This review is spot on. Everyone has different taste as to how an IEM should be. Don't expect it to perfect right out of the box. For me, I use either the "scratchy foam" or the Comply ear tips specifically made for the ER series. They have that "cone" shape. What I do to get maximum sonic experience and comfort is that I squish the foams to a point where it won't get any narrower. Then I gently insert them just before I feel resistance. Then I hold still until the foam expands and seals shut my ear canal. It almost has the same level of isolation once it's sealed as a 3M neon colored ear plugs. This set up allows me to completely zone out when I need to focus on whatever I am doing. It's my favorite IEM. I just can't find ones that has similar characteristics that's are even double or more the price of the Ety's. A truly a keeper IEMs.

Thanks for the review. I've owned the ER2XR since August of 2019 and they are (for me) the best IEM Ive owned, and the base is at the level that I prefer without having to adjust the EQ. The mids are just smooth, very celan. And the noise isolation is impressive - I'm from Queens, NYC, and I ride the bus and subway on a regular basis, and the ER2XR does an amazing job in the noise isolation dept. I highly recommend them, a no brainer.

They are truly great, gotta say. Perfectly tasteful for monitoring drums and just using it for listening, and the triple flanges really are great in terms of comfort. The only thing that I had issues with was the stock shirt clip that got worn out pretty quickly, but for that I just have separate clips. That and the ER-series triple flange tips are hard to get in Europe, so that needs fixing - but the products sure are great.

Nice review. Those 3 flange deep insertion tips are not for everyone. Hard to get used to. When I got a chance to test the XR3's at Can Jam they offered a pair of 2 flange to try, much more comfortable and still great isolation. Some people have even cut down their tips to make them a 2 flange for better comfort. The 3XR & 4XR have also come down in price a lot.

I’ve gotten the Heart Mirrors, T3+, Lea, Timeless, Zero, and Dioko, and when I came back to the ER2’s, I understood. The ER2’s are water. They are the pallet cleanser of the audio world. Dear Dave, you know, sometimes when you do your description of an iem I think I am hearing my thoughts - very precise review, according to me; and I like the ER2XR very very much. Just do not like the comparison with SSR since according to me they fall behind, but please, no statement, just my view. I think that if you continue to like so much the ER2XR you should also try the ER3SE which are more neutral (less bass) but not dull also. I love the ER2XR so much that I bought also the SE and also love it - it is less bass (like Tin 2 may be) but in exchange the mids get a bit more resolute and highs get even more clarity. So now I struggle which one I like more and have a very good set of two choices. What I want to add is that Etymotic ER series has also original tuning kit with 4 additional tuning filters - got them from Etymotic last week and still did not have time to play, but I read that playing with the 5 filters (1 in and 4 different) with the ER2SE can give very interesting sound signatures. Again.! love your review!

@@TheHonestAudiophile Just couple of days, but already a game changer! The foam-tip induced perfect seal and importantly, the lovely lush pure mids has allowed me to work from a noisy cafe. So glad, I took the plunge. The comfort is not at all a problem. Jsut that silicone isn't providing as tight a noise isolation as the foam. Perhaps, i need to try out all the sizes. Were you able to get almost the same amount of isolation as the foam with the silicone as well? With the longevity of the foam being a concern, I would like to use the silicone, but unable to get the same noise-less effect. Will wear out this foam until it lasts and then think of a solution.

Etymotic make a great product! Personally I prefer their studio response curve but it's great they offer customers a choice between the accurate and neutral SR tuning or the bass boosted more musical XR tuning. I use the ER4SR probably more than any other IEM or headphone as if you want an accurate highly resolving IEM it remains the benchmark. And although Etymotic products are not cheap they're not silly by serious audio standards and offer excellent value for money.

Etymotic ER 2/3/4 series are all great. My main IEM currently is 64Audio U12T but my backup is always ER4SR. And the best part is Etymotic ER series are actually well priced in the market (especially after accounting for performance). It's the best bang for your buck as long as you are fine with ear drilling experience. ER2SE in US goes for like $49 in Adorama if you find the link through reddit. Absolute bonkers that this kind of sound quality is at $50 range. ER2SE is basically ER4SR with grainier resolution and weaker treble. Other than that, honestly, the two are identical for casual day to day listening [since you won't be side comparing] (coming from someone who tried ER2SE, ER3SE, ER4SR, ER4XR) . And Etymotics have extremely good warranty service. If you ever have problems with your IEM and send it, Etymotics will just send you a complete new pair. Very responsive too. Great company.

Awesome review, these were on sale so I gave them a go and I echo a bit of your surprise in terms of the overall capabilities and pleasantness of these earphones. I had a few Goldilocks issues with the silicone, I think the triple flange work better than the double but in both I could hear some siblance in some of my tracks. My guess is it's a tip/ear fit issue as the large triple flanges eliminated. However I switched to the foam and found it was much more preferable. I actually swapped on some hybrid silicone-foam tips by Westone I mistakenly bought awhile without reading the nozzle diameter. I stashed them away "just in case" and they fit the Etymotic perfectly. Even more sound insulation, adds a bit of bounce to the low-end without muddying anything, and clears some of that siblance I noted. Terrific IEM, my current fav, appreciate the video Sir!

Soundstage is commonly criticized when reviewers talk about Etymotic IEMs, just imagine if these were wide! You can't fault these IEMs for having limited soundstage due to the modest price. I have $300 credit on my Amazon account, these will be considered whenever I spend that credit, probably on more IEMs. BTW, that carrying pouch looks suspiciously similar to the one that comes with the Klipsch X11, an IEM I bought years ago and was very disappointed with. Thanks man! I am looking for something that isolates very well passively say on a plane. But the Meze 99 classics are as close I can come to say my perfered sound signature. Something is saying me that the Etymotic might not be for me then. I am sensivitive to treble and want some kind of warm signature. Got any ideas what to look for? Actually Meze claims there IEM 12 classics isolate up to 26 DB. But a lot of reviews seem to say it's under average in that regard.
@TheHonestAudiophile2 жыл бұрын
I found the 12 Classic to underperform in a lot of ways, including isolation and comfort. If your looking for bassy, warm in an IEM with good isolation, check out something with an universal shell and a longer nozzle. Drop Universal Plus are excellent in that regard but they've been discontinued. The TRI Meteor is a solid performer for that sound signature. The Etymotic ER2XR but it does have a touch of upper mids and lower treble emphasis is the best at isolation.
