Abiy is neither democrat, liberal reformer nor visionary leader but only pretender and fledgling dictator and demogague, if psychotic figure. Second , he has faux sense of infallibility besides an affinity with spritual extremism and believes of all strange and paranormal things. On top of that, his policy moves are erratic, incoherent and he makes things and policies almost on the fly in overnight. He has propensity for double talk, deceit, duplicity, exaggerating of things and lack of human and leadership empathy for public and victims of his policy blunders. Whether these serious character flaws are deliberate and by design to evade any accountability for his mistakes or stemmed from lack of deep-seated self confidence or other psychotic mental disorder remain yet to be seen. These deeply flawed leadership and personal characters came into light and in public view almost one year after he took the power. Let me mention two or three things , among others, that caught lot of people off guard and convinced them that he was not an alright , honest, deliberative, insighful and pensive leader after all. One example was when he declared the disastrous war on the TPLF group in the Tigrai region that caused millions of causalities and displaced hundreds thousands of others, not to mention ruinous impact it has made on the whole national economy, and with no solution in sight yet. Another strange episode was related to the morning he woke up and ordered to be trashed the national currency notes with few days in time span and even publicly ordered the military and police to loot and confiscat citizens and anyone who found with the bank notes. Another lunacy behavior and unbecoming incident was the day he dreamed of getting sea port, gave an ultimatum to all neighbor countries and signed next day an illegal fiat document of MoU with Somalia's nothern region' s seperatist clan group and demanded to be finalized within month and without doing slightest reflection of its legality, validity , the international norms and diplomacy , regional stability and other repercussions.

Thank you Moges for inviting Tom to your podcast to discuss his new book! Your buffet of ideas is increasingly becoming a mainstay of our public discourse. Kudos brother! I never doubted Tom’s intentions and honesty in reporting about Ethiopia and I believe his book is an important addition to understanding contemporary Ethiopian politics. However, his analysis & prognostication on the big issues have been demonstrably way off the mark, and the lack of humility in his new book is flabbergasting. I mean, this is the guy who proclaimed to the world that the Ethiopian army was totally routed in Tigray and there is going to be a bloody fight in the streets of Addis Ababa! This is the guy who parroted TPLF propaganda lines long refuted and still failed to see that the Tigray war was the choice of the TPLF and continues to portray the PM as a villain of the conflict. I wish Moges held him to account for his deeply flawed analysis in the past rather than discussing his pet theory about the expansionist tendency of Amhara nationalism (dah! which ethnonationalist movement is not expansionist?) and the structural causes of the Tigray conflict (the war is going to happen regardless of the attack on the Northern Command? By whom, really? How could he still fail to see the distinction b/n preparing for an inevitable war and preparing to start a war?)

Great discussion and I look forward to reading Tom Gardener's book. Your discussion about the defining characteristics of Amhara nationalism is interesting, and I buy Gardner's perspective that there is a lot of 'mine is yours and yours is mine' stuff to state it very generously. If someone thinks that 'yours' is not matching 'his', the best agreement you can forge is mostly 'yours is yours, and mine is mine'. It is a mindset of the North and the South. This is on the top of a flagrant irredentism.

I just finished reading Gardner's book, first very expensive, maybe I bought the hard cover. The book is well written and researched but it appears to be Tom has a vendetta, revenge for Abiy and TPLF. He was not fair to Abiy and TLF at all. I noticed he was harsher against TPLF and Abiy again and again and refused to give him the slightest credit for both. Was that intentional?

Missionaries during Tewodros ll came to Ethiopia to gather information under the cover of their religion. They wrote books about Tewodros and his rule which are full of a lot of biases.Their relation with Tewodros was not good, and they expressed that in their books. What i mean is that they were not able to show us the balanced picture of Tewodros. I want to see Mr Gardner the same way. He is highly biased in his assessment of the country. I don't think he assesses the political and economic situations of Ethiopia with an unbiased mental set up.

You should have asked Tom why the western media including the economist supports Ethnic federalism in Ethiopia. The only way Ethiopia can win is by supporting Fano. Victory for Fano! Victory for Ethiopia!!!

Brother Tom ! If politics is your cup of tea stay away from Ethiopia since there is no politics in that land since 1974. Check their vocabularies Cadre/ Central Committee / polit bureau/ struggle/ mother land ....are few among those buried together with Stalin. Finally with all due respect I don't think you can predict " Abiy" move since he is inspired by some weird spirit that tries to amalgamate different faiths into one channel and deceive the entire population hence you can not write a statement let alone a book about Abiy's actions just dwell in other African countries politics.

One more thing: I wish this banal phrase he coined for the PM, ‘Pentecostal Putin’, is not going to catch up. It has neither descriptive values nor nuance to it! It is not even an apt caricature for derision! But it makes you wonder: from Abiymania to this? Could it sink any lower?

Both Abiy and TPLF regimes deserve little to no credit for achieving anything tangible whatsoever. On the contrary, they should be scrutinized over every single issue that they falsely claimed of achieving something or somewhat fixing an existing problem for the better. I am afraid there is none. They only exasperated and inflamed of the existing societal and intra- and inter-ethnic cleavages and did an immense damages on the politico, economic, security and social fabric of the whole country in the process.

It is a nice discussion however u didn't ask him about why the western in general have solidarity with TPLF and ignoring the massacre conducted by TPLF in the Amhara & Afar region. Why do the western support ethnic Federalism?

It is odd he assumed current regional boundaries as legal soveregin territories and assert confidently that the Amharas are expansionist. That needs more strong argument than a cursory question

I wish I was there...this is one of the second "banda" to deal with...MOGOS...let us be open, Yesterday it was William Davison...and Today, it is Tom Gardner. Keep in mind there is a reason I am here!!!

Shit Talk instead of Hard Talk! This agent calling himself a journalist can’t be a stake holder in any discourse about Ethiopia. Is never impartial and of course favours to talk about problems than solutions. Abiy Ahmed or TPLF must thrown away in the dustbin of history. The interviewer lacks credibility.

Both William Davison and Tom Gardner are installed agents/paid foreign actors. Moges is not that nonsense/ignorant not to know this... He even can do some google clicks to see the trends...He knows what he is doing and he is directly collaborating with them by not only inviting them here, but contributing articles to their platform. I don't know what he is up to...but, it is all about time that will answer all this...the pattern analysis will continue...

Its unfortunate that you can't see anything beyond your idealistic, non-existant nationalism. This this why the country future looks gloomy precisely b/c we have dozens of people like yourself that can't form any critical thought.
