Saw her many time in a small Oakland nightclub - Mr. Broadways- sat in a small table in the front, she would drop to her knees and sing to us. I was a 17 year old white girl in an all black nightclub 1968..she was so special..

This music is before my time the art back then had a raw yet honest method to what they did. She seems encertic to me she makes these faces I don't know if it's drugs or the effects of it

When you hear the music of female vocalists such as Aretha Franklin, Lydia Pence, Janis Joplin, they ALL have ONE thing in common, they were influenced by the late Etta James!!...Of the four, ONLY is STill Standing.... Lydia Pence....She was the lead vocalist of "Cold Blood" which came out of the Bay area of California along with Sly Stone and his group and many more etc...

IDK why the person who wrote a comment 2 days ago thought and called THIS version a beautiful, raspy, and ‘soft’ one? In my close to 70 year old opinion it’s not nearly close, except for the fact Etta’s voice IS raspy. I’m NOT trying to sound or be critical of her and DO think she’s one of those artists who can be appreciated by people who listen to music from ALL years and genres - not just ‘soul’/‘blues’ or particular time period. * However I honestly feel that NINA Simone is a step or two above Etta!
@tedstunes224 ай бұрын
Cannot compare Etta to Nina to different types of singers!Can you compare B B King to Johnny Hartman?Etta was raw Blues and R&B!Nina was jazz and all the phrasing like Betty Carter and Sarah and Amy Winehouse. Etta and Nina represent their genres with aplomb.
@tedstunes224 ай бұрын
At a Hole in the wall in Chicago they playin Etta sing Luv and lust!Nina is refined but down and dirty Etta gonna be played on the juke box and the band stand.
@elainemeyer50624 ай бұрын
@@tedstunes22 I wasn’t making a comparison to them. My comment was MY personal opinion and interpretation of THIS song, and the person who said something that didn’t apply imo. If you misunderstood what I said, read it again carefully!

That's your opinion Etta sang blues!Nina was noted for Jazz genre, not trying to convince u!Step above how do you qualify that statement.
@tedstunes224 ай бұрын
I've listened to both all my life like what u like. Blues and Jazz are organic!This is not a esoteric debate like what u like and qualify it using ur contructs.Working class folks on the West and South side grooving and grinding to Etta.
