Was fortunate enough to attend one of Etta's last concerts in San Diego on Sept 28, 2008. It was an outdoor waterfront venue and her delivery echoed across the bay. She was, as always, Fantastic ! Etta says that She sings for herself .. for her own Therapy. Well, for sure her voice, her delivery really rings home. She knows all about pain, suffering and survival and if She's not in Heaven, I'd rather not go there

I was lucky enough to see her in person & it was after her weight loss surgery. She looked fabulous & although she was probably 1/3 her usual weight her voice was just as big & on the money as it ever was. She sang from her heart, a heart that experienced far too much pain. Minnesota Fats never had the balls to admit he was her father let alone even acknowledge her.

I commented somewhere else that Mrs. Etta probably had different political views or disagreements with Obama, and that is why she wasn’t chosen. But, by her comments, you could tell it wasn’t a situation where she turned them down. I bet she would’ve done it, whether she agreed with him or not. I don’t think a younger artist should do that while the legend is still alive without them sanctioning it first. RIP Etta James.
