Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Reese line of Strait-Line weight distribution systems with sway control. This is what our kit's gonna look like installed. As you can see, we've got our head here fully active weight distribution system, but also active sway control, so if you're in the first group of customers, you don't have a weight distribution system at all right now. You've got a lot of squat on the back of your truck and the front of your trailer. The rear suspension's doing a lot of extra work, and the front axle on your trailer's gonna be doing a lot of extra work. With these bars being fixed mounted to our head, as we draw those up it's just like lifting up the back of a wheelbarrow.
As you lift up the back of a wheelbarrow, that weight transfers forward. That also is reflected in our trailer. The weight's gonna be transferred back, so we're gonna evenly distribute the amount of work over the two axles on our truck and the two axles on our trailer. That's gonna make components last a lot longer. If you already have a weight distribution setup or if you don't, this applies to both categories. We have now added an active sway control system rather than the passive system that just bolts on here and bolts on here.
That does nothing if sway hadn't started occurring. That only works after sway starts, and it's just there to dampen the effect. With an active system like this since our trunnion bars are sitting on our cams, this is working at all times to prevent sway from ever starting. There could be big crosswinds, 18 wheelers passing us, any number of things can cause a trailer to begin swaying, but this from the instant it starts is gonna be fighting to return it to center. This can also be an extremely helpful situation, that active sway control, in evasive maneuvers.
Let's say you have to jump over a lane really quickly. When you turn your truck, the weight of the trailer wants to continue forward with the standard weight distribution setup. With an active sway control system rather than a standard weight distribution with the friction style, it actually pulls the front end of that trailer toward your truck. It makes it easier for the trailer to follow your truck rather than go in its own direction, which is really important especially if you have to do those evasive maneuver type situations. This Strait-Line kit from Reese isn't just available for your really big trailers or the really small trailers. They have a wide variety of tongue weight and trailer weight applications, and it's important that you know what you need.
It's important that you know what kind of tongue weight your trailer has and what the gross trailer weight rating is because matching your weight distribution system to that is gonna give you the optimal ride quality. If your trunnion bars are too stiff, then the ride quality in your truck's gonna suck. It's still gonna distribute the weight, it's gonna be nice there, but the ride quality is gonna be drastically diminished. If your trunnion bars are too light, if they're not gonna work for your application there, well you're not gonna get the weight distributing effect that we need. You'll probably still have sag in the rear of the truck. Front of the trailer's probably still gonna be down, so check it out, know the numbers, and purchase the system that

This guy is GREAT at instructional videos! He makes it so much easier to understand than the manual that comes with this setup. I had mine installed at the RV dealer and although he did a good job, I think it might need some adjustments. I'm using this video to step through the process. Many thanks!

Dudes, thank you for such a comprehensive video. I just purchased a 2017 Airstream Tommy 27FB which came with this Reese setup. Unfortunately the previous owner had a different TV, so my trunion bars didn’t match up and I had to adjust the cam sway device. The fact that you not only showed the complete install, but how to mitigate issues like this makes this video such a huge help. Thank you again.

In 45 years of RVing with all sizes of trailers this type of hitch is the best I have found. Help prevent sway by never putting anything heavy on the rear bumper of the trailer.

Just wondering about the tools required for this setup. Do the instructions have a comprehensive list of tools that you'll need? BTW: Excellent instructional video! We're setting up this same hitch for our 36-ft. Rockwood Signature Ultra-lite (2019) in a couple weeks, and we're definitely using this video as our preferred guide. Thank you! (FYI: Our current dealer-provided Husky WDH system + friction brake is waaaaayy too lightweight to keep our trailer from swaying and giving us both heart attacks whilst barreling down the highways and byways.)

When you set the top bolt on the head bracket, with the serrated tooth washers, it's critical that you count the remaining teeth on the base so that you have an even amount on both sides. Otherwise, there may be some misalignment on the base.

If you check out about the 15:10 mark you can see the installation of the U-Bolt where he leaves some of the threads showing and the open end of the U-Bolt facing outwards.

Very thorough instructions, BUTT This is for a dual cam system. do not attach chain to the end of the spring bar. the cam sits in this cradle. The instructions for attaching chain to the spring bar are for a straight line weight distribution system.

If you watch at the 13:13 mark he explains not to tighten the lock nuts as this is only used to help gauge where to set up the height of the bars. Skip to about the 15:10 mark and you can see how to install the U-Bolts for the dual cam system like you mentioned.

Great video! Can you please tell up just how many inches that measurement from "the center of the X to the center of our bolt" (16.47) should be? Thanks.

great review thank you. In your opinion. Is this a better hitch for sway control than a friction type (theres so many) but say like up against the Reese Steadi Flex? we re looking for a WD hitch that addresses sway the best ...WITHOUT....having to resort the a Hensley or Pro Pride. thanks

The Reese Straight-Line Weight Distribution System has proven to be the best weight distribution system that also controls sway from our experience. www.etrailer.com/Weight-Distribution-Hitch/Reese/RP66082.html

@@etrailer Ok… super! It looks good. At the moment I have one Reese anti-sway bar. I’ve ordered another and feel quite confident that the two will address my sway. But if not… I think I’ll try the Straight line Thank you

Did you install self tapping screws on the front of the snap up bracket? The manufacturer instructions call for this but it’s not clear and I don’t think you did this in the video. Thanks
@etrailer

The front brackets are held on by rivet nuts for installation on a trailer with a tubular frame. If you are installing this on a trailer without a tube frame. You will then use self tapping screw or nut and bolt to hold the brackets on. www.etrailer.com/Weight-Distribution-Hitch/Reese/RP66086.html

ya ...youre right, 9 1/2 inchs to be exact. but I guess if you drag em once in awhile it shouldnt really damage them.. Scrapes maybe. In reverse maybe bad though. May dig in. But I guess for final maneuvers one could always take them off. Id sure like to talk to a real customer that has used these.Thats one one the questions Id have for him as well.

You have to do all this with the trailer loaded and the car loaded or empty be OK

It is best to set up your weight distribution as if you are getting ready to pull out for a trip. That means everything loaded in the camper and car. This will will put your vehicle in the best ride quality that you can get. www.etrailer.com/Weight-Distribution-Hitch/Reese/RP66082.html

Poor installation. Lift bars should be almost parallel with the A frame. Usually 5 links are dropped. Tilt the ball forward a little.
