Santa: "Ho ho ho, so what do you want for Christmas?" Kid: "I want Beats headphones." Santa: "Beats? If you want a highly exaggerated low end, an insult to the Harman target response curve, and no clarity in the higher frequencies, then go ahead, get some Beats." Kid: "Who is Harman?" Santa: "It's complicated. Listen, if you want to hear some great headphones, either a modified HD800 or the new HD800s would do it. Now, if planar magnetic is your thing, try the Audeze LCD-2." Kid: "Mommy, this Santa is weird."

How can a kid who believes in Santa can afford the HD 800 and Audeze headphones?
@johnyang7997 жыл бұрын
amse9297 hd800 is shit. Maybe worse than beats when listen music. lcd are awesome. beyerdynamic dt880 is great. Ether flow and he1000v2 are awesome. Stay away hd800 it is a bigger insult of hifi.

What? HD800 worse than Beats? DT880 is great? DT880 is far from neutral. You need to get a new pair of ears.

I really miss Tyll, and I very much miss my old ER-4Ps as well. So coming across this video has been a welcome double shot of nostalgia and useful information (as was always the case). I hope you're having a great time on the road with your ukulele, Tyll!

ER-4's have been my in ear road warriors for many years. Great for use on airplanes without having to deal with noise cancelling. I used them with the original Headroom amp, which I still have.

noooooo the beard was so beautiful!! I thought resistors made the sound more warm not brighter, filtering the higher frequencies.

Hi kyle, i'm Mayank (from India), love your videos and your voice, been a long time sub of you channel(It's like 40 Million subscribers short :) Love if you could give a test to Sennheiser's CX275 s and KZ ATE ,had a quest from long time to find good(fine) sounding earphones @ very low costs. and i think i've found these two.I know you don't like cheap stuff but, i'd just love to hear from you on these, it'll be just a few bucks. BTW have you tried the new Orpheus (HE 1)? Thanks love - please continue making videos. They're of great help and your website as well. I love the wall of fame (You are just the Boss). Have a good One.....:)

I think the sr sounds way better than xr. And none of them is better than er4b. I love er4b so much.
@r0r0r0j7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, ER4B still my favorite. Are you using red filters? I think w/ stock filters the treble peaks are a bit too much for my taste.
@johnyang7997 жыл бұрын
No1Knows IF you have really good amp then green is fine. I have used red even orange for extended period of time i can say er4b is the best!!!

The irony is I’m listening to this through my original ER4S….yes the red and blue. I recently left my set of customs and an Audioquest Dragonfly on a flight. Sooo I dug out my Etymotics and decided to buy the Helm DB12 AAAMP to power. WOW! The DB12 wipes the floor with the Dragonfly. I’ve never my ER4S sound so dynamic!

Hi, thanks for your review, anyway I am a mixing engineer, and have the best speakers but I want a headphone/earbud reference and to be honest seems all headphones are so hyped in the highend and lowend and bad detail in the mid-range ...very unbalanced freq wise ,,,so which model of the Etymotic do you consider the flatest in freq response
@EssenceofPureFlavor4 жыл бұрын
That would definitely be the ER4SR.
@vote4ulvio7 жыл бұрын
Do you think these block out more sound than active noise cancelling headphones or active noise cancelling iems? For long flights?
@anupambphoto4 жыл бұрын
Audiognome haven't tried for a flight. But it's fairly close to anc. I have the Sony headphones xm3 . I didn't a/b test them 😂
@EssenceofPureFlavor4 жыл бұрын
They isolate better than anc in most cases. Most anc headphones do about 20 dB of isolation. ER4s can give 40 dB isolation.

Hey I just lost my AKG K3003i's. I can't afford it anymore, and I still want to buy something sounds really good. Do you think Etymotic ER4XR would be a good replacement? Or what do you think I could buy?
@AshenTechDotCom3 жыл бұрын
i know this is an old post, Ty dosnt do youtube anymore, anyway, i have the ER3XR and love them, great sound, genuinely love them, if you have used ety's before, dont be afraid to buy a set, the 3 and 4 are near identical and the cables are swappable, you can get the er4 balanced cable and use it on any set of modern ety mid-high end sets ;)

Very similar performance but warmer\darker ever so slightly. They actually beat full size dynamics of up to $300 in terms of technicalities.
@johnyang7997 жыл бұрын
Hi tyll you should try comply ts100 smal size with it.
@PradyumnVij7 жыл бұрын
Prefer the silicon over comply for Etymotics, the comply adds undue warmth.

you may love the er3xr. it has at least the same bass as the er4xr but with a slightly lower treble tilt past 2khz. it is very pleasing... don't let the lower price fool you...
@NM-jn6cp6 жыл бұрын
Sean DEntremont I received mine and I'm using them right now (ER3XR) how exactly do you think they compare? :)
@dentReviews6 жыл бұрын
They compare very, very well. You have yourself an excellent earphone there. It is the most bassy of the models, but that is a very personal preference as to whether you would think the others are better or worse. The overall "quality" is very similar between them and the price is excellent! I'm making a review as we speak on my channel soon.

I'm struggling to decide which one I want to get. Maybe the best way I can describe it is that I want a bass response similar to my HD600. To me, it sounds very natural and it's just how I like it. In that case, would I want the XR?
@totinospizzarolls47377 жыл бұрын
The XR is pretty close to the HD 600 in bass, it has better sub-bass extension too.

@AR-uy8yr7 жыл бұрын

@PradyumnVij7 жыл бұрын
They're very comfortable after a day or two of getting use to them, after that all other IEMs sound wrong due to the sound that gets in. You can also get rubber ends which are shallow insertion but this kind of widens the image with some strange affects. Foam ends are ok but give more warmth. I prefer the triple flange silicon tips with the DEEP insertion. I've been using the Etymotic ER4PT for over 4 - 5 years now.
@totinospizzarolls47377 жыл бұрын
Pradyumn Vij How does the isolation of the triple flange compare to the foam tips? I am having trouble getting a deep fit with the triple flanges. Also, do you get that occlusion effect when using triple flanges?
@PradyumnVij7 жыл бұрын
josh Subet the noise isolation is at its peak with silicone tips, as foam can still let some sound through depending on how much it decomposes, however in my ear the Etymotic foam tips had very good isolation, however with a slight change to sound character.
@NighteeeeeY7 жыл бұрын
So theyre not "better" than the SE535? I am just going to buy new ones and I was considering the Shures as I saw them in your HoF. But I noticed you never did a video review for them. Would you still gonna do one? :) kinda as a re-review a few years later. Would be interesting to know your opinion on those today, and compared to a lot of others your probably heard in the last couple a years. Would appreciate it! Cheers :)
@johnyang7997 жыл бұрын
NighteeeY They are ten times better. They are even better than 846.

@HiFiInsider7 жыл бұрын
these are not ideal for hi-res audio because their fq response is limited to 16kHz. I liked the sound of XR more as well.
@johnyang7997 жыл бұрын
Hi-Fi Insider Sadly most earphones out there can't produce 13k right. It is useless to support 30 50k when they have shit response above 10k. Seriously.
@johnyang7997 жыл бұрын
Hi-Fi Insider And according to other headphones earphones standard. old er4 support 19k at least and new er4 support more than 20k.
@johnyang7997 жыл бұрын
Hi-Fi Insider Etymotic standard is super strict. Non of other earphones have the same quality in terms of frequency response.
@OriginalMindTrick7 жыл бұрын
My hearing went up to 17 kHz last time I checked. I'm not afraid if I'm missing something that I can't hear in the first place.
@johnyang7997 жыл бұрын
OriginalMindTrick Er4 has the best frequency response between 20hz and 16khz of all earphones and one of the best in the whole earphones headphones world. Have you ever test er4s/b sr by yourself for the frequency test? I bet you can hear 17k without zero problem. I can hear 21khz out of it. Hd800 wise I know it sounds ok on vocal and classic music. It had one of the best low to mid accuracy(yeah this is true). But the 6k peak is unbearable when listen to metal, electronic even some pop music. The problem is definitely there. You can't just ignore it by listen to some genres. Once i hear it i can't not hear it .you know?
