My wife and I flew Sydney to Abu Dhabi Etihad 1st Class in March. Was a fantastic experience, thanks for recommending it Sam. We switched from Emirates to Etihad on the strength of your reviews and were not disappointed, like being in a hotel with a double bed. Crew were fantastic. Flying on a private jet is on a WHOLE different level of rich. There's no doubt that these people that can fly first in these cabins have change, but it's no where near private jet money. I've always been curious about the price different so I actually inquired about the prices. To fly from Los Angeles to New York in one of these cabins is about $5,000 dollars (give or take depending on the time of day and the day of the week). In comparison, to fly just on a "medium" sized private jet with NO flight attendant service would be $50,000 dollars. (this is an actual price quote from a reputable private jet rental company). $5k for a cross country flight is a ton of cash and something i'll never be able to do in this lifetime, but $50k is something only a very small percentage of people in this world are able to do. And even in these cases, this super rich people will "split" the jet with another paying customer to help reduce costs. So for just one person to be able to rent a private jet for just them, well, that's quite a life to have. I hope they don't take it for granted.

Hi John Smith, I worked for years as an aircraft mechanic in several companies that chartered aircraft of different sizes. The cost is on a per hour basis, ranging from 1500-10000 per hour and more. A medium sized aircraft that could fly across the continent would be about 5-6000 per hour. If 6 or so friends got together they could charter an aircraft and split the costs. It's cheaper than a first class ticket on a commercial jet with far less of the hassles and greater in flight flexibility with food, drinks, etc.
