The storage system is amazing and it makes me want to try and make a machine to organize shulkers automatically. From a user experience the goal would be to dump randomly filled shulkers (say from a chest monster) into the input and it then drains them and uses each item in the temp hipd chest to set the filter to fill up empty shulkers from the reserve and then put the sorted shulkers into the output chest. I think it could pair really well with this shulker searcher etho made. (Or just route the shulkers to a special shulker sorting facility to place each shulker in its corresponding chest, but i suspect just using Etho's machine would be simpler) Etho should never shy away from doing redstone on camera, it both interesting and inspiring.

I rather like this system, as some shulkers you might want to stay mess, such as a redstone shulker box for example. This way can have organized(or messy) shulkers and still be able to search them for specific items without having to place&open tons of them. Sure you can just keep the themed boxes in an ender chest, but sometimes you might need multiples and ender chest space is rather limited. This could likely be expanded to handle as many shulkers as one wants. Ironically, this storage system would likely be amazing for hermits like Good TimesWithScar and his chronic shulker monsters. Just toss the shulkers back in once done with your project, and can easily find the materials for the next project.

@kevintyrrell74092 жыл бұрын
@PartialXRay One thing though, why would a system like this be useful? Why not just have something that automatically organizes the boxes. For example, all sticks are in one box, all redstone dust are in one box, etc etc. I don't see the advantage in having boxes filled with random assortments of items rather than it being uniform.
@ShaneRay252 жыл бұрын
@@kevintyrrell7409 great question! In my opinion, multiple options are "right". Something Etho said in a prior to this video is that minecraft keeps coming out with new blocks, so constantly adding multiple new shulkers to a "sorted" or collected system becomes increasingly difficult. Adding the new mangrove wood to a shulker that is already packed and efficient with all the other wood types now becomes a problem. Especially as someone who only plays/tests in survival. Your proposed method is good, if you take the time, ever time to sort and order your items/shulkers. Everyone else is making the same variations of a basic sorting system. water/hoppers or that new ROOM SIZE one (still impressive) and here comes Etho with a Redstone innovation, on a casual weekday afternoon lol. I still remember when 1.3 came out with a new locking mechanic on repeaters that no one uses anymore, and I was so obsessed with it that I kept trying to find uses for it even though the mechanic would soon be overshadowed by the 1.5 Redstone Update not too long later. Seeing Etho geek out in this episode over the technical details of his build made me feel nostalgic for the days when I'd obsessively try to find ways to utilise a new redstone mechanic. :)

Etho! This was by far one of my favorite episodes because I got to see the Pixel/Googler again. A request - Please build a defragmentation function that consolidates items into less boxes. It would reduce the number of search results you receive and make it so that you could just dump items in the system haphazardly, but then press "Defragment" and walk away, knowing that the next time you search for *whatever* it would all be in the smallest number of boxes, even allowing you to just grab the whole box and go. You could then also use boxes to deposit items a little more easily. There are several options for how to implement this based on how robust you make the algorithm, but even a simple version should help considerably and be relatively straightforward to implement into you current design.

A new chapter in Etho's storage room saga that started in the 2010 let's play world, continued into the mancave piston storage room, via the Nexus to the highs of the amplified mobile minecart storage, the ender chest management system and the various iterations on shulker storage. His story continues. In a few years I'll feel brave enough to try to recreate this.

I love the episode someing you probably thought of but you can store swords and armor in this if you add a key item to the shulker just loke a dirt named "sword" or "tools" and when you use the same named item in the filter it will return any chest with that key item in it. Can even go as far as adding extra key items like have "diamond" and "tools" in one "stone" "tools" in a second and "diamond" "swords" in a third so if you search diamond it pulls all the diamond chest both the diamond tools and sword chest or can search tools and grab the diamond tools and the stone tools out. There so so much you can do with this I love it

@fenn72 жыл бұрын
Yes, this was definitely an interesting episode, and your explanations made sense! (Though I'd have zero chance of replicating your result haha)
@jasonreed75222 жыл бұрын
Its definitely one of those builds you get the high level theory behind (add a filter item, check each box if it has that item, if yes put in pipe 1, if no put in pipe 2), and yet to attempt to replicate it, especially with how compact and tightly timed it is feels impossible. (Its one of the few builds a block by block is possibly a better tutorial than a functional block by functional block) Ps: functional block is a term i learned in microelectronics to describe a group of circuit components that perform a specific task so you can just draw a box arround them and simplify the total circuit because you know they are just a clock or something. Basically don't look at redstone as the individual components but as groups of components that combined are just an item filter. (You design at the functional block level anyway and then figure out what goes inside)

Etho, I absolutely love the shulker search engine, and I've loved the idea since you first made the Pixel! I have a few ideas that I think could improve its function and fix some significant issues. TL:DR - Shulker search engine puts recent searches at the end and it makes common searches slow, instead, put recent searches at the front, make machine go fast. :D Go get a snack for this one! One issue I cant help but find annoying is that when you search for something and then dump the positives back into storage at the end, they get added to the back of the storage system. This means that if you search for the same item again you need to go through EVERY negative result before finding all of the positives at once, and because the negative shulker order remains the same after searching, the most searched items will always remain at the end of the search queue as each search gets appended to the bottom of the stack. So not only is the most recent search the slowest to re-search, but the system remembers all past searches in the shulker order meaning that a common search will always take longer than an uncommon search, which is exactly the opposite of what a good search engine does. I would propose keeping an empty buffer chest similar to the positive search buffer you have under the ender chest, but in front of the main storage stack, so when the Positive search 'RAM' is dumped to permanent storage it gets added to the front of the search priority rather than the back. Then, when you read from permanent storage, have the system first pull from the 'last search buffer', and then pull from the front of the main storage stack. That way, even if the next search is not the same search, those shulkers will remain at the front of the permanent storage stack after they move through the search engine and the new search can populate the 'last search buffer' once you dump the search results. This would result in common searches remaining at the front of the search queue, resulting in faster search times. I would recommend not simply placing the 'last search buffer' in series in front of the main storage as then if you stop a search halfway through the buffer will be filled with whatever was about to be searched, rather I would place it in parallel to the main storage, with a comparator to read if the buffer still has items in it, locking the main storage from being searched until the buffer has been emptied. One other issue that can still occur is that when you stop a search, the search order will change to begin exactly where you left off, rather than at the beginning of the queue again, resulting in common searches that were not actively being searched for being once again somewhere in the middle of the search queue. If there are many searches between each search cancel then this will only impact the search time the first time a common item is searched for since the cancellation, and then the problem will fix itself, however if you cancel the search every time you get one shulker with the item you need then the order will always be messed up in some way. The only way I can think of fixing this in a reasonable way is by arranging your entire main storage in parallel rather than series, where one box is read at a time, starting from the first chest each search (As opposed to reading from the same chest all the time and having the next chest filter its shulkers through that chest, where if a search is stopped the front chest has whatever was next to be searched). This means that if you write the negative shulkers back to main storage one chest at a time, even if you cancel, if you start back at the beginning the shulkers are still in order with an accuracy of about one chest (only useful with multiple chests of storage, but this only really becomes that big of an issue with multiple chests of shulkers) (Inaccuracy is due to the chest that was only partially read through, rather than the that was partially read through). The main issue with this is in order to put the 'last search buffer' shulkers back into the main storage stack, the first chest must be emptied into the second and so on. So basically every search you would need to shift the shulkers down one chest down the line in order to place the last search in front. You could do this in a smarter way by having your entire parallel storage system be in a loop, where the 'last search buffer' is just the next chest in the loop, and then you read if a chest has items with a comparator and if chest N has items it locks the hopper of chest N+1 so chest 1 is emptied first, then when you dump positives back you use chest N-1 as the 'last search buffer', then you start writing your shulkers back into main storage starting with Chest N, and your next search starts at Chest N-1 as it having items in it is locking chest N, therefore starting the search one chest earlier. By having the chests in a loop, you ensure there is always a chest N-1 to populate with the last search's positive results, and as the negatives are being filled back in starting at chest N, free space will open up in the loop ahead. This method can also solve the problem of cancelling again before all main storage shulkers have been read in one of two ways, first you could simply 'defragment' the storage device every so often by letting a search run to completion, thus collecting any shulkers left behind in the loop, or if you use the comparator locking the chest directly behind it if it has items to test if there is a free chest in front of a chest of un-read shuklers the comparator would unlock their chest and you could set up a system which routes unlocked boxes into the next box in the event they are unlocked, and also a search is not actively being conducted, I don't know how exactly that could be implemented, but this is just the automatic solution which can just be solved manually. Although my second suggestion is a bit of a pipe dream for the ultimate shulker search engine, I don't think my first suggestion is too far fetched. You may need to rearrange some parts of your search engine access point, but adding a separate chest which the positive results are sent to rather than the main stack, and then reading from that chest first wouldn't be too daunting of a task for how much better of a search engine it would make this system. Also, as long as you let the majority of your searches reach completion, the second issue is much less important. If you implemented this into any of your shulker search engines, I think that would be super cool. Hopefully you enjoyed my comment and found it interesting! Thanks for reading, Have a wonderful day, Take care, Bye Bye!
