the three apeals ethos -apeals to the viewer trusting the person making the aguement -Trust worthy,kowlageable, well meaning. pathos -apeals to the viewer because of their emotions, puesuading them to believe because they "care" -joy,hope, or sadness (dying dogs) logos -apeals to the viewers logics and rationality, *makes sense* -facts, figues, thought out reasoning.

I met a girl my freshman year of high school. She was the new girl in my physics class, and she sat all by herself. I still remember the day I first saw her; she was an isolated island in a sea of familiar faces. Beautiful. Stunning, Unique. That day I told my table of friends that I was switching seats and I promptly got up and sat with her. I didn't have a plan much less any real reason to approach her other than the fact I hated seeing someone socially excluded. I introduced myself. And I made her laugh. As some months passed, I confessed my feelings for her, and she didn't feel the same. She exclaimed she thought I was gay due to my social openness LOL. Alas, I fell in love with her and little by little I expressed my fondness through small actions of care. I wrote her poems, visited her, and tried to playfully hold her hand as we rode the bus together. I remember that one time, in a fury of passion, I prepared a poem for her, and I walked all the way to her house to shower her with love but was too nervous to knock on the door. I waited on the curve a few hours hoping she would come out, hoping that she would emerge and hoping I wouldn't have to face my anxiety. I eventually gave up and rose to leave. As I was walking away, she arrived in a taxi, out of pure coincidence. She hadn't been home all along, but she showed up just in the nick of time. And so, I read her the poem. I still remember her beautiful smile and her blushing rose cheeks. A few weeks later I was the only friend she invited to her sweet 16. She looked like royalty. Eventually, we grew closer, and we began doing homework together, we would exercise together, and we would text day and night. We fell in love.... Four years have passed since then and all stories must come to an end. Everything beautiful must wither and die..like a rose that has lived its life and has reached a point of inevitable end. Fortunately for us, our story has just begun. Her and I live together in a small apartment by the beach, and we started classes at the same university this year, albeit via zoom. We're doing our best and plan to get married by the end of the year. We will live, love, and die together. But after that I was on a coma after all:

-ethos(using a well known and trusted person/celebrity to advertise, making it easier to convince the audience. Example: *Nicki Minaj in a makeup brand advertisement* *Nicky fans on their way to buy every single product from the makeup brand*) -pathos(making the advertising emotional to convince audience. Example: “Cute little puppies are dying in the pet shelter! They need a family. Come buy them from us!” Causes the audience to be sympathetic for the dogs, then they go and buy some). -logos(using logic and proved evidence to convince audience. Example: “Based on statistics, our toothpastes completely whitens 19/20 of our buyers” this attracts people with yellow teeth) You’re welcome

Isn't ethos also an appeal to emotions? I don't see how it invokes anything rather than emotions, because it has nothing to do with the quality or truthfulness of the actual argument

kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5iaZpefet6cd5I Our authority figures are a bunch of grandmothers. People who KNOW how to make a great meal. The facts are that there is no meat in the dishes served, and that makes them upset. Seeing these people upset illicit laughs but also a strong response to happy childhood memories and the taste of a great dinner.

I've often found that students could compellingly argue that many arguments could be looked at from all 3 angles. For example, when we talk about climate change, it's pretty easy to imagine an emotional component to the argument (pathos), if someone writes about it in a gramatically correct way, then you could argue ethos, and logos could simply sound logical or have any kind of a mathematical argument involved. If you think about any argument deeply enough, it's easy to argue any one of the three. I've stopped giving multiple choice ethos, pathos, logos quizzes. Students get them wrong, but it's often not because they don't understand the three types of persuasion, it's because they are thinking about it too "deeply."

Good video, but a quick pronunciation note: The "a" in pathos is a long ā (a-e), not a short one.
@ronaldchevalier94583 жыл бұрын
There is a reason for the confusion. By itself, we use the long "a." As a root word, it isn't pronounced with a long a. Example: Sympathy, empathy, apathy, psychopath. Therefore, it is better to be flexible and teach students to understand that.
