Etho MindCrack SMP - Episode 145: Bed Spawn

Today we make some updates to the Death Games and try to figure out how to make a respawn system for the pvp arena that will be able to count and track player deaths.

Etho, I heavily advise against a class system for this game! It adds a layer of complexity which is not needed, you already have you work cut out for you with the buildings and paths and sightlines and timings in the capture points. You don't want to have to design a map with multiple classes in mind as it makes your job much harder. Some spots are OP with some classes, some areas are death traps for others, maybe a class is just OP in general, ect. Having all players use the same class also helps because after a few encounters, each player can fully understand the ablities of themselves, their teamates, and their opponents. There's no guess work, there's no gimmicks, there's no cheap moves or confusion about why you died. This makes the game more enjoyable from a casual and competitive perspective. Not to mention you would need to stock and manage all the different items each class would use, and for every time a player respawn you would need more. Additionally, all players drop items when they die, so players could gain access to items from other classes. Don't use classes, it works in some games, like TF2 or LoL or whatever, but for a game like this you want a standard kit for each player.

Etho, I made a similar bed design a few months ago and this is what I did - 1.) Spawned on a block then used trip wire to retract the block you stand on which makes you fall 2.) Had 8 dispensers that I filled in a way that gave you all your weapons and tools in the correct order 3.) Block under dispensers retracted to let the player fall another 2 blocks to release them Thnx for making great vids :D

Mr. Slabs you should definitely do this bed set up as a prank on Bdubs. Set up his bed where when he dies and respawns he will trip the wire causing a sticky piston to pull the block he's standing on, making him fall into a pit of lava. You will have to set it up where the block doesn't slide back into place on when he falls so he's not stuck in an infinite loop of dying though.

I watched it and I was impressed, although i wish you guys could have actually tested out the kill streak system. I'm genuinely excited about this project you guys are working on now. When the game isn't in use, you could have the sticky piston push the slab under the tripwire so people don't accidentally spawn in your game

May I suggest hooking the equipment dispensers also up to the trip wire so that the player can't accidentally pick up a second set or grab the person behind them's set?

Would be funny if he came back to it and it would be covered in 5-10 blocks of snow :D I think this should be in the game. Any snowy biome that was loaded at least once should be counting how long ago a player last visited the area and cover the area with snow accordingly :D Stone bricks should turn into mossy and cracked stone bricks and some blocks (check if no redstone or water next to it) should randomly vanish. Idk, like 1-2 blocks per week :D I think this would be a great compromise for the torches as well. Torches extinguish on their own after you haven't loaded that chunk for a month.

Hey Etho! If you have a bed per player you could get classes involved through the auto-equipper. Also, you might want to drop the players a block or two downwards, that way if you have a deathmatch and want to control maximum deaths allowed you could have a player lose respawn points, thus when he reaches zero he is out of the game and can watch it from a viewing area(have a piston door to open if he's on the pressure plate or activating the tripwire and also has enough spawn points, if he doesn't have a piston door that leads to the viewing area). This should make it more interesting because people who die quicker will be out of the game quicker rather than lose more points for their team.

Etho, it would be crazy if around the top, you had one minecart on tracks that took a goofy path looping through buildings and such as kinda like a fast transport to get around or to fight, or maybe two minecarts, each on their own set of tracks and have one for each spawn side, maybe get some cool bow shots or have a two people battling it out as they pass each other on the tracks, that would be cool

I agree. But one improvement I'd make to your suggestion! If they managed to get it, instead of them giving there killer a diamond, make it a diamond block! Things like that don't happen every day, so they deserve a reward for it, and because they did it for the death games! Like so Etho can see? :)

Hey Etho you should set up the classes with the beds so for instance "For Tank Class Sleep In This Bed!" and then you could sleep in the bed and get that class when you die and respawn

An easier solution for your bed problem: Since after they re spawn they will have to walk through the passageway to the arena, in which they get re-equipped, the death counter could be included in the pressure plate next to the dispensers. This way, you will prevent people dying at the same time and re spawning in the same bed at the same time (in tripwire is activated and you add another player, it wont register it) since they all need their equipment so even if they walk on the plate at the same time, the other one who did not get equipped will walk back into it :D

Place the bed on a high place, make the player fall 5 blocks (add a regen potion dispenser) through a tripwire landing on a pressure plate with the dispensers. player can't go back nor trip the wire more than once.

22:28 Etho, my concern with the piston is that if two people spawn nearly simultaneously, the second guy's spawn may be blocked by the piston, and he's taken out of the game. But I agree it's more likely someone will not move after they spawn, blocking the counter. It also might be feasible to have two separate spawning blocks for partial redundancy, each with counters, but that's more work.

Hey Etho! I just wanted to let you know-if you didn't already know-that you can "quick drop" items in your invontory. Open your invontory and hover your curser over the item you want to drop, press q and walla! Faster than dragging and dropping items.

I think you should use leather armour dyed cyan. Most people won't be wearing that because most of you have iron armour. The colour cyan is also sometimes considered to represent clarity and communication, which makes sense because by wearing the armour you're telling people you're playing the death games. It also seems to be EthoCorp's main colour so it fits all around.

Etho, with the death game idea for the arena I thought it would be cool if there was a limit in the number of times the pressure plate in the spawn room could be triggered before the doorway back to the arena closes up with a piston doorway for the losing team. When that happens, another piston doorway inside the losing teams spawn opens revealing a ladder back up to the arena house level so they can all watch the rest of their team try to survive from above the arena. Also a 1-life and out game would be pretty cool. Games would be much more intense that way

Etho i was suggesting to bdubs to tell you to implement horses into your game, if there is space. like killstreaks or just to have them. maybe if you get 2 kills you get one, or maybe they only two spawn on each side to act like vehicles in FPS games

For the spawning thing I think you have everything perfect, except if someone on the oposing team could throw there items into the tripwire and make it count as there deaths so you should have a hopper below the tripwire so if an item triggers it then you will have to make it so the death count is decreased by one so heres an example: Item is thrown, added death to team,item goes through hopper and deathcount is decreased by one so that items cant be thrown in. PLEASE LIKE THIS COMMENT SO ETHO CAN SEE!!!

Wouldn't it be easier if you had a spawning room with either a pressure plate or trip wire outside the door that counted every time someone passed through the door? You could have a reset button for it when they leave the room to set their spawn.

zach burke No, build a spawn room like BDubs made in the arena on the season 3 map. When you exit the door, you trip a tripwire or pressure plate, which adds to a count. To reset it before the game starts, you press a button which would empty the hoppers or whatever you're using to keep count.

zach burke No problem. I know command blocks aren't used on the server, and, personally, I'm not sure if Etho would use one if they were allowed. I know he likes to come up with ways to do stuff using redstone and his brain.

BigAl is exactly right. If each player had individual rooms, they'd only have to be 4 blocks long and 1 block wide, with no redstone visible whatsoever apart from the pressure plate one block away from the bed. Since every player would be able to sleep at once, you'd also be able to pass the night, which you had to wait for in order to set spawns in the first place. For deathmatch mode, you'd even be able to block their exit when the ticket count is reached and they'd still won't be set back to spawn.

I think each person should have their own bed and then you can track individual deaths rather than team deaths. Also if you have team beds, the piston would obstruct the bed for other players.

Since you'll be having an equipping station, I thought maybe it'd be a good idea to have a suicide pit for the players of the game. What I thought was the players would unload all their inventory before the game starts, they equip their items and such for and during the game. When the game is over, Obstruct the teams' beds, and have them fall in a pit that will have a hopper at the bottom. This will collect most of the game's equipment for you, without damaging it, and this process will allow the players to clear their inventory quickly and allow them to get their stuff or spawn back at server spawn.

If you want class selection, you can do that with different beds: have them pick a class by sleeping in a certain bed. The dispensers would then be used to define the class' properties.

DuelScreen Yes, I mean setting up 2 corners with tripwire, piston, etc. With such a setup, the player that hits "respawn" a split second earlier will spawn in random one of the two corners, the piston will push him, block the spawning space, and the other player will have just 1 possible respawn spot. It should work unless 3 players (instead of 2) press the button in a very short period of time, or the delay between the players won't be long enough for the piston to extend.

Okay, Etho. You could use slow sand to prevent players from coming back and triggering the death counter. Or you could put the spawn bed at the end of an enclosed room, and leave a one-way door between the spawn spot and the equipment dispensers.

If you do make a class selection system, you should add a bed for every class so people get the class they chose auto-equipped when they respawn. Also you should put a drop after the auto-equip so people cannot get more gear then they're supposed to, aswell as a drop between the room you get pushed into and the "spawn" (the hole the players will enter the arena through) so the other team cannot get in there. I hope you like my suggestions and if you don't use them, I'm sure thats becuase you've already come up with something better ;).

Etho, i think people will still be able to break the wire after spawn by turning back and clicking on it which might be broke. i might be wrong but at least i think it is better that piston should push the player to fall into 2 high hall so this way he won't be able to see the weir nor spawn space. loving the working you always doing :)

I have a suggestion about the deathmatch arena: Have a respawn center per player on the team, so that theres no chance they'll respawn incorrectly, and you'll get to see who your greatest liability is, or have a certain number of respawns per person!

You should probably add a mono-stable circuit to the piston pusher, for if two people decide to respawn at the same time the halfslab will send one of them back to the townhall. (I'm sure it _will_ happen sooner or later, but the shorter the piston is extended the smaller the chances)

If by a mono-stable circuit, you mean a one-tick pulse, that wouldn't work, since with a one-tick pulse, sticky pistons leave the block behind, and the slab will obstruct everyone's bed until another pulse brings it back. The quickest he could do would be a 2-tick pulse, but it seems like the system already minimizes time, since as soon as the piston is fully extended, the player is no longer triggering the tripwire and the piston immediately retracts.

chrayez I indeed didn't mean a short pulse, but a two tick pulse. The signal a tripwire emits is 5 redstone ticks long, so the piston is obstructing the bed for a total of 8 ticks. The way it's setup it could be shortened down to 5. It's not huge but still a difference of 37%.

Use 8 Snowlayers instead of Soulsand to prevent walking back to the tripwire! *It doesn't slow you down. *It looks a bit nicer if you would "Hide" it between Snow blocks.

You could make multiple bed spawn areas at the PVC arena so people will spawn at whatever bed they set there spawn at. So the spawn area won't get clogged

Maybe you could have hopper mine carts running beneath the pvp arena to pick up any drops after someone dies. I feel like it may be annoying to fit in, but would pay off in the long run, as you wouldn't need to replace quite as much gear. Plus it could keep people from taking gear that their class shouldn't have if you decide to stick with that idea. Anyway, love the videos, keep up the good work!

with the counter you could make a scoreboard like thing for the capture point game much if you could find a way to the "flags" to the counter where it slowely lowers the enemy by a number depending on the number of "flags" you have while at the same time counting deaths against them and when 1 team hits 0 a barrage of fire works goes off denoting the winner. basically eliminating need for a complicated timer or someone timing it and it having a way to having shorter games so more rounds could be played while still having a built in time limit mimicking domination/conquest in the battlefield video game series
