight it and this urge is destroying them emotionally and socially, that's why she feels that THEY WERE BETTER OFF DYING WITH HER (THEIR MOTHER) AT BIRTH.

It takes a lot of talent to make a beautiful song out of a horrific situation like this. But she absolutely pulls it off. Other songs that are kind of similar are heaven's only days down the road by Shelby lynne, Nebraska by Bruce springsteen, and John Wayne gacy by Sufjan stevens. Those ones are all about murder instead, but it has a similar vibe of creating a beautiful piece of art out of a horrible situation

This is incredible. I'm fast becoming a super fan of her music.... Interestingly, I'm usually not that captivated by lyrics. I'm a musician myself...and the instrumental aspect of music, the timbre, the actual _sound_ is what normally sucks me in. BUT...a big part of my love of Ethal Cain's music is the lyrical content. It's SO good, so evocative and full of images and ideas. The music itself is also excellent....often simple, supportive, with this uncanny gothic sensibility that is hard to put to words. Her music somehow reminds me of Twin Peaks.....just the surreal dreamlike slightly dark _vibe_ of it all. It's kinda cool to be so captivated by LYRICS given how unusual that is for me. This is genuine poetry.

@@Umbrey_Dunctum it's not an issue of sharing to soundcloud per se, but rather what music. as of a few months ago at least, she was okay with people sharing all the demos that she had released under the "ethel cain" name; it was stuff released under her previous project/name that she didn't want to be shared. of course, now that she removed all the demos from soundcloud, it is probably hard for newcomers to tell which is which, especially since ppl uploading the stuff she doesn't like do so under the "ethel cain" name:/ sorry, i know this comment is from awhile ago.

Crazy that you say this. I grew up in rural Minnesota my dad died and my mom ended up moving into a huge house with a family of fundamentalist christians who had a church in their basement. there were about 6 or 7 VERY large families (anywhere from 5 to 10 kids each) that were part of this insular comunity that pretty much shuned the outside world. It was pretty much a cult. But her music really reminds me of how i grew up and the people surrounding me at that time. I was in my teens the first time i saw a movie or heard music that wasnt christian and played by a member of the group.
