For anyone watching in 2024. On my 2022 ranger I had to pull with a lot of force to get the side panels off. So much so that I was worried I would break something. The center panel took some muscle as well one side at a time. They go back in really easy though.

You're trying to pry a plastic panel off, but you're afraid to apply too much force and risk damaging anything. I just did this installation on a 2021 Ranger and the new revision 3 RedArc. First off, excellent video, I wouldn't have even known where to start without it. Getting the side panels off are a pain, but with patience, they will come off. Getting the lighter socket off is more of a pain, but once again, take your time. The cable from the switch to the controller is no longer a Ethernet type cable, but a custom cable. This doesn't make any difference, but it's a change. The bezel that is for a GM or Isuzu, does not come in the package, and must be ordered separately. $8.60 and free shipping from RedArc. The wires from the Ford side are short and a hassle and the white and violet ones are very small and need a red butt connector because the blue ones don't crimp down tight on the wire. Once again, this video is great and will get you where you need to be. Thank you.

So if the trailer starts to sway and you need to apply some trailer brake without braking the truck how do you do it? This solution is ridiculous in my opinion. Even the new low end ford maverick includes a integrated brake controller with their tow package. I suspect this is because ford didn't want to change much from the European version and the ranger we got was basically leftovers from an already aging truck.

I heard this particular set up is useless when the front accident assist is energized to stop the truck, the trailer will not engage it breaks??

Most brake controllers will have inertia sensors in them that will trigger the brake controller to activate the trailer brakes. The brake controller will still need to be signaled by the brake pedal on the vehicle. A good looking installation. Much better than having to drill holes into the dash in order to attach a bracket, which looks pretty awful in my opinion. I own an F150 with the factory brake controller, but if I bought a Ford Ranger I would definitely consider this unit. I would prefer to install it on the console so that I retained the use of the 12 volt outlet. Thank you for the video.

Very thorough video, thanks for posting. I've heard that the headliner has to be removed in order to tie into the third brakelight with the Redarc but you didn't do it here, can you explain please. Is their any difference between the official Ford Redarc controller and just buying direct from you or Redarc? Thanks

2020 Ranger is identical. I'd like to correct some information here as well. The Ford "OEM" TBC is of course the same Redarc unit. But, due to an engineering oversight, the Ford version requires an additional module. The "Stock" Redarc unit is not able to apply trailer brakes during automatic emergency braking conditions, because the wire under the dash does not provide a braking signal during that. The trailer brakes only will apply when the pedal is pressed. The Ford OEM one includes a LUMENS LED ECU module, which pulls a signal from the third brake light, as the light turns on during all braking conditions. If you don't go with the Ford OEM version, keep this in mind. The Redarc is a great unit, I just wish Ford didn't drop the ball on their execution. I'm not saying this to start arguments, I just want you all to be informed. If you have any further questions I'm happy to answer here or in my DMs. I don't work for Ford, I'm just someone who researched extensively.

@@billyspears396 I was thinking about that. The controller still works when pressing the pedal but not the automatic braking. So when towing turn off the automatic braking. It is a good safety feature but we did get by without it for decades. Of course lawyers might jump on it if there was an accident. I don’t tow anything requiring a controller with my Ranger so it is not a concern in my case. I would probably have the dealer install it if I did. Depends on one’s risk tolerance. Edit: ridiculous that Ford did not just put the thing in as part of the towing package. What is the point of the hitch and plugs on the bumper if it is an incomplete system?

i installed mine on a 2019 ranger xlt and its not working I push the radio buttion once and it does go blue then it just turns off I hook my trailer and no lights ever stay on the radio dial , my friend tested the trailer with his truck and brake controller trailers working , I have no idea whats wrong I matched the four cables just like the video and it has to be getting power or the blue LED light would never come on ?? i'm frustated

@@etrailer nope it's just blue only when i push the buttion in and nothing eles works I'm frustated becouse it's only four wires I dont see how i got it wrong but 100 % doesnt work on my 2019 Ranger , doe'st matter what I do the brakes are not coming on when i test the camper with my friends 150 it works fine , I'm at a lost i guess I just drilled a hole in my pannel and bought this for no reason

I appreciate the video, although I wish the video showed a different place to mount the brake controller knob. In my opinion the current spot in which you mounted the knob is completely stupid, it ruined a factory function the truck came with. If that's the best place to put that knob I will for sure be buying a different controller.
