In our dojo, we have to bow to your training partner, before and after practice. And bow to sensei when the training is over.

Great video, you do have to explain this to beginners as form teaching judo for the last 15 years "common" sense is not so common.

I have a question regarding judo etiquette: At your dojo, when going into seiza at the beginning and at the end of each training session, who kneels first, and who does it last (sensei, senpai, kohai or the other way around)? Why? Because I wonder if there is a universal, correct way of doing it. Thanks!

Another problem I have is people just taking of their gi in the middle of training. Our dojo get's ridiculously hot because we can only tilt the windows open and the walls are designed to keep the heat in (before we wore layers under our gi in winter because it was so cold, I'd rather sweat in summer than freeze in winter). So the kids often try to take of their top, also because they find the top restricting and they don't like having to keep adjusting their gi. For everything judo related I tell them to keep all their clothes on but if we play a game at the end or do conditioning and strength exercises they can take them off after I have given them permission. But the adults should always wear their gi. First of all we train later so it's much cooler and second they are adults, so suck it up. A couple of weeks ago us grown ups were doing some rope skipping to warm up and one of the women took of the top of her gi. She did not understand why I was annoyed and wanted her to put it back on. I was the highest ranking on the mat so there should have been no argument after this point but sadly there was.

Sometimes there only two of us in one judo class, and when we line up in front of the kamiza to open the class, what should I say? Is it senseini-rei ?

at my Jitsu club, you weren't allowed on the mat until the highest grade (who was already on the mat) bowed you on. If your belt came undone you had to take a knee to do it back up. If when you were training you accidentally hurt your opponent, you had to kneel down and face away from them until they were recovered. At my Judo club, you can only get a drink when Sensei allowed it.

90% of the advise here was just commonsense. Who needs to be told to wash your hands after using the bathroom?!
@BeyondGrappling8 жыл бұрын
+Paul Bright of course but this is aimed at people who know nothing about etiquette in the dojo

You might be surprised the number of people don't wash their hands.
